The body is a complex organism that has the ability to heal itself—if only you listen to it and respond with proper nourishment and care. In spite of all the abuse our bodies endure—whether through exposure to environmental toxins, poor nutrition, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, or inactivity—they still usually serve us well for many years before signs of illness may start to appear. Even then, with a little help, they respond and continue to function. It is key to keep our immune systems up and running properly both to facilitate healing and to deal with new threats that develop, like the coronavirus.

The human body is the greatest machine on earth. Nerve signals travel through muscles at speeds as fast as 200 miles per hour. The brain puts out enough electric power to light a 60-watt lightbulb. If your leg muscles moved as fast as your eye muscles, you could walk over fifty miles in one day. According to scientists, bone is among the strongest building materials known to humankind.

Think of your body as being composed of millions of tiny little engines. Some of these engines work in unison; some work independently. All are on call twenty-four hours a day. In order for the engines to work properly, they require specific fuels. If the type of fuel given is the wrong blend, the engine will not perform to its maximum capacity. If the fuel is of a poor grade, the engine may sputter, hesitate, and lose power. If the engine is given no fuel at all, it will stop.
The fuel we give our bodies’ engines comes directly from the things we consume. The foods we eat contain nutrients. These nutrients come in the form of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, water, amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids. It is these nutrients that sustain life by providing us with the basic materials our bodies need to carry on their daily functions.

Individual nutrients differ in form and function, and in the amount needed by the body; however, they are all vital to our health. The actions that involve nutrients take place on microscopic levels, and the specific processes differ greatly. Nutrients are involved in all body processes, from combating infection to repairing tissue to thinking. Although nutrients have different specific functions, their common function is to keep us going.

Research has shown that each part of the body contains high concentrations of certain nutrients. A deficiency of those nutrients will cause the body part to malfunction and eventually break down—and, like dominoes, other body parts will follow. To keep this from happening, we need a proper diet and appropriate nutritional supplements. Brain function, memory, skin elasticity, eyesight, energy, the ratio of lean to fat tissue in the body, and overall health are all indications of how well the body is functioning. With the help of the proper nutrients, exercise, and a balanced diet, we can slow the aging process and greatly improve our chances for a healthier, pain-free—and possibly longer—life.

If we do not give ourselves the proper nutrients, we can impair the body’s normal functions and cause ourselves great harm. Even if we show no signs of illness, we may not necessarily be healthy. It simply may be that we are not yet exhibiting any overt symptoms of illness. One problem most of us have is that we do not get the nutrients we need from our diets because most of the foods we consume are cooked and/or processed. Cooking food at high temperatures and conventional food processing destroy vital nutrients the body needs to function properly. The organic raw foods that supply these elements are largely missing from today’s diet.

The past decade has brought to light much new knowledge about nutrition and its effects on the body, and the role it plays in disease. Phytochemicals, also known as phytonutrients, are one example of the results of this research.

Phytochemicals are compounds present in plants that make the plants biologically active. All fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals. However, since few people eat enough fruits and vegetables to get the optimum amount of phytochemicals from diet alone, supplementation is recommended. Phytochemicals are not nutrients in the classic sense, but they determine a plant’s color, flavor, and ability to resist disease. Researchers have identified literally thousands of phytochemicals and also have developed the technology to extract these chemical compounds and concentrate them into pills, powders, and capsules. These products are included under the term “nutraceuticals.” The FDA uses the term “dietary supplement” to define natural compounds like phytochemicals.

Your body’s nutritional needs are as unique to you as your appearance is. The first essential step toward wellness is to be sure you are getting the correct amounts of the proper nutrients. By understanding the principles of holistic nutrition and knowing what nutrients you need, you can improve the state of your health, ward off disease, and maintain a harmonious balance in the way nature intended. Part One of this book should provide you with a clear understanding of the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, phytochemicals, and other nutrients you need, as well as important information on natural food supplements, herbs, and products that enhance nutrient activity. Eating a healthful diet and supplementing your diet with appropriate nutrients will help to assure that your organs, cells, and tissues get the fuel they need to operate properly. The nutrients suggested in this book promote healing and wellness by allowing the body to heal and reinvigorate itself.

A Wealth of Information
I purchased the paperback version ($23.99) and had the spine removed and it placed in a binder at FEDEX ($21.00). Doing so might seem a bit excessive and expensive, but I really wanted to protect the book and improve its accessible for frequent use. The spiral version offered for purchase seems to be a more condensed version of the book, so I opted not to purchase. The information this book provides is very detailed, providing information on nutrition/diet, supplement regimens (with appropriate dosages), and providing considerations and recommendations for life changes applied to various ailments. I do recommend the purchase of this book.

