- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021This book was able to keep my attention as very few can. It covers the important points in the history of politics in such a way that I didn’t even realize I was being educated. But I was. Scaros relates these points to our current political climate. More importantly, much needed advice was given in a non-judging, unbiased approach. We are reassured that we can get through this again, but with much less anxiety if we open our minds to the opposites sides. This book should be read by all curious eager-to-learn pre-teens, rebellious youth, know-it-all adults, older adults who may have lost hope for our country, and senior citizens who try to pretend that they just don’t give a hoot anymore. This book will be kept on my shelf for future reference and reminders. That is one thing I know I'm right about.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2024I found this book to be a great resource to lean on while discussing politics with my young adult aged children and their friends. I have been challenged to navigate the mine field of, what I believed to be, good common sense. This book was, and is, a welcomed reminder that opposing opinions are an established tradition within our history and the ability to discuss them an honor best prepared for. This book provides great perspectives to keep close during healthy and spirited debates among the most opposing of participants. The ability to discuss politics without arguing is a slowly acquired skill. I’m thankful to now be better prepared.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2021Had hoped to have more than a semi-autobiography which is mostly what this book is. You can skip most of the first several chapters and go to the "TakeAways" chapter. Not really worth the price.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2021This is a great read and sorely needed after the whirlwind that was the 2020 election. Social media and the internet in general have given more people voices, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they know how to discuss issues without getting emotional and upset or reactive and nasty. The author(s) calmly argue that different political viewpoints should not only be expected, they are necessary for the survival of our democracy, and lay out some great suggestions for how to talk to people with opposing views. The book also points out that poisonous discourse about politics is nothing new, and gives some great, little known examples from US History. I personally feel that the book goes too easy on the tempestuous former President, but echoing the mantra of the book, “I could be wrong”.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2021Great book on the origins of political discourse, where we are now and how to defuse the hositilties going forward. It's a book everyone should read in order to bring civility back to political discussion. As the author pointed out....The United States is really "50 mini countries" and everyone won't have the same perspective due to the various environments that are contained in this country. Excellent read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2021jeffgrammas@yahoo.com I loved the fact that this book is so current. The examples really hit home because some of them are so recent. Very well written and informative. I'll definitely be putting some of the author's suggestions to good use!!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2021This is a must read for anyone who wants to simply get back to "agreeing to disagree." When did we lose the art of respectful, considerate, and compassionate conversation? I am not a person who loves to talk about politics. But it has been impossible to avoid over the past 4+ years! I'm sorry that we are at the point in our country/world where an author has to teach us how to have a friendly conversation with friends and loved ones. But, that is exactly where we are. Let's be better! This book will definitely help. It's time to reconnect with friends and family members.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2021I enjoyed reading this quite a bit, it does a great job of putting ideas, talking points, or conversation starters out there but not trying to persuade the reader. Also some historical background into politics which I found interesting.
