I really like the overall appearance - it looks & feels more expensive. A nice balance of good clean looks, design & features.
The even finished deep blue dial is well done and in lighting casts a deep rich metallic blue sunburst in
an appealing way. Just a nice deep shade of blue. Under subdue lighting it looks black. I like it.
*Quality/Fit/Finish - Overall nicely done. Dive-style with a touch of class.
*Hacking & Winding - desirable features.
*Lume - nice and bright charged, then I can see time through the night. Bold hour/minute hands, well done applied markers.
*Screw Down Crown - bit small and tight (new) I can manage without frustration. Nice logo touch on crown cap. Screw down threads are smooth.
*Bezel - firm with no slop. I have no problem turning it. Positive Tactile 120-clicks. Aligns @ 12.
*Second Hand - (6bps) has a red tip and a touch of lume - just nicely done. Almost a smooth sweep - no loud tick tick tick.
*Day/Date - I can do without but its a nicely done. Framed and good contrast.
*Case - Although I prefer all brushed, the combination of polished and brush is nicely done/finished.
*Screw Down Case Back - SS back. No plate with screws or press fit. And no need to open just to change a battery because there isn't one.
And good I don't see the beating guts because then I would have to wear it backwards and not know what time it is.
I find its easy to read at a glance (aging eyeballs).
After checking I got a working movement and all the crown applied functions work, I put on a 22mm BluShark strap (black/gray). Plenty of room
to slip in the strap. It just feels fine on my smaller wrist worn just snug (I wear watches on the inside of my wrist). I prefer a 22mm size strap.
Not overly large to give me crown/crown guard pinch. I prefer a 40-44mm size watch for daily wear.
I would gladly pay the extra for an Orient fit sapphire over mineral but it is what it is.
Received via Amazon purchase in 2 days. No package or item damage. Watch came in watch box, band over pillow, Orient tag, Instructions & warranty info.
Full week of use I find my example gains only a couple seconds a day. I sure can't complain about that for an automatic out of the box.
I felt it was ready for another daily watch. My Seiko Chrono has served me well but I was ready for new & different, opt a dive-style.
I really like it. Wears & looks good, my size, lume, lets me know its no plastic cheap piece and doesn't tick loudly.
The Orient Ray II seem to fit a lot of what I was looking for, a solid bargain of desired features.
Diving into smoked baby backs, hot wings, ice cream etc. it'll take it and beyond.
Add (3/9/18) - This watch has been holding at gaining 2 seconds per 24 hours which for me is impressive for an automatic.
Just wearing it daily has kept it running.
I've had an automatic some years back and it would whack out on time so I was a bit hesitant for another, but reviews and the design of this watch got me to giving another a try - very satisfied with this purchase (I would have paid more - had I known what this was really like).
Got some nice compliments on the watch, some who are into any diver style watches.
Still a solid bargain diver style watch.
Pros:
- Lume is better than most watches at this price.
- This is a great looking watch. I didn't initially love it after wearing a Submariner clone for years, but it has really grown on me and I think this is a fantastic, unique design.
- The case feels and looks thin, making this a relatively low-profile and non-bulky diver.
- The band feels and looks sturdier than similar watches at this price point (i.e Invicta Pro Diver) and the clasp is smooth and strong.
- The movement is quite accurate, and certainly for this price point. I'm seeing ~5spd fast, however other reviews have reported that this will change as the movement wears in (they are assembled in a non-used state).
Cons:
- Lume is not as good as 'nicer' watches
- The mineral-crystal glass seems to 'smudge' more easily than other watches I've used. Reviews mention scratching, which is probably likely, and a sapphire replacement is a common upgrade.
- The crown is a little too small and not knurled enough, as has been reported ad-nauseum.
- Some reviews complained about the bezel being hard to turn. It *is* harder to turn than some other divers, but I haven't had a significant issue.
- I would love to see a clear case back for this.
- The date wheel in the second language is a little weird and it takes a bit of time to change over. If you're up in the early morning you may get an unexpected date reading.
My overall impression of this watch is positive. The build quality is that of a watch 3-5 times the price. Here's what I like about it:
- Accurate timekeeping (gained 12 seconds after a week).
- Hacking and manual winding (this is important to me because I like to set my watch to the atomic clock)
- Screwdown crown
- Day/date complication (especially useful while working from home and losing track of the day of the week)
- Tight and snappy rotating bezel. There is very little play between clicks. In fact, it's leaps and bounds better than my SKX's bezel.
- Overall usability. I can wear this while working, out on a hike, mowing the lawn, playing with my kid in the water, wherever really.
- The lume is great
- Great attention to detail. The logo on the crown is a nice touch. The printing on the dial is sharp. The chapter ring lines up to the hashes. Just a nice piece overall.
- It fits my 7-inch wrist amazingly. The 41.5mm diameter looks just right. I prefer 39mm-44mm watches so this is just right.
Downsides of the watch:
- The bracelet is OK, too. I removed two links easily and the micro-adjustment let me set it to the right diameter to fit my wrist. The lack of solid end links makes it feel cheap. Not to mention, the finish is a bit rough. But what do you expect at this price point? It's still pretty good.
- The manual winding feels a bit rough. Way less refined compared to my other more expensive watches. This is just nit-picky though.
- No ISO rating, but who cares? I'm never going to use it for diving—I probably won't use my SKX for diving either so this is a moot point.
After wearing this for a week, I put my SKX in storage. I think it's a better piece. But this watch's long-term durability and accuracy are still unknown. The F6522 caliber movement doesn't have the reputation of the 7S26 but things look bright for this in-house Orient movement.
In conclusion, you should buy this watch. It's super affordable, practical, and good looking. Plus, it looks great on a NATO!
