Fresh and realistic ways to lead with learning

Fresh and realistic ways to lead with learning
Learning in the Wild highlights the importance of making learning an intentional part of your life, and then offers easy and accessible ways to learn every day. While it's written for professional leaders, the learning habits found in this book can be applied to anyone who values lifelong learning, personal growth, and a spirit of curiosity. As a parent, it was fun to read this book through the lens of leading my family and it motivated me to foster an environment of learning for my kids. Learning in the Wild got me to think about how often people are learning, and it made me excited to seek out learning opportunities, big and small.

One quote from the book that really stuck with me was, "With reflection, we are able to focus on learning goals, increase self-motivation, and empower ourselves to think about different solutions...Reflections are truly magical. Real leaders reflect (p. 45)." It really made me take a look at my own habits and how I tend to get bogged down by daily tasks, and reminded me to focus on my learning goals. A much needed moment to pause, discern, and move forward.

This book has 21 practical ways to make learning a daily habit, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to transform their thinking and use tangible tools and exercises to learn and grow. Seriously, think about sharing it with a friend, your team, or anyone in a XFN role!

The author opens the aperture and supplies straightforward advice that every leader can apply now. Based on real life examples, this book delivers fresh ideas of how leaders need to approach learning to both maximize team morale and productivity but also how to deliver sustainable results. This is the most insightful and practical book on learning that I have ever read – written for today’s world.

I started a new role leading professional development at my organization and this book was a game changer. It is digestible with short pointent chapters, full of memorable stories and anecdotes, and references a wide array of behavioral, cognitive, and industry literature. I've made a list of what I want to dig into further. Learning how to teach starts with learning how to learn.

Erin is brilliant. Her design thinking background comes through loud and clear in this book. I love how she breaks the book up into 21 easily digestible chapters and how each chapter builds on the next and makes you think! As a lifelong learner myself I truly appreciate Erin’s passion for learning and how with this book she has taken years of experience and presented us with such super information and tools on how we can infuse learning opportunities within our companies. This is a must read for anyone who is responsible for the growth and happiness of their employees!!

Erin Huizenga's "Learning in the Wild" is a concise compendium of effective ideas for increasing opportunities for everyday learning and creativity. Throughout, Huizenga lists thoughtfully written questions, suggestions, and strategies. I found the chapter called "Lead Opportunity Labs" to be especially useful. I've added Erin's book to my list of go-to resources and plan to revisit it often in the future. Highly recommended.
