Great Northern Popcorn Pit Popper Campfire Firepit Grill Heavy Duty Popper
The Pit Popper was designed by popcorn scientists to eliminate the dreaded burnt knuckle phenomenon that occurs when using an ordinary stovetop popper over an open fire. Heavy fireproof mits have long been the standard method for protection. Oven mitts are a nasty biosphere for things that crawl. They also greatly hamper the smooth stroking technique needed for popcorn cooking perfection. The long handle has long been the preferred solution, but a long handles is a pain in the pack for transporting. The introduction of the Pit Popper extension handle has revolutionized the open fire popcorn experience. Now one person can continually pop pan after pan of delicious popcorn with no danger of burnt knuckles. Only one word truly describes the newfangled 2 foot extended arm popper - Awesome!

- pops corn just fine
- handle is long enough for campfire use
- popcorn around the campfire has quickly become a tradition when we go camping
Cons
- it wants to fall apart when you shake it and dump everything into the fire
- handle wants to come loose from the lid (and has)
- lid wants to come loose from the popper (and almost always does)
- at best it feels loose and rattly, you have to develop a technique to shake it gently
I found that if you over-bend the clips that hold the lid to the popper, it helps keep it from just dropping out of the clip. And, there's a curled retaining clip on the side of one lid (the one that is not supposed to open) that fell off, but I riveted it back on and now it holds firm.
When you shake it front to back, the big clips want to come loose, and side to side the small clip wants to come loose. It's kind of a hassle, but it works, but I don't know of a better way to make popcorn over a campfire.
The inside of the bowl is impossible to clean out, so you get black stuff burned to it pretty quickly. At first this bothered me and I spent a lot of time trying to clean it, before giving up and now it's just seasoning as far as I'm concerned.
I added a couple teaspoons of olive oil and popcorn kernels and held it over campfire sharking lightly and soon we heard the popping! We ate it right from the popper...
Clean up was easy enough and storage is OK, the handle is collapsible but you do have the "pot" to deal with for storage, this is not a major issue for us but it could be if you are trying to keep your gear simple and compact, however I see no reason why the pot could not be used for other cooking task as needed.
I did have to bend or reshape the top clips to the pot as they were a little loose and our first round hit the ground when someone reached a little too hard into the pot to grab a handful of popcorn and the pot separated from the handle and top.. after a little tweaking to the clips it was all good afterwards :)
