Dawn's Gray Light (Smoky Mountain Mist Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

Dawn’s Gray Light is book three in the Smoky Mountain Mist series.

Had Dawn Ratliffe known the hot August morning would begin with such a bang she would have called in sick.
The high school English Literature teacher has family and friends whose lives often border on the intriguing and exciting. Her own life leans more towards the mundane and she prefers it that way.
Mark Randolph initiates a change in her perspective when he bursts into her life, in the literal sense, on the first day of the new school year at Beaumont High. Dawn views the marine as a chance-taker while she prefers to know the outcome before diving into any situation.
After years of avoiding romantic relationships, will she allow Mark to touch her heart? Or will giving her love to a soldier a second time bring recurring nightmares for the single mom; one who feels the needs of her seventeen-year-old daughter should come before a love life.
United States Marine Mark Randolph has been waiting a lifetime to meet the special woman God created just for him. When he encounters Dawn during a local military exercise, his heart tells him he has found his forever mate in this brave Amazon. He soon learns that convincing Dawn she should love him back will be the most difficult mission of his life.
From the foothills of the beautiful Smoky Mountains, to the volatile streets of Yemen and back, Dawn wrestles with her feelings for Mark while he battles to convince her of his love; and that he is the man God intends for her, today and always.

Best-selling, multi-published, multi-genre author Cyn Taylor began her career writing Southern Contemporary Romantic Suspense based in the Smoky Mountains and Appalachian area.

Smoky Mountain Mist is Taylor's first series. Taylor published A Cove Creek Christmas, the first novella in the Smoky Mountain Christmas Magic series as well as Truffles & Kisses, book one in the Smoky Mountain Magic series in 2019. Taylor’s romantic fiction books are charming, clean reads written with humor and happily ever afters.

Taylor released her first children’s book, Theodore the Dancing Christmas Horse, in 2019 written under the pen name of LeNai LaRue. Taylor stepped into the Cozy Mystery genre with Peril at Pelican Pointe released in 2024. In January 2025 Taylor released Dad on the Run, co-written with daughter Christa Brogan. Dad on the Run held the #1 best-seller spot in Religious, Cultural, and Ethnic Humor for five days.

Taylor lives in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. She and husband Brent have carved out their dream home on his family farm atop Copper Ridge and live happily with the many woodland creatures who come round to visit. The couple has two married adult children, nine grandchildren, and a newly acquired grand son-in-love.

The author says she gets some of the best inspiration and ideas for storylines and characters when she accompanies Brent, an accomplished angler, on fly-fishing excursions to the Smokies and local tailwaters. He fishes, she writes, life is good.

Taylor/LaRue’s books are available exclusively on Amazon or from the author.

This was a great final book in the trilogy. I enjoyed each of these books and the connection between the three books, yet new story line in each was wonderful! Great reads!

Very exciting and very well written. This is probably the best of the trilogy. Characters well drawn and realistic.

Dawn’s Gray Light is the third in a series of romance novels by Cyn Taylor. All three novels are set in Knoxville near the Smoky Mountains, and the mountain setting creates a spiritual background for the stories. The female characters in all three books are either related or have a close relationship. The women are strong, family oriented, and Christian. Their view of romance is refreshingly guided by their Christian beliefs. The males in the novels are masculine and protective, sometimes to a level that made me uncomfortable as a reader. Dawn is the heroine of the third novel, and the man she is drawn to is a member of a special forces military unit. Because Dawn lost her husband in a military conflict, she is extremely anxious about falling in love with a man who lives dangerously. Plotting becomes increasingly complex in the three novels. In Dawn’s Gray Light, the climax builds through a series of crises—a forest fire, a Christian mission to Yemen that leads to a kidnapping, and a very strange unwanted marriage offer. Even though the obstacles are enormous, the conclusion is all you could ask for in a romance.
I look forward to reading more of Taylor’s works and seeing her craft continue to grow.

I don't normally read romance, but this book was on the Kindle Owner's Lending Library list and was recommended by a friend. So - I had nothing to lose. I thought I would give it a shot. This is a romance novel, but it's not a typical "Harlequin" kind of book. Romance is at the core, but the story is all about the characters. The lead protagonist, Dawn, is complex and has a believable backstory. She's strong, but not absurdly so. She falls in love, but she's not ridiculously fawning over chiseled jawlines and bulging biceps. She's a good person, but she's not perfect. She's very much human. I actually enjoyed this story, even though I had my doubts going in. It's a solid piece of work. There's a lot here for the general fiction reader, not just someone looking for light, cookie-cutter romance. Add the fact that the story is set in the area where I live and the read is all the more enjoyable. Note to parents : Unlike most books in this genre, Dawn's Gray Light is refreshingly free from even the mildest profanity. There are no explicit adult-oriented scenes and a Christian theme runs through the entire story - although it's not at all forced or preachy. This book would be suitable for pretty much all age groups.

Book three of the Smoky Mountain Mist series is an exciting adventure for the reader! Starting off with a “bang” only describes the very beginning of the book, while “fireworks” describes the brewing relationship our heroine (Dawn) with the brassy military guy who all but forces himself into her life (publicly and privately)! This is a must read…take it to the beach for a pleasurable day of reading!

Cyn Taylor is a wonderful story teller. Her book begins with excitement and danger. Dawn Ratliffe, is a high school teacher, finds herself in the middle of a school shooting. She meets Mark Randolph, a Christian Marine, and a difficult relationship begins. The Christian theme is throughout -- but not one that is overwhelming. It's an easy read.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Smoky Mountain Mist books. The characters feel like family. Each book is so very different, yet still connected. I look forward to more stories from Cyn Taylor.
