About the author
Hello! Thanks for checking out my profile on Amazon.
The most important thing that you can know about me is that I have a large and very close family and extended family here in Littleton, CO. I am so lucky to have two lovely daughters and a very supportive husband . . .and two dogs: Chocolate Moose, Moose -- a standard poodle -- and Bud-Lite, Buddy -- a toy poodle -- but neither one is a frou-frou poodle!
My daughter, Coles Miller Whalen, is a singer/songwriter on tour now across the US. You can hear her music at www.ColesWhalen.com , and her children's CD, which she made as a benefit for KID Foundation at www.KIDFoundation.org/products .
My daughter, Marita Miller Whalen is a student at GW Univ where she received a Presidential scholarship to the Elliott School of International Affairs. She is changing the world one internship at a time.
My husband is a screen-play writer wannabe, and a world series of poker wannbe. He loves to cook, make beer, plan vacations, and have fun. [He also has a day job as an eye surgeon.]
We have a close family and our favorite activity is white-water kayaking/rafting in fabulous Colorado! See you on the river!
I am so thrilled to have opened the Sensory Therapies And Research (STAR) Center with my partner Ron Minson MD. Now we can see babies, children, adolescents and adults. We provide OT and Dynamic Listening (usually in combination) and have had so much joy seeing such rapid changes in our clients. See more at www.STARcenter.us
I also direct the KID Foundation Research Institute. I founded the KID Foundation in 1979 to provide services to children and families with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). Our four highest priorities are: Family Support, Research, Education and Advocacy. We have the only full-time program of research in the world devoted to SPD. I am passionate about unlocking the mysteries of SPD and figuring out what treatments are effective for children and adults with SPD.
KID Foundation runs the largest web-site about SPD in the world, getting over 30,000 hits per week. Come visit us there at www.SPDnetwork.org !!
The website has many features including SPD PC, Parent Connections, a grassroots network that provides support, information, and understanding to anyone who lives with a child who has a Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). SPD PC is sponsored by the KID Foundation and run by parents. The members support each other though regular meetings that feature group discussions, education, and guest speakers. Check it out at www.SPDNetwork.org/parentconnection
SPD network also has a free resource directory that includes nationwide listings and profiles of a wide variety of service providers from hair salons to occupational therapists and pediatricians and others who are experienced in working with people with SPD. You can enter yourself in the data base if you are a provider or search by city, state, type of service etc. if you are a parent looking for services. Visit us there at www.SPDnetwork.org/directory.
Come visit us at STAR center or KID Foundation located at 5655 South Yosemite St. # 302-305. That's in Greenwood Village CO 303) 221-STAR or 303) 794-1182. I am rarely free for phone calls but phone appointments can be set at that number or at info@STARcenter.us
If you are a family member of a person with SPD and have a story to share for my next book, please send it by email to programs@KIDFoundation.org . It is difficult for me to answer individual questions but I appreciate so much having stories from my professors (the kids and families who have taught me so much) for my new book.
In closing I want to thank the individual contributors, the foundation supporters and the corporate sponsors of KID Foundation. Without the support of all of you we could not move forward with our important mission to help children and adults who have SPD. Thank you one and all!
Lucy Jane Miller

- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2012Lots of little things were off with my daughter. I thought it was related to a divorce but then school just got more difficult for her and she ranged between very sweet to screaming. The pediatrician just wanted to put her on an ADHD patch - without even seeing her. That MIGHT have helped her focus but would not account for her not being able to ride a bike (age nine at the time) or never being able to remember to hang up her towel after a shower or why she slept poorly or why - too many to list. While waiting for a neuro appt to deal with her headaches, someone recommended an Occupational Therapist. She diagnosed her with Dyspraxia among other things. She recommended this book. It was a few pages in and I began to cry. A mom is quoted as saying something like "by the end of day we are so worn out just from getting through the day that I do not know how to help my child". I was no longer alone!!
My daughter ended up seeing the book out. She asked what it was about. I reminded her why we were in OT and I said the book was written to help families with children that had the same issues. Her mouth dropped. She said "you mean I am not the only one".
