The Traditional Bowyer's Bible is a remarkably in-depth analysis of the wooden bow from its construction to its correct use by leading experts in the field. The emphasis is on the history of these weapons and methods for building them from scratch, just as they were made before the advent of firearms. Invaluable information for anyone interested in the age-old lure of archery.

Jim Hamm from an early age was fascinated with the challenge of crafting wooden bows by hand, as had Native Americans and ancient people across the world. After spending forty years making well over a thousand bows, and authoring and co-authoring ten books, he's emerged as one of the pioneers of the modern resurgence of traditional archery.

This series really understands bow performance, materials, and design to a deep level. Wood selection, grain, sourcing, age, humidity, storage, are all explained clearly with good illustrations.

Humor and anecdotes are blended in for spice. A good read.

The authors really only care about straight self bows, so if you're looking for advice about recurves or laminations, or non-American bowmaking, forget it. I guess they do touch on sinew now and then.

This is an awesome book that really gets to the heart of what archery really is. It takes the reader beyond the store-bought, high-tech gadgetry that looks and acts more like a rifle than a bow. The essays within, written by a group of traditional bowyers, explores the deep and profound essence of archery by making and using traditional archery gear at home. It opens up new worlds for archers, over and above just climbing a tree and ambushing a deer with space age equipment. It describes a world where archers can reconnect with archery's historical roots, creating a richer and fuller experience and returning hunting back to the realm of fun and enjoyment from the job-like drudgery where hunters are only concerned about the size of a deer's antlers. In the years that I have been shooting traditionally, I have never met a former traditional archer switching to a compound bow; they have all switched away from the gears and pulleys to using more traditional equipment and have never looked back. I would recommend getting the entire series that covers almost every detailed aspect of making and using traditional archery gear, and also contains some historical information about what our ancestors used. It's a great way to really reconnect with nature without having to shell out thousands of dollars to get started, and a much better use of free time than watching ridiculous people on TV act stupidly.

There are many good books for the amateur bowyer interested in making self bows, but really this is the only place you need to start. This four volume set contains enough great material to take you a long way in making traditional bows and arrows. It's also something of an historical document since over the course of publishing the four volumes the authors were obviously learning more about bow making. The only criticism I can make is that the books aren't organized as a reference. They are a collection of individual articles on different topics in bow making. Also, the first three volumes don't have an index. This means that if you are looking for a particular topic, you have to guess from the table of contents where it is. Small quibble.

I have read the first two volumes in this series and learned enough to successfully build my first hickory flat bow. The contents cover everything you need to know to get started, from wood selection, tillering to bow strings, and finish. Also, if you like history, the history of bows and bow styles are well covered. You will not be disappointed.
