The things you want most for your child are the things only God can do . . . so you pray.

As parents we want to protect our children; we want them to move forward in life; most importantly, we want them to take hold of and grow in Christ. And while the advice offered by parenting experts can be helpful, at some point we realize there are no simplistic formulas or sure-fire methods. We need wisdom from God’s Word for this all-important task.

In
The One Year Praying through the Bible for Your Kids, trusted author Nancy Guthrie weaves together wisdom and insight from each day’s reading in The One Year Bible, providing a parenting prayer devotional full of encouragement through the triumphs and turbulence of parenting.

Each of the 365 daily readings contains:

  • An anchor Scripture verse for the day
  • A devotional reflection on that Scripture, offering truth and hope for parents to take hold of
  • Fresh words to help you pray for your child
  • Verses to follow along with the One Year Bible Reading Plan
Day by day you’ll find your dreams and desires for your children are becoming shaped more by Scripture than by the culture around you. Worry less, pray more, and help yourself to a daily dose of hope, perspective, and grace as you parent.

“God has been preparing me my whole life for teaching his Word,” says Nancy Guthrie. “He has blessed me with so many sound Bible teachers to sit under—from my days as a college student in Bible classes, to amazing Sunday School teachers, Bible Study Fellowship teaching leaders, gifted pastors at my church, Cornerstone Presbyterian Church —as well as teachers and preachers from all over the world that I listen to and learn from online.”

But Nancy says the most important thing God has given her is a love for him and for his Word. “To me, Gods Word is a treasure to be mined,” she says. “The deeper I go, the more I see its wisdom, the more it authenticates itself, the more it reveals to me the beauty of God’s plan to redeem all things through Christ.”

Nancy’s life experience has also significantly affected her teaching. “I’ve had to dig into God’s Word in search of answers to hard questions about God and how he works, and I find that my readers or listeners usually have the same struggles and questions. And while I share openly the deep hurts in my life, I also like to laugh. I often have people who hear me teach say that I'm very real. That’s what I want to be."

Nancy and her husband, David, have a thirty-year-old son, Matt, who works with his dad creating kids musicals for the church through Little Big Stuff Music. They also have a daughter, Hope, and a son, Gabriel, who were born with a rare genetic disorder called Zellweger Syndrome and each lived six months.

Nancy offered many of the lessons she learned from the loss of two of their children in her first book, Holding On to Hope: A Pathway of Suffering to the Heart of God which was published in 2002. Since then, Nancy has continued to write books that reflect her compassion for hurting people and her passion for applying God's Word to real life. Her desire to grow in her understanding of God's Word has prompted her to pursue graduate work in theological studies via Reformed Theological Seminary Global. She and her husband, David, host weekend Respite Retreats for couples who have faced the death of a child. She speaks regularly at conferences nationally and internationally, and is a regular contributor to The Gospel Coalition including hosting the Help Me Teach the Bible podcast.

Most recently, Nancy has been focused on her mission to infiltrate women’s Bible study in the local church with biblical theology. “I regularly have women who have worked their way through all five of my Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament Bible Study series tell me that those studies helped them to see connections in the Bible they had never seen before. And that thrills me,” says Nancy. She wrote Even Better Than Eden to take women a step further into understanding some of the major themes than run from Genesis to Revelation in the Bible. And in the Biblical Theology Workshops for Women she is now offering around the country and internationally, she is training women how to trace these themes for themselves. “The workshops are energetic and fun and women leave telling me that their minds are spinning with all they’ve learned and their hearts are warmed by seeing Christ in new ways. Nothing could make me happier.”

Nancy and her husband, David, make their home in Nashville, Tennessee where, according to Nancy, life is less about professional pursuits than about the ordinary aspects of being a wife, mother, friend, and follower of Jesus, with clothes to wash, e-mails to answer, and a friend to listen to.

I won this book at a Women's Conference. I didn't expect the gigantic blessing it would be to me. It has reminded me of the truths in Scripture that apply to all children -- no matter the age, stage or spiritual condition. I have given it as a gift and recommended it to many. I love that it is read daily since anxiety about children creeps up all the time and we, as Believers, need to be reminded of God's sovereignty and promises. It has given me great peace.

I’m so happy I found this book! It’s gotten me to read, study and pray through the Bible with my little one on my heart.

Each day is a passage of scripture, devotional and then a prayer. It’s short and sweet (perfect for a busy mom like me) but is full of wisdom and accomplishes a lot.
    1) It gets me into scripture each day.
    2) The devotions help me reflect on the scripture reading in terms of my child and my role a parent.
    3) The prayers are scripture based and are a great model of how to take the promises of God found throughout the Bible and turn them into prayers for your children.

I love that this book gets me reading my Bible and talking to God about my child. There are SO many Christian parenting books out there that try to tell you all of the things that you need to do to be the “perfect” parent. I know the authors of those books are well meaning, but reading those kind of books often leaves me feeling inadequate and a failure. This book doesn’t do that at all. It doesn’t tell you what you should or shouldn’t be doing. It just points you to the Bible and to God.

Being a parent is hard. There are no perfect parents and there are no perfect children. The devotion that I read today (May 31) pointed out that Jesus actually was a perfect child and even still being His mother was far from easy. Given that being a parent can be so challenging I can’t think of a better thing that we can do than to go to God with our children. This book encourages just that! I can’t recommend it enough!

After praying to grow closer to God last year, I received a NIV bible in year as a gift but truthfully was too lazy to commit to reading it daily. After almost losing my daughter through a sudden illness in early December & her miraculous healing by God, I felt even more compelled to grow closer to God. I found this book around Christmas, purchased it and started the new year with it. I haven’t looked back since. I believe and hope I’ll read it yearly, and have gifted it to close friends and family. It goes perfectly with the NIV bible in a year.
    You won’t regret it!