Since she has continued to see specialists. One said she had auditory processing disorder. We are awaiting results of blood work and an EEG as another doctor thinks she may have epilepsy. A year ago I held her hand and promised not to stop until I figured out how to help her enjoy her childhood. We are still working at it!
I have so many highlights and tabs in this book. Once I have my daughter on track, I am going to buy multiple copies of this book and write our story. I will then take them to every pediatrician I can find and ask them to open their eyes. No other child should have to suffer as long as my daughter and no one figure it out.
Don't give up on helping your child! THANK YOU for writing this book!!!
P.S. Also look into Hippo (Horse) Therapy. It has helped her core and her confidence!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2006Have you ever wanted to be a 'little mouse in the corner' to see what life is really like for children with a Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)? You can do that through Lucy Miller's new book, Sensational Kids. This book is truly sensational. I've been recommending it to a lot of the parents and teachers of students I service.
Part I includes the basics about Sensory Processing Disorder (background, symptoms and warning signs, assessment and diagnosis, treatment and strategies). Part II - Living with Sensational Kids is our opportunity to read about "a day in the life of" children with a Sensory Processing Disorder. In this section, Lucy introduces 5 case studies (typically developing child and four young children who each have a different Sensory Processing Disorder -- over-responsive, under-responsive, sensory-seeking, and dyspraxia). The section continues with these same children at an older age. Part III goes beyond the basics and includes the science of SPD, combination disorders, causes and prevalence, intervention methods and treatment effectiveness, and a personal message to parents.
This book could have been called "Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Sensory Processing Disorder but were Afraid to Ask." Not only is it informative, but it's very easy to read. I highly recommend the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2018Boy, I needed this book! My 2 year old daughter was struggling and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Someone suggested I take her to OT and the OT suggested this book. I definitely saw my daughter in this book. It does get technical in sections but I appreciated it and I don’t think it was over the top. I also appreciate that many examples in the book were extreme cases and I could extrapolate what that might look like in a less severe form. We live in a small town and it’s hard to find resources for her. A lot of people say they understand this disorder but that’s just simply not the case. After reading the book it helped me be a better advocate for my daughter and I felt like I had permission to take her as she is rather than conform to how someone else thought she should behave.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2012When your child is diagnosed with SPD, it unearths a chasm of ignorance, helplessness, and haplessness within you. I thought my mind was going to explode just trying to understand it. I read The Out of Sync Child first, because it was the first thing mentioned by the team of therapists who repeatedly told me how critical "intense OT" would be for my son's development. I didn't even understand what OT was. So The Out of Sync Child began to answer some of my questions, but I found myself reaching information overload frequently while I read. Then someone recommended this book, and I just found it so much easier to read and to understand. Now I can throw jargon around with the best of them. And I'm an armchair SPD diagnostician, always spotting the kiddo at the playground that could use some "sensory strategies". The book helped me understand some of my own quirks and the quirks I've noticed in others, which, in turn has helped me be a little more empathic in my daily interactions. It's a keeper.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2017This book is for teachers, parents, grandparents and those who are in contact with children. It helped me to understand sensory issues and better deal with a variety of children. The book clarifies sensory processing issues, symptoms and warning signs of under-responsive, over-responsive or sensory seeking children, The differences and similarities to ADHD and other disorders. In a time when parents and young children are most vulnerable, this book provides tools for recognizing and improving their future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made my child make sense
Anyone who's wondering if their child has SPD or is in the process of trying to determine what works best NEEDS this book. It is written so clearly and for so many different groups. It has ideas for social, academic, and at home. It describes all the different types of SPD really well and I had many "AHA" moments while reading. Have passed this title around to many people already!

5.0 out of 5 stars For those struggling with behaviour that is not quite autism or ADHD, this book might hold some answers
My son is going through assessment for a Sensory disorder, and this book helped me understand what it is, and what behaviour this relates to. This book is clearly set out and explains everything in laymans terms, giving diagrams and check lists to help you identify if your child falls into any of the different sensory disorder possiblities. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs clarity on these ideas, which are new - but are thankfully moving away from labelling every child with ADHD or Autism.
