Updated review - not so good

Updated review - not so good
Third and final update: below are my first two reviews on this product from early in the process. As you can see, I liked it a lot at first. It does work fairly well if you use a lot of it. But there are major shortcomings. Shortcoming no. 1 is that part of how this stuff works is to flap in the wind and make noise. That noise pretty much makes spending time on your dock impossible, and guests will think you are a crazy person for having all this noisy stuff flapping everywhere. So all I did was trade bird poop for loud streamers as the reason for why I could not enjoy my dock.Shortcoming no. 2, which is the main reason I cannot recommend this, is that it does not last more than a month or two. The material is just a very thin plastic. After a month or so in the sun and wind, it gets brittle and breaks. The pieces then fall in the water. This is terrible. It looks bad and has to be bad for the environment. Plus, given how many of these you need to install for them to be effective, its not doable to have to redo this every couple months. I asked the seller if they have any tape that is thicker/more durable but they do not. He sent me some of the mirrors you can hang, but those are mediocre at best at keeping the birds at way. I am now trying out this bird wire - https://www.nixalite.com/products/fliteline-post-and-wire-bird-deterrent and hoping for better results.***************************************************************************This tape has been a lifesaver for me. I have a dock on a lake that had become the neighborhood hangout for ducks and some other water birds, with anywhere from 10-20 birds on the dock at any given time. And all they do is poop. My dock would smell like a zoo and look like a toxic waste site. I bought one of those plastic owls, but he never really worked and now wasps have nested inside his head. The birds get used to him quickly and it ends up having zero deterrent effect. If it ever had any effect, it was extremely localized, maybe within 5 feet of the owl.But this tape has been a miracle so far. I have had it up for a little over a week and we have had zero birds. The tape waves in the wind and makes a little noise, plus it reflects the light very well. I have watched ducks start to swim up to the dock, get about 10 feet away, and then make a u-turn. They do not like this stuff. It is not perfect. There is some noise associated with it which definitely detracts from spending time on the dock. But it is still no comparison to all the bird poop, which made the dock essentially worthless. My hope is over time I can start removing some of the tape and that it will have a residual effect and the ducks will still stay away.Installation Tip - the directions tell you not to puncture the tape because it will tear in the wind. What I did was take a small piece of Gorilla tape and put it at the end of the reflective tape. Then I used a mechanical staple gun to put a staple through the Gorilla tape and reflective tape. This should hold up very well to the wind and elements. No issues so far with lots of wind every day. I've attached a photo so you can see what the installation looks like.UPDATE re BIRD REPELLENT - I have been using the tape for about 6 weeks now and it is mostly still working. The ducks simply do not come around anymore. They were the main problem I was having, so this is definitely a win. I do get some larger water birds from time to time, but that is not too big of a problem. I get maybe a couple small messes a week vs the 10 per day I used to get. I have had to add a few more streamers as time went on to try to cover some gaps that seemed were still getting bird traffic. But over all I would still consider this product a lifesaver for me and my dock.UPDATE re DURABILITY - the durability has been ok, but not great. After six weeks, several of the streamers I made have ripped off, not at the installation point, but rather just mid ribbon they seem to break. I think all the flapping they do in the wind over time causes them to rip. This has happened to about a third of them. Also, one or two are starting to have the shininess wear off (not becoming dull; it actually wears off causing the tape to be transparent and less reflective), so they will need to be replaced. Lastly, after seeing some photos of other installations, I decided to try some where I looped them around the railing and tied it off, rather than using a staple. This uses more product, but seemed to work well and avoids poking holes in the woodwork; however, over time for some reason it seems the ones that are installed this way seem to rip sooner and require more frequent replacement.

UPDATE #2 (7/31/2020): Glad to see my review is continuing to help others. I've still got my original roll of tape that I purchased almost 3 years ago. The strips are definitely durable and can last for several months hanging outside, but understand that they will inevitably tear off at the ends from prolonged exposure to the elements (i.e., strong wind, rain, snow, and sun). When that happens and the woodpeckers start coming back, getting rid of them is just a matter of going outside and attaching fresh tape to the broken ends. Our woodpecker problem has been practically nonexistent for the past 3 years--I still see them flying around outside, but they leave our siding alone unless the strips of tape become very short/damaged--and to this day I am still amazed that this simple solution was the one that actually worked (and continues to work) for us.

    ---------------------------------------------

UPDATE (6/10/18): It's been about 7 months since we initially put up the tape. There were NO woodpeckers throughout that entire time, even as the weather got warmer. The tape has gotten shorter and shorter with age, though (most likely from the wind and the elements slowly tearing the ends off). The ribbons eventually became very short (about 5-6 inches long), and were not able to properly wave in the wind or reflect light. As a result, a small baby woodpecker started coming around and pecking once or twice in the usual spots near the shortened ribbons. It wouldn't usually stay long, but it was definitely pecking more than before when the ribbons were longer. We immediately went outside and duct taped some fresh, long strips of this reflective tape to the ends of the shortened pieces that were already hanging there (rather than completely redoing the entire setup). It's been about 2 weeks since we fixed the ribbons, and NO woodpeckers have been back since. THIS TAPE SERIOUSLY WORKS, GUYS. BUY IT AND SAVE YOUR SANITY!!!

    ---------------------------------------------

TL;DR: Not a SINGLE woodpecker for 2 months since putting up this tape, but it is super noisy when the wind hits it. I'll take the occasional noise over woodpeckers any day, though!!