This is my go to for anything medical that crops up. I keep buying the newer version so I can keep up with any changes. It gives you choices to try when you don’t want to load your body up with pharmaceutical medications. It’s been keeping my system running well when others have been getting sick. Best book I ever purchased!

I have a much earlier edition of this book and the printing was a bit larger and darker. This new edition is very difficult for me to read as the print is very light and tiny--very disappointing since my vision is poor even with glasses. I'm not sure if I will keep it since I probably will not use it as much as I had hoped.

My advice: stick with the 4th edition. The 5th edition might be okay. But the 6th edition is not worth the space on your bookshelf.

The subtitle of this book is "A practical A-to-Z reference to DRUG-FREE remedies using vitamins, minerals, herbs, and food supplements."

WHY is there such extensive reference to drugs and vaccines??

P. 149 Sounds like the pharmaceutical companies have paid to put their content in for both Accutane and Levulan.
P. 275 Promotes, at length, a very controverial vaccine for women who are pregnant or breast feeding
P. 198 Includes reference to Carbamazepine, an antiseizure med, for its off shelf use to treat aggression in Alzheimer's patients.
P. 560 Outdated/incomplete information about hysterectomies.
P. 466 Cites the 3 FDA-approved drugs for fibromyalgia
P. 843 Sounds like an ad for Gardasil.
P. 849 Presents a correlation between low levels of Vitamin D and higher occurrences of Covid-19. It is a very convoluted way of stating the simple and obvious: vitamin D is known (and/or believed) to boost the immune system.

P. 850 Removed content (as compared to the 4th edition) referencing mercury fillings and the impact on a weakened immune system.

P. 429 Cites EPA recommendations for social distancing and cloth face coverings for reducing the risk of you know what. These recommendations are outdated even as they were added to the book. Health officials have change positions from their original recommendations as studies have shown that social distancing measures and cloth face coverings did nothing to slow the spread.

Further, it states " 'The authors' state that it is likely that deficient vitamin D status was associated with increased covid-19 risk." ---- this verbiage BEGS the question 'who--but the authors--are putting in the other information??'

Phyllis A. Balch, CNC, has been held in high regard for decades, specifically because of her earlier editions of this book. There is still a wealth of information in this book.

HOWEVER, either the publisher (Penguin Random House) or the copyright holders (P.A.B. Revocable Trust, Trustee) have someone bending their ear and otherwise unduly influencing what made it into the final draft of this edition.

I have always considered this reference book the PDR equivalent for natural remedies. I have consulted my 4th edition copy for the last 17 years. It has been an invaluable resource. I eagerly awaited the release of the 6th edition of this works for more than a year.

I am sorely disappointed that several conditions have not been updated to keep pace with evolving findings. There are also conditions, like PCOS, that still have not been covered in this latest edition.

Lastly, I concur with others who reviewed to comment on the print quality of the text and pages. Also, previous editions have been published in spiral-bound format. As a heavily used reference book, spiral-bound is a wonderful option. However, the publishers need to return to better paper stock in order for a spiral bound print to last.

My advice: stick with the 4th edition. The 5th edition might be okay. But the 6th edition is not worth the space on your bookshelf.

2.0 out of 5 stars PAPEL FINÍSIMO...COMO DE LIAR TABACO...Y MAL REDACTADO Y ESTRUCTURADO según mi parecer
Reviewed in Spain on April 18, 2023
Lo he devuelto porque EL PAPEL DE IMPRESIÓN ES EL MÁS FINO Y DÉBIL QUE HE VISTO EN MI VIDA... MUCHAS GRACIAS.

I do not understand WHY someone would rate this with 1 star when it only came out TODAY.. When I tried to add my comment, it would not allow it because the book was not released yet. My copy just arrived and OMG, the information is phenomenal! This is a must have in everyone's house. If you ever wanted to know what vitamin/mineral etc. helps with which ailments-this is the Manual! The clinical references and suggested reading alone is priceless. Please do not pay attention to the 1 star rating.. think it was posted here in error. Buy this, you won't be disappointed, you may be over-whelmed, but definitely not disappointed!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Prescription for Nutritional Healing, Sixth Edition: A Practical A-to-Z Reference
Reviewed in Canada on April 6, 2023
I love these valuable editions, and have bought every one, through the years, from my local health food stores. There have been a few suggestions in the books that I've disagreed with, taking or eating, for some of the ailments I've had over decades, however, I've found these to be the best informational health books we could ever own. I didn't know there's a new edition, and I've never thought about a new update to my last book, so I was thrilled to see this pop up for preorder last fall, when I was looking at Pamela Anderson's latest book, LOL; the universe works in such mysterious ways! Thank you.
