I Am Ozzy Hardcover – January 25, 2010
Purchase options and add-ons
It haunts me, all this crazy stuff. Every day of my life has been an event. I took lethal combinations of booze and drugs for thirty f**king years. I survived a direct hit by a plane, suicidal overdoses, STDs. I've been accused of attempted murder. Then I almost died while riding over a bump on a quad bike at f**king two miles per hour.
People ask me how come I'm still alive, and I don't know what to say. When I was growing up, if you'd have put me up against a wall with the other kids from my street and asked me which one of us was gonna make it to the age of sixty, which one of us would end up with five kids and four grandkids and houses in Buckinghamshire and Beverly Hills, I wouldn't have put money on me, no f**king way. But here I am: ready to tell my story, in my own words, for the first time.
A lot of it ain't gonna be pretty. I've done some bad things in my time. I've always been drawn to the dark side, me. But I ain't the devil. I'm just John Osbourne: a working-class kid from Aston, who quit his job in the factory and went looking for a good time."

- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2024Whether you love him or hate him, you'll love this book! Ozzy's honesty throughout his life story is amazing. He doesn't sugarcoat his experiences or his mistakes and looks back on them in a way that will have you laughing your head off! The first 3/4 of the book is interesting and funny and provides background info that alot of fans may not know, but the last 1/4 of the book is heartfelt and touching. Hearing Ozzy speak about his struggle with drugs and alcohol and the love he has for his wife and children is beautiful. He gives hope to others who struggle with addiction without coming off as preachy and has the rare ability to laugh at himself. Love this book!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2010What a character. What a life! I've never been a huge Black Sabbath fan (loved "Changes" and "Crazy Train" though), but became an Ozzy/Sharon fan when their MTV show was on. He was so sweet and loving to his family and for me, that was totally unexpected. How could you not love Ozzy Osbourne after seeing how he was with his family?
This book tells us about his life growing up, when his career started, his stint in prison, when he got into drugs and alcohol, when and how he met Sharon and everything in-between. I cannot believe he's still living, but I am so happy he is. The man has a phenomenal sense of humor!
He tells a story about chickens and their coop....OMG, it was just unbelievable. His adventure at the Alamo with the dressing gown...holy cow...I laughed 'til I cried and I never, in a million years, would have thought I'd laugh about a Colonoscopy! This book is HILARIOUS and sad at the same time because Ozzy is a VERY funny man, but very troubled emotionally and drugged himself to the extreme. Everything he did he did when he was high AND drunk.
I really enjoyed reading about people and bands I listened to back in the day. Ten Years After and ELO. Tommy Lee (HELLO! I think I know more about Tommy's body parts than I needed to know! LOL!) and so many more bands from the 70s that I use to listen to and love. That was fun to read. They were all so young and just starting their careers too. Fun stuff. It brought back some great memories.
I enjoyed this book SOOOOO much and if you like Ozzy, you will love this book. I'm just flabbergasted he could remember enough to fill an entire book. ;) Read it. You'll enjoy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2010I Am Ozzy is a quick and fun read. Ozzy goes for a conversational and light tone as he tells his hilarious road stories, but like some recent rock and roll autobiographies that I've recently read (Slash & The Heroin Diaries), Ozzy devotes an over-proportionate amount of time going over and over his alcohol and drug abuse. I was afraid that the book might turn into a dissertation about what happens when you become an addict, then hypocritically preach to the reader about staying off drugs. And sure, Ozzy spent a lot of time recounting his drug and alcohol induced escapades, but he NEVER preached. On the contrary, he couldn't care less what the reader did with his stories of mayhem while being wasted out of his mind.
The first two-thirds of the book are the most fun and contain the most amounts of laugh out loud moments. And I mean laugh out loud; I'd be sitting on a plane with my Kindle and suddenly break out laughing like a madman. You'd have thought I was Ozzy based on some of the looks that I got.
Ozzy starts by talking us through his life leading up to Black Sabbath; you might think this to move a bit slowly, but it doesn't because of how interesting it was to hear about the development of one of the world's most renowned rock & roll bands. Plus, if you're an Ozzy fan like me, the anticipation of already knowing what it's all leading up to keeps the pages turning at a quick pace. The book is a treat once Ozzy gets into the story of Black Sabbath and the crazy and comical stories that occurred during this period. Ozzy spends a deserved portion of the book on the pre-Black Sabbath and Black Sabbath era.
Ozzy finishes off the first two-thirds of the book with the demise of Sabbath and the start of his solo career over the first two records (Blizzard of Ozz & Diary of a Madman). The combination of this being only a 3 year period and Ozzy's limited ability to remember much due to his alcohol and drug abuse make this part of the book relatively and sadly too short. Nevertheless, it is a part of the book that is filled with classic, comical and of course one of the most tragic moments.
The last third of the book is primarily devoted to Ozzy's rise to worldwide star-status through MTV's The Osbournes, his continuing accounts of drug abuse and alcoholism, and his eventual road to a cleaner way of life. Unlike the first two-thirds of the book, little time or mention is made of the making of his subsequent records and how he recruited the personnel for his new band(s). I would have liked to have seen more on his road escapades with Zakk Wylde versus the amount of time he took to talk about the day to day filming of The Osbournes.
Anyway, I Am Ozzy is a good, funny read and I'd recommend it to Ozzy fans and casual readers alike. Here's a funny story that's not included in Ozzy's book: In early 2010 while Ozzy was appearing on The Howard Stern Show to promote the book, Howard recounted a section early on in the book about how the members of Black Sabbath would send women up to Ozzy's hotel room while the band was out on the road. Howard said, "Man, that must have been cool to have all those women." Ozzy said in his mumbled way, "No, that never happened. No one sent me women." Howard said, "But Ozzy it's right here in your book. Have you read your own book?" Ozzy said quite simply, "No." Laughter erupts in the studio. The guy really is crazy.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2024Despite the terrible aspect of substance abuse and excess, this was entertaining to the point I couldn’t stop reading. My wife always knew I was reading this because I was laughing out loud. The best is I could always read this hearing a British accent. I learned a lot of words and innuendos. It was like Ozzy wrote every word. And you can tell everything was from his heart.