My family and I have been having an ongoing battle against woodpeckers for years now, and anyone who's had issues with these birds knows how relentless and annoying they are. After constantly (and unsuccessfully) trying to scare them away only to have them return shortly after, we were finally fed up. I came across this product while doing some careful research, and to be completely honest we weren't expecting much despite the glowing reviews. But, we figured it was cheap so it wouldn't be a huge loss if it failed.

We purchased this product in late November and installed it a few days after Thanksgiving, and I am dead serious when I say we have not heard or seen a SINGLE woodpecker on the side of our house since that day. It's incredible that this actually worked. Now it's possible that the woodpeckers have gone somewhere else for the winter and this is all just a huge coincidence (we live in the Midwest so it gets pretty cold, windy, and snowy over here), but I'm pretty sure snow and cold never stopped them from being a nuisance in the past. I'll try to update this review after Spring/Summer/Fall to see if the tape truly stands up against woodpeckers during their more active and annoying months.

On installation - we cut the tape into 16-18 inch ribbons and reinforced one end with duct tape/packaging tape to minimize tearing. (Cut a strip of duct tape a bit longer than the length of your hand, lay one end of the reflective ribbon about halfway up the sticky side of the tape, then fold the rest of the tape over so it "clamps" down on the ribbon, thus creating a reinforced end that isn't likely to tear). We then folded the reinforced end over onto itself to create a small loop and stapled it to hold it in place. From there we fed a ziptie through the loop in the ribbon and secured it to a screw, which we then screwed into the outside of the house on the second story near the woodpecker holes. (Note: don't drill the screws in all the way so the ribbon still has room to wave around). We had two areas of concentrated woodpecker activity on different sides of our house, so for each area we hung 3 ribbons about a foot or so apart from each other near the holes to prevent them from tangling. Despite enduring months of strong winds, rain, and snow, our original 6 ribbons are still completely intact and performing as expected. If you are not willing to use screws or zipties in your situation, I would highly recommend at least reinforcing the ends of your ribbons to minimize tearing, especially if you plan to hang them.

Now for the noise aspect, I'll be honest and admit that I thought people were exaggerating when I was reading all the reviews about how noisy the ribbons were. I just couldn't fathom how a streamer could be THAT loud. Well, I was completely wrong and I'm sorry for doubting you guys haha. Not that it's a bad thing, because the noise is definitely part of the deterrent aspect of this tape, but man is it LOUD. One of the two groups of ribbons we installed is actually on the other side of one of my bedroom walls. The very first night after installing the tape I legit had trouble falling asleep because of the noise. Every time the wind blew, I could hear the tape rustling outside and it sounded like a large animal scratching/scurrying up the side of the house or even like a bird stuck inside the wall flapping its wings like crazy. Over time I got used to it, and it's really not even bad or noticeable unless the wind is blowing particularly hard that day/night, but just know that the tape actually is really noisy.

Overall I would say I am incredibly surprised and impressed at this product. I had pretty low expectations when purchasing it, but it outperformed itself in every way. Over 2 months now since installation and we haven't seen or heard a single woodpecker on the sides of our house where the ribbons are (and they haven't tried to move onto another part of the house either). Although it can get noisy at times (especially if it's hanging right outside your bedroom), I would take that occasional minor inconvenience over incessant pecking/scratching and 6am wake-up calls from woodpeckers ANY day. So far this is proving to be a surprisingly cheap and effective solution to our years-long problem, and I hope this review can help you guys too! Good luck! :)

This stuff worked great! Scared away the dumpster diving ravens in our area.
I manage maintenance for a pretty large church facility that has 8 tenants most of whom are medical related offices aside from the church and school that meet on the campus 5 days a week. We make a lot of trash. We have two large dumpsters stored in large concrete walled box that hides the unsightly trash. Well, the common ravens traveling through our area found that the area made for an easy and delicious snack spot. They'd dive into the dumpster, rip open bags, and scatter their contents all over the place. We tried getting the tenants to close the lids of the dumpsters but it's a pain having to check up on them as they'd have to open the gate to the area and open the lid before throwing their cash in rather than what they were used to in just heaving it over the gate into the dumpster. So I bought this tape hearing it worked in other applications for other people to help scare away the critters. And after installing it on the inside of the space on the walls it seems to have done the trick. It's been several months now and I haven't had to pick up any trash and I haven't seen the ravens hanging around as much anymore either.
I used this in conjunction with a scarecrow owl product I also bought off amazon but honestly I don't think it did much to scare off the ravens as much as this tape did. I found the owl had fallen over in a heavy wind and would have been pretty useless scaring off birds but they never took advantage. So I'm a believer in this scare tape.
The tape isn't sticky tape. It's ribbon tape. You'll need some way to fasten it to your desired location. I didn't want to drill into the concrete/stucco so I used duct tape. It's not pretty but no one will see it. I wouldn't recommend using duct tape on painted wood surfaces though as it might take the paint off with it when you take it down. If installing this in trees I'd probably just tie it to the branches.
I'll say this about the company. Many companies are taking the opportunity to send a follow up email after purchasing their product from amazon. Some of these emails are useful and some are clearly more interested in getting a good review from you. I didn't get that impression from De-bird. In fact their first email was full of good suggestions on how to resolve your bird problems as well as giving me information on how to get help from the company if I wasn't totally satisfied with the experience. It was genuine, helpful, and to the point. Everything a customer wants from a great company. I'd be happy to support them again. They sent two more follow up emails in the next few months to see if everything worked ok. They seem like a great company and I have absolutely no ties to them or benefit from saying this. It's just the impression I get from their willingness to stand by their product and go the extra mile in communication to ensure you're satisfied.
