The Enneagram is a way of examining human behavior, unmatched in its ability to find space for both uniqueness and belonging. The nine Enneagram Types are like holding up mirrors that help us see why we do what we do. When we know our Type, we can begin to understand the motivations and fears that drive our everyday thoughts and decisions. These Types can be sorted into Triad groupings in four distinct ways, giving every Type a Triad connection point to each of the other Types.

Perhaps the most well-known and foundational Triad grouping of Enneagram Types is the Intelligence Centers: the head, heart, and gut. All three Intelligence Center Triads are important, yet many of us have only experienced Enneagram content through our head in an information-based approach. This approach is instructional, but also limited. If we aren’t careful, reading too many Enneagram Type descriptions can become more like boxes of limitation than pathways of growth.

Author Stephanie Spencer has coached many clients over the years in understanding their Enneagram Types. She has observed how imagery helps take down defense mechanisms and transform how people see the Enneagram, themselves, and each other.

Just like she does with her clients, Spencer’s book will assist you in getting out of the box and into the wild using powerful natural imagery. She begins with the foundational Triad of the Intelligence Centers, in which the gut center is represented as earth, the heart center as water, and the head center as air. Continuing into Types, 8s are represented as rock, 9s as soil, 1s as clay, 2s as rivers, 3s as waves, 4s as icebergs, 5s as wind, 6s as clouds, and 7s as rainbows. This imagery deepens and expands with the layers of three other Triads and the Types within them.

Spencer has seen the power of rooting in imagery and is confident this book will provide you with a way to see both yourself and others with more clarity and compassion.

Allow this book to open you up to new possibilities.

If you do not already know your Enneagram Type, as you read, create space for reflection on these images.

Allow them to be a discernment tool.

  • What Type speaks to you?
  • Which priorities resonate with you?
  • What kinds of struggles have you experienced?
  • What kinds of strengths have you demonstrated?
  • Which characteristics feel most like you?

If you do know your Enneagram Type, meditate on the images for your Type and its Triads.

  • What is beautiful about your Type that you haven’t noticed before?
  • How does it feel to be symbolically connected to other Types in your Triads?
  • Which image speaks to you the most? Why?

Whether you do or do not know your Type, be curious about all the images and Types.

  • Is there something you have in common with other Types that you haven’t noticed before?
  • If you tend to struggle with certain Types (as we all do!), is there something in the Triads or imagery that brings a new level of compassion?

Allow the images in this book to reside in your imagination as you walk about your daily life.

Embody them where you live as you spend time in the nature around you.

  • Is there an image you can encounter on a regular basis that speaks to you about your Type?
  • How can you get out of the box and into the wild where you live?

Open your heart. Let the beauty of the earth speak and hear what it has to say.

I love enneagram resources, but sometimes they leave you feeling left out - or as if you just can’t relate with what an author describes as your type based on words they use or more black and white thinking. This book doesn’t have any of that! Using imagery, it leaves so much for the reader to interpret for themselves and allows for more cultural differences since nature seems to be similar across the world. It truly is a book that allows you to get out of typical enneagram boxes and see yourself more connected to nature, each other, and just more deeply connected to yourself. I couldn’t recommend more! (It also is just beautiful to page through and is easy for “new to enneagram” folks to enjoy)

Stephanie is an excellent Enneagram guide and is passionate about helping people explore and expand what they know about the Enneagram and themselves. Her unique perspectives help open us up - helping the reader feel seen while also inviting them to discover new insights. This is not a coffee table book, although it's beautiful enough to be on, but a book that you will want to read again and again as you continue on the journey to discovering more about the Enneagram.

Enneagram coach Stephanie Spencer brings her passion for engaging with nature into her teachings of the Enneagram. This resource is accessible to those new to the Enneagram as well as a way to enliven studies of the seasoned Enneagram professional. She invites us to pay attention and to be in conversation with nature as we go within to understand our motivations, our struggles, how we relate to others (both human and non-human) and ultimately how we can see ourselves anew. This creative book is a must for your Enneagram library! Plus, the photography and images are breath-taking and thought-provoking making it such a beautiful treasure to return to again and again.

Stephanie is clearly not the typical “enneagram author”.
She adds depth as she describes each type, and triads through art and nature!