Livro legal para conhecer sobre a vida do Izzy até o momento em que o livro foi escrito. O jeito em que está escrito parece que ele está contando uma história a você com as gírias do jeito que ele mesmo fala.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read! 10 to 12 hours of a fast action book!
Well, Ozzy is Ozzy. You should expect anything but the ordinary.
The book is so bluntly written, even for the die hard fans it is a surprise to learn new things about Ozzy.
Cons: It felt like the end is kind of rushed, or it may be me not wanting to reach the end of the book...

5.0 out of 5 stars The unique life and times of Ozzy in his own words
Beyond doubt Ozzy Osbourne has made a unique name for himself and has become, on top of his musical successes, a household name due to his many TV appearances and shows. It’s a name most people will be familiar with, and whatever they think about him, will at least acknowledge that although sometimes controversial and outlandish, he’s nevertheless a colourful and interesting character well deserving of an autobiography of his own.
And this is it: Ozzy’s own unique insights into his life, escapades and struggles with addiction. I think it’s a great book and definitely readable, shedding light on many of the episodes and events that have shaped his life on the road, in the media and at home. It’s all here: his early hardships and imprisonment, his time in a slaughterhouse, his rise through pioneering band Black Sabbath, his solo career, his craziness, the doves, the bat, the Alamo episode, Randy Rhoads, the plane crash, band member conflicts, Don Arden, the love for his wife Sharon, the night he nearly strangled her, her influence on his career, her cancer, his quad bike accident, his father’s death, his regrets, his joys, and his multitudinous addictions and struggles with them.
The book is undeniably funny and at times quite touching, exposing his trials, tribulations and foibles as a human being and a personality at the forefront of a lifestyle known for its excesses. However, it also shows him as being a devoted (albeit sometimes struggling) family man. What I like is that Ozzy is quite philosophical about his life and acknowledges with candor where he has gone wrong. One thing I’m not too keen on is that I think he’s overemphasising the animal cruelty bits for dramatic effect (especially the chicken coop episode), although he later states there’s no excuse for such actions.
I would have preferred the book to have more insights into the creative processes of his music and the people he’s worked with rather than being predominately centred upon his addictions and wild escapades, but it’s his autobiography expressed the way he’s wanted it. In other words, it’s uniquely Ozzy. It’s also an all round entertaining read with little to detract from it. As a representative of who he is it does an admirable job. Whatever views one might have of Ozzy, he’s not in the least pretentious, ready to admit his mistakes and appreciates what fame and fortune have brought him.
There’s over 400 printed pages (although I’m reviewing from the Kindle edition) but at no time does the book drag, and there’s plenty to hold interest, As far as autobiographies go, it’s a lot more interesting and entertaining than perhaps some other celebrity autobiographies / biographies I’ve read. All in all, it’s difficult not to like Ozzy. He’s all about entertainment and that’s what he’s done: he’s superbly entertained nations for decades, and for that we have to give him thanks and credit for. Do I recommend the book? Yes, absolutely. Please note that it may not be suitable for younger readers.
