About this item

  • SMART RELAY FOR ON/OFF CONTROL: Install this relay to add Z-Wave to the existing wall switch and keep your favorite switch style and color. The relay output is dry contact for your unique applications outside of lighting but note the input (switch) requires 120 V which makes it perfect for 120 V signal monitoring on sump pumps or motion lights. For a dry contact input device, look up ZEN16.
  • 3-WAY COMPATIBLE: Unlike many other smart relays, you can use this device to automate 3-way set-ups as well. Even if you don't have neutral available at any of the switch boxes, you can always install this relay at the light fixture where you'll have access to power and neutral. Always follow the wiring diagrams carefully and make any programming changes if needed when installing this relay.
  • EASY INSTALLATION: Pigtail wires for convenient connections. Connect to mechanical on/off or momentary switches only (NO dimmers or electronic / smart switches). The relay is small enough to fit in the most crowded box, just 1.5" x 1.4" and 0.7" deep. NEUTRAL WIRE REQUIRED (check before buying). The device is ETL certified and conforms with North American safety standards.
  • SMART BULB MODE AND MORE: Bring back the switch function to your old switches even when using smart bulbs. The smart bulb mode allows you to control smart bulbs via Z-Wave without cutting power to them when off. Enjoy the new 700 series Z-Wave with powerful features like Z-Wave Long Range, SmartStart, and S2 authenticated security. Your hub or home automation softwarre needs to support this functionality as well.
  • HUB COMPATIBILITY: This is an advanced Z-Wave device and it requires an updated Z-Wave hub to display correctly. All Zooz devices work best with the Z-Box Hub. It was tested to work well with Hubitat, Home Assistant (Z-Wave JS), HomeSeer and is compatible with SmartThings. This product is backed by US based support from Zooz, 7 days a week and a 5-year warranty once registered.

      Works perfectly!
I was able to use these to control some high bay UFO lights through HomeAssistant. My lights are 1-10v dimming which had me concerned at first but these devices have a built in relay to be able to turn them off completely. Pairing was easy and I also installed some Zooz momentary switches to have physical control over them outside of HomeAssistant.

I use this relay in Hubitat along with an advanced driver available to operate my overhead garage door opener. This relay seems to work really well. I replaced a cheaper relay that failed. Bought another cheap relay that came shorted out of the box. Just bit the bullet and got this one. It seems very robust so far. It was easy to pair. Easy to fire and the size is ok for packing into a switch box. Big tip is to do a full reset before trying to pair the first time. It seems like 50% of them pair immediately and the rest need to be reset first and then pair right away. Overall these are my go to for standard light switching.

I'm using these with smartthings and with the new local mode they work well with external sensor automation drive. I'm using several with contact sensors to have automatic pantry and closet lights that come on when the door opens.

Just put in two, taking care of four switches. Much cheaper than using, as had been my habit, individual GE/Jasco z-wave switches.

If you have had occasion to replace a kaput light switch, you have what is required to install these. Just a few more connections. Wiring diagram is very clear.

Pro tip: critical to know the load and line terminals on the old switches. So, turn off power to the switches, pull then out so connections are accessible. Then, power on and use a VOM set to test AC. Touch one lead to ground and, sequentially, the other to the two poles of a switch. Line will show 120V, load will show zero. Repeat for other switch as installation, at least in my house, can be inconsistent. Don’t forget to power down at the relay box before proceeding.

Paired to a Hubitat C-8 Pro. I used the inclusion button on the device to pair. Have to push 3x rapidly. If lights change, then did not push rapidly enough.

I recently changed all my lights to ZWave to reduce the WiFi pollution in my home. I needed a ZWave module to use as a trigger for an automation when my Vista20P alarm is tripped. This is not a direct interface but I was able to use a small relay module between the alarm and the zwave module. It works great and has been very reliable. Now when my alarm system is tripped all my lights are turned ON.

Instead of having a terminal block with screws, the Zooz modules have short wire pigtails that you must solder to. This is a little unhandled but not a big deal if you have the tools and skill set.

Update: After only a few months of service the switch input has failed. It’s still connected and controllable by SmartThings or by the button on the module but nothing happens when the external switch (relay) is closed. I’ve checked it thoroughly and the failure is internal to the Zooz module. This may be indicative of a deficiency in the module design but for now I’m going to attribute it to infant mortality and buy another one. I’ll update again if I have another failure.

Update: The new unit stopped working. I noticed it on 3-19-2023. I did some testing and found that the module was connected to the hub and could be controlled by the SmartThings app and by the button but not by the external switch input. I was about to remove the module and install a new one when I remembered that I had a quick power failure recently. With this in mind I cycled the utility power to that circuit and that restored normal operation. It’s good that I didn’t have to remove the module and wire in a new one but troubling that a utility brownout can cause the external switch input to become unusable. Now if I want this function to be reliable when I’m away from home, I’ll have to create a way to cycle utility power to this circuit remotely. Good to know the answer but…

I needed to find the right device driver, but was quickly up and running. Tested Smoke and Carbon Monoxide, both reporting quickly and accurately. This is a reasonably priced and easy enough to installed method of making your hardwired smoke detectors smart!

My main worry will be reliability and understanding if/when the sensor has an issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unacceptable delay when using physical switch (resolved)
Reviewed in Canada on October 26, 2023
      Style: ZEN52 Double RelayVerified Purchase
Edit: FIRMWARE UPDATE. There is a firmware update which resolves the issue and now it is perfect and I love it, updated to 5 stars but I'll leave this review up just in case someone else runs into the same thing

      Original review:
This relay is ok - it works, but when using the physical switch there is a jarring delay between when you hit the switch and when the light turns on - like a full second...when controlling the relay via zwave it is instant though. When I bought this relay I just wanted to make my existing switches smarter, not impede/sacrifice normal use for the tech. I know many zwave switches deliberately have a delay to allow for scene control via double clicks or whatever, and often it can be disabled, but that does not seem to be the case here...I can't find any way to disable it.

Also, be aware, all the images seem to very purposely not show you how deep this relay actually is (they show height/width, but not depth) - it was much deeper than I expected, and it was a fair amount of work to get it to fit into even a relatively empty box.

Over-all I'm pretty disappointed tbh, and I will likely be returning it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crazy hard to include with Hubitat, once that was done, it works very well.
Reviewed in Canada on November 30, 2022

Adding this device to my Z-Wave network was crazy hard. Hubitat Hub (latest FW and like 15 feet from the relay) would not detect it. I did factory resets, exclusions multiple times, dozens of inclusions, all of which failled. It finally worked for no apparent reason I can tell. Once installed however, it works very well. The manual relay works very quickly. That doesn't require inclusion so worked well right from the start. Once included in my Z-Wave network, automations are very quick as well, though slightly delayed compared to the manual relay (as you would expect). Assuming I have no more Z-Wave network issues, it will serve very well to automate my stairs light were the neutral wire is at the light and not at the switch.
