perfect other then a few minor details "read again for 3 & 5 year update"
This is a very good power supply for the money very tight voltage regulation very accurate current output and they definitely did make improvements over the first generation of this particular power supply a few things prevented it from being a100% ultimate Steal the Bridge rectifier that's bolted to the heatsink where the mosfets are has absolutely no thermal paste on the back of it which will hinder its thermal transfer, ill be most likely putting a decent amount of artic siler mx 4 non electrically conductive thermal paste on the back of it to help with heat transfer the mosfets on the other hand have plenty of thermal paste on their heat spreaders and a nice Mica insulator in between them, other issue is the voltage regulators and mosfets on the board in the to-220 packages have no heat sinks on them which they should all have their own heatsink for heat dissapation the power Inlet wires going from the IEC power connector to the main board or to the Transformer are a little too thin for my liking as well as a Transformers secondary wiring I believe thats at the bare minimum for safety if they were to go with 16 gauge for all that that would be perfect instead of 20gauge or so that's on there one of the last thing that I see with this power supply are the no name brand of capacitors they are 105 degrees Celsius rated which is great but they're still no name brands they should have went for a Panasonic FM series for the main filter capacitors and then for supporting electrolytic capacitors they should have went with nichicons uld, uhe or utt series if they were to do those things this would be an absolute Steal which it still is I wouldn't mind paying 10 more dollars for that little bit extra otherwise this is a well-designed unit the power transformer is also pretty robust for the price last thing I'll say is I saw another review saying that if you draw more than like 100 milliamps from it you go to turn it off and turn it on there's a 6 volt Spike for a Split Second that review i believe was a couple years old so I think they might have improved that design since then if they were to correct all these things I've listed as I've said before this power supply would be absolutely incredible which it still is but it just needs a little bit extra to get there I have high definition pictures of the inside despite this stuff this is a good beginner power supply however I do advise anybody who reads this to try to get in there and put some good thermal paste in the back of that bridge rectifier if not anything else hopefully the manufacturer reads this. Update, 3 years later after putting 800 to 1400 hours on it, driving all kinds of loads at every voltage and current setting even running it for days at a time, it's been very reliable and exceed my expectations, very quiet power, these days I have it powering a emotiva xps 1 gen 2 phonostage for my turn table, I gotta say, the power it puts out is nearly as clean as a battery, it leaks absolutely no noise into my signal chain that I can here or see on a screen with a spectograph doing 192khz 24 bit vinyl rips! Incredible for the money and best bang for your buck and only 60 bucks, why go for anything else, usually things at this price lie and over announce ratings, NOT THIS POWERSUPPLY, only two things that I notice, if the device you're driving with it injects a lot of noise back into the power supply, it can cause it to freak out a bit, but that is a very rare occurrence, you'd have to be really pushing it with questionable things which speaks volumes about it's stability, absolutely incredible. One thing I had to do is put 3 in one electric motor oil in the fan barring as it got a bit noisy, other then that, I'm very happy with it. Buy with confidence. Update 4/11/2024, I've used it hundreds of more times since the last update and it still works as good as the day I bought it, even recently used it to charge a full size car battery out of a jeep loaded down fully for 25mins at 12.8v 5 amps and it was perfect and charged the battery without issues. Only was fully taken apart once to fully clean it from dust using compressed air, then to also lube the fam bareings and another time to fully repaste the output transistors and bridge rectifier after fully cleaning the back of those components with a qtip and 99 percent isopropyl, I used artic's mx-6 thermal paste to repadte the rectifier and output transistors and as you would expect, its still perfect and still works great, I had to remove both filter capacitors from the board to repaste the bridge rectifier and output transistors though, definitely recommend a grounded soldering station to do this, specifically the hakko fx 888D to reduce the risk of esd, I also shot some deoxit d5 into the potentiometers that control current & voltage, the voltage/current on off button & power button too, then, worked them all well to get the fluid deep inside to condition them and also, reflow a few solder joints. One day when I feel like it ill recap it too. Great power supply even 5 years later with thousands of hours on it. Probably around 3000 to 3500 hours on it or so.

Research alot of differnt models of power supplies and settled on this unit. So far it has performed well for my applications in testing of 5v-20v circuits, as well as, for electroplating activities. Have run it under load for 2-3 hours without any issues with overheating or tripping any fuses. The output readings are consistently accurate when tested. The fine adjustment knob comes in handy for ensuring that you delivering a precise amount of voltage/amps. The front panel is easy to use and all controls are logically placed. Having the master power shut off and the temp shutoff on the front is very handy and allows you to place it on a workbench without have to use a alot of space to reach behind the unit to power off. The size is reasonable and does not take up alot of space.

As I am learning electronics for the first time, the Dr. Meter linear DC power supply is my first PS. I spent days looking over specifications of similar units including reading all the reviews. I take reviews lightly because I know that, in this day and age, you can't tell the expertise of the person writing the review, and so many people just don't know what they are doing. I can get a bit of an indication by how they use grammar, write sentences, and overall how they write about their experience. It seemed that the Dr. Meter linear power supply received slightly better reviews than others. I knew I wanted a linear power supply for the reduced noise they produce, however, I have not yet tested for noise at the time I write this review.

From being a craftsman most of my life, I can usually tell quality when I see and use it. The packaging of this unit was very good, better than other pieces of equipment I've received over the years. Amazon double boxed it which is the prefered method of packaging I prefer so as to reduce possible damage during transportation. Upon opening the first thing I noticed was the fit and finish of the power supply. They were excellent. I was also initially impressed by the marketing card for their customer service. The company seems to care that their customers are satisfied. The manual is another thing, however. It was obviously written by a person whose English is a second language. For someone who is more of a beginner than I, this could be an issue. Luckily I have a friend who is an electronics engineer who can guide me through proper operation of the PS.

While I have not pushed the unit to it's capacity (I see no need to do that), it has worked perfectly under the loads I've required thus far (20V 1A). Those loads are well below the maximum the unit states it was designed to carry. The constantly running fan, although audible, doesn't seem to be as annoying as other reviews have stated. The clicking of relays as voltage is increased or decreased is a bit odd, but that just might be because I lack experience with power supplies. Finally, the voltage and amperage settings remain stable during use which indicates to me to be from a good design. Even when the relays trip as voltage increases or decreases, the rate of change remains smooth.

All in all, I'm glad I chose the Dr. Meter Linear DC Power Supply for my needs.
