Editorial Reviews

Esoteric Recordings America is pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered and expanded four-disc clamshell box edition of the classic album, TURN OF THE CARDS by RENAISSANCE. Released in 1974, the album was an artistic triumph and heralded the band's commercial breakthrough in the United States. Featuring highly gifted vocalist Annie Haslam, Michael Dunford (acoustic guitars), John Tout (keyboards, vocals), Jon Camp (bass, vocals) and Terry Sullivan (drums, percussion), TURN OF THE CARDS was recorded in March 1974 at De Lane Lea studios in Wembley, North London and featured the band incorporating symphonic orchestral arrangements into their material extensively on classic pieces such as 'Running Hard', 'Things I Don't Understand' and 'Mother Russia'. The album would also feature the evocative 'Cold is Being' and the celebrated 'Black Flame' which would result in TURN OF THE CARDS being praised as one of the finest works by Renaissance. This expanded edition has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes and also features an entire concert at The Academy of Music in New York City on 17th May 1974 (with a 24-piece orchestra) over two bonus CDs which has been newly mixed from the original 16-track master tapes, including live versions of songs from the album, along with classics such as 'Can You Understand', 'Carpet of the Sun', 'Prologue' and a 25 minute version of 'Ashes Are Burning' featuring guest ANDY POWELL (of WISHBONE ASH) on lead guitar. The fourth disc is a DVD (NTSC / Region Free) which features a new 5.1 Surround sound and high-resolution stereo mix of TURN OF THE CARDS.

This 1974 release opens with the 9'34" Running Hard, which is ushered in with a classical flourish on the acoustic piano courtesy of excellent player John Tout. John Camps superb, trebly Rickenbacker bass provides some nice counterpoint and then the rest of the band gradually joins in, with the delicate soprano of Annie Haslam soaring above. The music of Renaissance is extremely disciplined and the instrumentation and playing style is more in keeping with a symphony orchestra than a rock band. Keyboardist John Tout uses the acoustic piano exclusively with some minor organ and harpsichord work, and does not use synthesizers at all on this recording (if they are used, they are buried deep in the mix). Electric guitars are also absent, which further emphasizes the classical approach. Perhaps the only thing missing from this recording is the "tap-tap-tap" of an impatient conductor tapping his baton on the stand! It is only John Camps bass work and to a much lesser extent, Terence Sullivans drumming that lend the rock aspect to the compositions. I might add that Terence Sullivan is a very sensitive drummer (he is more of a symphony percussionist) and engages in a dialogue with the acoustic piano rather than bulldozing over it. This is largely attributable to his emphasis on cymbal/high-hat/snare work rather than heavy beats on the bass drum/floor toms. The pieces on Turn of the Cards include three short pieces that range from 3'01" to 6'25" (I think of You, Black Flame, Cold is Being) and three longish pieces in the 9'00 - 9'30" range (Running Hard, Things I don't Understand, Mother Russia). There are some absolutely beautiful and haunting moments on this CD including Cold is Being, which is based on Albinoni's excessively melodramatic Adagio for Organ and Strings in G minor. Although Albinoni is not credited on the piece, there is a "thanks to" Albinoni cited in the liner notes, in addition to a "thanks to" composer Jehain Alain (1911-1940) for the introduction to Running Hard. Alain was not credited on the composition either. In summation, this is a wonderful recording made during the period of peak creativity for this band (1973-1977) and is recommended to prog fans that also appreciate classical music. If you like this recording, also check out Ashes are Burning (1973); Scheherezade and other Stories (1975); and Novella (1977).

This would be it. There are some priceless gems in here if you like Renaissance and the kind of music they did. The only thing is, there are five (yes 5) renditions of "Mother Russia" on the four CDs in the album. The band has no shortage of great material so it seems a shame they could not have cut the number of "Mother Russias" down to two, one, or maybe none to make room for other songs.

Recently discovered this incredible band. Great alternative to heavy, guitar driven rock, but still dynamic, jazzy (at times) orchestrated prog rock. Best tracks are Mother Russia, Things I don't Understand, and Running Hard.
This is nice new edition. You get the remastered album, a bonus track, some remixes (although I'm not sure how different they are from the originals), and a single edit of Mother Russia.
You get 2 CDs of the 1974 Academy of Music performance. There are a couple of technical flaws in the recording, but it's worth having. Also included is a DVD-audio of the album in hi-rez stereo and 5.1. The 5.1 mix is not very impressive. It does not make heavy use of the rear channels. They could've left this out and lowered the price a bit. Wish they learned some lessons in remixing for 5.1 from Rush & Pink Floyd.
If you're building your Renaissance collection of studio albums, you definitely need to get this. This one and Scheherazade & other Stories are my two favorites.

I REMEMBER HAVING THIS LP DURING MY HIGH SCHOOL YEARS IN THE 70'S, AND EVEN THOUGH I LOVED IT, I REALIZED BACK THEN THAT THERE WERE AT LEAST THREE CLASSICAL PIECES THAT I DON'T BELIEVE WERE GIVEN ANY CREDIT IN THE ALBUM NOTES.

THE FIRST TRACK, "RUNNING HARD" IS SAID BY MANY REVIEWERS HERE ON AMAZON TO START WITH A "STUNNING" PIANO SOLO! DAMN RIGHT IT'S STUNNING! IT'S A NOTE FOR NOTE RIP OFF OF A FAMOUS ORGAN PIECE CALLED "LITANIES" BY THE INCREDIBLE 20TH CENTURY FRENCH COMPOSER JEHAN ALAIN! AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS NOTICED THIS??

THERE IS ANOTHER TRACK ON THE CD CALLED "COLD IS BEING". THIS IS A RIP OFF OF ALBINONI'S ADAGIO FOR ORGAN AND STRINGS!

THERE IS YET ONE OTHER PIECE ON THE DISC THAT USES THE PIANO PRELUDE BY DEBUSSY CALLED "THE SUNKEN CATHEDRAL".

WOW! AFTER HAVING SAID ALL OF THIS, I STILL HAVE TO SAY THAT I LOVE RENAISSANCE AND I LOVE THIS DISC! IT'S WORTH EVERY PENNY, BUT, COULDN'T RENAISSANCE GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE???? AT LEAST ELP DID THAT AND IT PUSHED ME INTO OTHER AVENUES OF MUSIC THAT I WOULDN'T HAVE OTHERWISE VENTURED INTO. THEY DON'T RIP OFF MUSIC LIKE THAT ANYMORE!

I gave this 5 stars because this is a 5 star recording. To give it less would be wrong. I bought this new package because of the 5.1 mix DVD. Those of us who are used to Steven Wilson remixing these older recordings (Jethro Tull/King Crimson/Yes/Roxy Music/Tears for Fears - the list goes on and on) are used to a brilliant recording taken to another level, yet at the same time having the 5.1 mix be something that utilizes that medium in its present brilliance but also staying true to the original stereo mix. Sadly this is not either of those things. You have a orchestra here that could have been used in such a great way for a 5.1 mix. You have 16 track tapes at your disposal. Why not use what you have to take all this a step further. Sadly again, no. Please buy this if you love this band. I am glad I did and still give it a 5 out of 5 because that is what it is. 5.1 mix, sorry to say is not what it could have been......

One of the best and most underrated prog rock groups of the '70s was Renaissance. Here they are during their absolute peak. Was there ever a better vocalist in this genre than Annie Haslam? Glorious. Divine. Not to be missed.

A Song For All Seasons"、"Live At Carnegie Hall"、"Novella" ですが、今作はこれらに続く第4弾になります。
