- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2016I am using this Primer to teach my four year old to read and write in conjunction with the methodology of The Writing Road to Reading (the Spalding method). We both enjoy working through this book! I love that it progresses with enough repetition of previously learned words, interspersed with more newly learned words, and adding a few challenging spellings with each lesson. And my daughter beams with confidence at the end of each lesson because she's mastered some previously learned words and persevered through the newer challenging words as well as new concepts like commas. We usually celebrate with a sticker and lots of high fives!
Overall, I'm really enjoying the simplicity and timelessness of this Primer. I'm looking forward to working all the way through this "challenge" book, as we call it, and then to the others in this series! It's such a great tool for teaching the basics of writing and reading.
Just as an idea, this is how our daily lessons go...
I start by reading the word/sentence (the book starts with isolated words then builds to sentences) to my daughter so that she can identify the phonograms (sounds) she hears and write them down. After she sounds out and writes the word, I have her read her written word, and we do this until she finishes the sentence. Then she reads her sentence. We continue this way until she finishes the set of sentences (right now at Lesson 8 we're at five sentences). She then gets to read the same sentences from the Primer and look at the picture. I usually try to have her read through the set three times. By the third time through, her reading fluency improves so that she hesitates less and uses proper inflections for the various sentence types - statement, question, and exclamation, and even pauses for commas! Hooray!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2024I was introduced to McGuffey’s through Sherry Hayes of Mom Delights on You Tube. (We use her workbooks with these.)
These books were also in my Robinson Curriculum book list to download but we prefer the hands on aspect.
It’s a beautiful book and has quick stories that engage both my 5 year old and 9 year old.
My 9 year old actually started over using this and Reading Reflex last year because he had me tricked on his reading ability due to the use of picture books. He was able to guess any sentence perfectly based on the pictures and beginning sounds of each word.
McGuffey’s books have cute pictures but they don’t naturally tell what is happening.
Between these books, Reading Reflex, Mrs. Hayes writing journals, and Spelling You See my boys are making amazing progress. I swear, besides staying disciplined, the hardest part of homeschooling is finding what curriculum works for your individual child.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2013I bought this for my 5 year old so we could practice on reading before he starts Kindergarten. This book was perfect. At the beginning it had pictures with the word beside them, it is great because some of the pictures you can't guess what they are and you have to really sound them out. Then it goes to short stories where it has about 5 sentences of very small words, very easy for children trying to learn to read. We haven't made it very far in the book as we just bought it recently, but as you go farther into the book the pictures have sentences beside them not just one word. Again this is the perfect book for trying to teach a child to read, highly recommend to everyone.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2019The lessons progress very quickly in this primer. It begins with CVC words and a small mix of sight words. It quickly progresses on with words that rhyme with the first few lessons CVC words and more sentences. A few lessons later, and it moves onto entire passages.
Unless you feel confident designing your own phonics and grammar lessons, I think this is best used as a supplement to a more comprehensive reading program.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2014My daughter with Down syndrome and autism finally found a reading resource she likes that doesn't distract her as much on each page. The black and white is great and she is making steady progress. Nothing seems too racist or gender horrible yet so I hope that we don't find anything like that (some older books one does at times but so far so good). Wish I would have found these earlier.

5.0 out of 5 stars 19
Ode on a Grecian Urn を読まされて始めて知った。文化の違いを感じる。同じシリーズのMcGuffery’s Eclectic Primer の復刻版と合わせて読むとよいだろう。

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a strong phonics approach.
While I love the nostalgia of these books, the primer in particular does not have a strong phonics base. Might be difficult for children who need the stronger phonics approach. There are also words which are all in capitals, which I am not a fan of in beginning readers.
