As a pastor who has read, preached, and taught the 23rd psalm many times, this study adds a very unique perspective on this most beloved biblical passage. Psalm 23 is the most well known scripture in America, but in reading this work, one will develop new understandings and appreciation through learning ancient Palestinian sheep herding practices and their application to understanding this psalm and the Christian faith. Many of our North American assumptions we bring to the text will be replaced by this emphasis on what the writer of the text intended to communicate. Ashley Wilkerson expands on the implications for faith through references to other biblical texts. Readers will be asked to examine their own doubts and areas for further spiritual growth.

This is a must read for all believers. I found myself needing to pause periodically to reflect and listen to the voice of God; to give glory to my Shepherd. I finished the book weeks ago, but it is still echoing through my heart and mind.

Anyone who was raised even on the outskirts of Christianity has heard Psalm 23. Those of us who have spent any time in the church have more than likely heard its meaning preached or taught many times. Yet like the paperweight described in the introduction, new facets of the Psalm are exposed which bring an increased richness to it. I am amazed at how such a familiar subject has been approached in a way that made it seem brand-new.

This study will both broaden and deepen your view of the Lord and how far He is willing to go for us. If you are familiar with Psalm 23 you probably have turned to it in times when comfort and safety was needed in your life. Hang on for the ride as you dive into this amazing study and learn the historical meanings and regional applications asserted by the psalmist. Discover, as I did, another wonderful level of love from the Father.
