As for clarity, the monitor is crisp. The only thing I noticed that wasn't as clear was a small logo in one of the apps I use for work. It's maybe like 15x15 pixels, so not a big deal that the lines are not as sharp. It's also not the best logo image anyways.
For gaming, this monitor does great. I have not played a dark game yet, but when hearing about ghosting, I doubt there really is any. Rocket League looks amazing and so does Ultimate Chicken Horse. They say fast action games with dark backgrounds you'll notice it, but again I highly doubt it. And if it is there, it must be so transparent that the only way to find it is through a magnifying glass. Don't let those reviews deter you from this monitor.
My only main gripes about this monitor are the buttons. Why the heck would you put them on the back? Totally not user friendly. Put them on the bottom where they are reachable. The macbook occasionally will not wake the monitor from sleep, so I need to power cycle the monitor or unplug and replug from mackbook. My windows machine has absolutely no problem, so it must be the macbook.
Anyhow, out of the box, the settings are picture perfect. Still and moving images look great. I have not played with any of the menus and don't think I'll ever need to. No idea what options are available and probably never will.
Lastly, I use both display ports to offer the best picture. I tried an HDMI cable, but macbook would only show 1080p. Could have just been a bad cable though.
I will be sure to update this review if I find any cons over the life of this monitor. But as of right now, I've had it for 1 week.
Limited gaming but I see very little lag / anomalies and honestly for the price-to-value ratio...
Will be buying another for upcoming RTX 4080 Super build. A very good monitor for most.
One of the standout features is ASUS's Extreme Low Motion Blur (ELMB) technology, which achieves a remarkable 1ms response time (MPRT). Combined with Adaptive-sync and FreeSync Premium technology, this monitor eliminates ghosting and tearing, ensuring razor-sharp visuals and seamless gameplay. The inclusion of FreeSync Premium further enhances the experience by eliminating screen tearing and choppy frame rates. Shadow Boost technology adds another layer to the visual brilliance, enhancing image details in dark areas without over-exposing brighter scenes. The monitor's flexible connectivity options, including HDMI (V2.0) and D-Sub, ensure compatibility with a range of devices. Whether you're into competitive gaming or immersive single-player experiences, the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B stands as a testament to ASUS's commitment to delivering top-tier gaming monitors with cutting-edge technology.
Top reviews from other countries
Pros:
- consistent color and brightness produced across the display with solid viewing angles
- Flat panel, not curved (better durability)
- Gsync (Using Display Port) and Freesync Premium
- Great response time, virtually no detectable motion blur with the naked eye
- joystick menu control
- HDR10 capable
Cons:
- small amount of light bleed at top right (see image with red circle), only noticeable in dark room when that area of screen is dark
- If you enable HDR10 in windows, many of the monitors menu options will be inaccessible.
- Weak Contrast Ratio, typical of most IPS displays.
Summary:
The big selling points of this display for me come down to this being a flat panel with great response time and great color reproduction. I bought this monitor to use for gaming, watching movies and for work, and it does all three quite well. I prefer flat over curved as a curved display can break with just a small bump on the wrong spot (speaking from experience).
This model is from 2021, which explains the 100hz refresh rate as opposed to more recent 144/165hz offerings on the market. I personally don't notice much of a difference past 80 or 90hz while gaming on a high refresh display, so I wasn't looking for anything above 100hz this time.
If you have the money to burn, definitely consider an OLED panel instead of this, as the contrast ratio on OLED is literally infinite while this display is rated by Asus at 1000:1. 1000:1 is considered bottom of the barrel, albeit CR is only measuring grey-to-grey and not the color reproduction or clarity. This display produces nice sharp colors without any bleed or blur. The only thing better that I've seen is OLED.
The HDR10 offering on the display is a nice-to-have, but its a niche feature. Windows 11 has an auto-HDR feature that will apply HDR to non-HDR content, but it can look washed out due to IPS having weak blacks. Again, go with OLED if you're looking for great HDR.
The light bleed at the top right corner is barely noticeable, and it's nothing new for IPS displays, but it's there. I had a high end Samsung 16:9 1440p display a few years back that had much worse light bleed, so this display isn't bad by comparison.
All in all, for the price this display is fine and I would recommend for those using for a wide variety of tasks. Windows 11 has great snapping for having side-by-side windows open, so that's one thing it does better than 10 (and only that one thing). However, once OLED really takes over and prices come down further, this display will end up in the bargain bin. The one strength this display has over OLED is the lack of burn-in risk, which is a critical feature if you are using this for work.
Is this the best 34" 3440x1440 IPS display on the market? probably not. But it's exactly what I was looking for.
