Purchase options and add-ons

Austrian novelist and essayist Torberg (1908-79) recalled the coffeehouse scene in Vienna during his youth in the 1975 Tante Jolesch, and augmented it with a second volume in 1987. The English translation follows the format of the first, adding interesting anecdotes from the second. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Top reviews from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2018
This book affords a unique look into a side of Jewish history often overlooked from the turn of the century until the onset of the Second World War" that of assimilated Jews. Torberg manages, through his humorous, and at times melancholy anecdotes to elucidate what life was like within Jewish coffeehouse society, athletics, famous literati, and more from the turn of the century until the Anschluß. It also chronicles what happens as this community is forced into Exile (for those who made it at all). The translation is very well done, as it pays attention to the nuance of the Yiddish, Wienerish, and other dialects.

Mr. P. A. Whitchelo
1.0 out of 5 stars Outrageous abridged, selective "translation" of this classic, seminal work
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 4, 2022
The translator, Maria Poglitsch Bauer, has for some reason chosen only to translate selective portions of the original work - whole pages of Torberg's original German writing have been replaced with the symbol [...]. Nowhere within the translated book, or on the front or back cover, or in the book description on Amazon is it revealed or acknowledged that this farcical "translation" is the translator's own selective, abridged version of the original. An unspeakable crime of which Friedrich Torberg would be utterly bemused. The translator and publisher should be utterly ashamed of deceiving readers into purchasing this travesty.
