Encouragement to Treasure the Bible and Grow in Your Desire for God’s Life-Giving Word

In our never-satisfied world, our souls hunger for more, and it’s tempting to reach for the wrong “food” to satisfy our needs. Thankfully, Jesus is the bread of life who offers us himself through the life-giving and sustainable feast of Scripture (John 6:35). But how often do we sit at Christ’s table, truly hungry for his word?

Help for the Hungry Soul offers 8 encouragements to spur an appetite for God’s word. Through searching questions, practical ideas, and moving testimonies, author Kristen Wetherell will help readers to reflect on their journey with their Bible and uncover how it is possible to treasure God’s word. For those feeling discouraged or guilty about a waning desire for Scripture, Wetherell will spark excitement in their spiritual life―ultimately encouraging them to put God and his word at the center of it all.

  • Encourages Readers to Love God’s Word: Teaches why readers should treasure the Bible to spark enthusiasm for reading Scripture
  • Interactive Elements: This practical book provides reflection questions, habit trackers, and scriptural interaction to spur appetite for the word
  • Contains Anecdotal Stories: Each chapter ends with an individual’s unique testimony related to their personal journey with the Bible

Editorial Reviews

Review

“I pray almost every day that the Lord would create in me a greater hunger for his word and his ways. But for that to happen, my appetites must be reoriented. In Help for the Hungry Soul, Kristen Wetherell reveals our deepest hunger pains as she points us to the only source of true satisfaction. So pick up this book, and you will taste and see that the Lord is good.”
Courtney Doctor, Director of Women’s Initiatives, The Gospel Coalition; Bible teacher; author, From Garden to Glory; coauthor, Behold and Believe

Help for the Hungry Soul serves as an encouragement to all of us, regardless of the season we are in, that God himself delights in arousing, sustaining, and satisfying our spiritual hungers by giving us the gift of his word and his presence. These short, content-rich chapters will encourage you afresh that God delights in filling the hungry with good things (Ps. 107).”
Amy Gannett, Founder and Creator, Tiny Theologians; Writer and Bible teacher, The Bible Study Schoolhouse; author, Fix Your Eyes

“In Help for the Hungry Soul, Kristen Wetherell has found a way to champion the habit of Bible reading without the frequent side effects of guilt or legalism. She invites us to dig deeper into God’s precious word while also freeing us from the obligatory ‘quiet time.’ This book is a hope-filled encouragement to those who long for more of God and yet constantly feel unable to find the time or energy to follow through.”
Kelly Needham, wife; mom of five; author, Friendish and Purposefooled

“This book is more than a good read. It’s a life-changer that will increase your hunger for God’s word. Honest, personal stories from real people will enable you to identify with their struggles to grow in his word. Kristen Wetherell’s insights increase my commitment to pray for each of my twenty-one grandchildren to fall in love with the word of God (Ps. 119:105).”
Susan Alexander Yates, speaker; blogger, SusanAlexanderYates.com; author, Risky Faith and One Devotional

“Reading Help for the Hungry Soul will be a ministry of grace to you. Not only will this book stir your appetite for the deep things of God, but it will also give you a satisfying and nourishing meal along the way.”
Jared C. Wilson, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Ministry and Author in Residence, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, The Imperfect Disciple and Love Me Anyway

“At last! A book that is full of encouragement in an area where many Christians feel only defeat. Help for the Hungry Soul will stir your heart to feed on God’s word. It will entice you with the why and equip you with the how.”
Colin Smith, Senior Pastor, The Orchard, Arlington Heights, Illinois; Founder and Bible Teacher, Open the Bible

“‘Gather a day’s portion.’ That’s a truth I love to rehearse in the morning as I open up the Bible and ask for God’s help. It’s a reminder I don’t need to do too much in morning devotions―and I need to make sure to do the main thing. And it’s a feeding image―a picture of hunger and eating and satisfaction. Of the many good ways we can approach reading, studying, and meditating on God’s word, the feeding image is as important―and practically helpful―as any. That’s why I love the vision of this book: To grow your soul’s appetite for God through his word. Kristen Wetherell is both a skilled and reliable guide. So take up and read yourself into greater hunger and feed afresh on the only one who truly satisfies.”
David Mathis, Senior Teacher and Executive Editor, Desiring God; Pastor, Cities Church, Saint Paul, Minnesota; author, Habits of Grace

Such an encouraging read!

Such an encouraging read!
“From the garden throughout the generations, God's word has told us the tale of the human soul: our wholehearted hunger for the Creator, our terrible plunge into starvation, and our countless attempts to fix and fill ourselves with anything but true bread. We are in the wilderness, indeed.“But here's the good news: God's word is for the wilderness, for those not yet home.”WHEW, I needed this book! It lived up to its title and subtitle—after closing it for the last time, I left feeling extremely encouraged! In Help for the Hungry Soul, Kristen Wetherall helps the reader understand why we may not have an an appetite for God’s Word, why we need to seek the Lord to increase it, and why we need to continually come to the text—even when we don’t want to.Throughout the book, she give eight encouragements to help us grow our hunger for the Word! One thing I loved about this book is how it brought renewed interest and wonder to the Word. Because it’s so easily accessible and seemingly familiar, we can come to it with less enthusiasm. Kristen reminds us of the privilege we have to be able to open God’s Word daily and read His words to us.I also loved that she dealt with the guilt we often feel about not reading the Word like we believe we should. She called this out as false (in most cases) and invited us to consider other “creative (and biblical!) ways of nourishing our souls with [Scripture].”This was a really refreshing and timely read for me! I absolutely loved it and encourage y’all to give it a read—especially if you need to be encouraged in your Bible reading!

Help for the Hungry Soul is easy to read, and has some practical advice and encouragement for helping believers engage more confidently with Scripture.

I felt some chapters were stronger than others. There is a chapter on taking a posture of pleading desperation when approaching the Word, and that doesn’t sit right with me for those who are already believers. While there is a place for spiritual desperation, I think a better (and very biblical) posture is to approach the Lord in gratitude, which is a form of humility that also exalts the Lord in worship. Pleading, to me, seems self centered—focusing on what we don’t have, instead of on the Lord Himself.

I did really enjoy the chapter on Pietism, and how to embrace corporate times of reading and worshipping through Scripture. I also especially liked the acronym, TASTE, as a helpful process by which to mediate on Scripture. And I really appreciated the interactive questions and personal testimonies at the end of each chapter, although I think it could have gone deeper with journaling responses for those who are just getting started with studying the Bible.

In Help for the Hungry Soul, Kristen Wetherell points the soul-starved to the Bread of Life. With only one in six adults reading the Bible most days of the week, she acknowledges the deeply rooted hunger in our culture and resists pat answers and simple formulas. When our greatest need is to hear from God, but we’ve spent our whole lives drowning out the hunger pangs with food substitutes, it takes time to revive and recognize our appetite for God.

Wetherell puts her finger on the most common distractions believers face and argues that a desire for spiritual things in the heart of a dull and discouraged human is actually a bona fide miracle. Sample prayers from scripture prime the pump, giving words for the asking.

The book provides first-person testimonies from people who have learned to dig into the life-giving nourishment God provides, step-by-step help for getting started, and a list of resources on the nature and trustworthiness of the Bible and how to study. Devoting one chapter to each form of encouragement, Kristin Wetherell graciously walks her readers through eight appetite-stirring helps for the hungry soul.

Kristen Wetherell's Help for the Hungry Soul is a must-read for every Christian. The ever-growing list of commitments, responsibilities, distractions, and often lackadaisical attitude about what we know is important but ignore due to exhaustion harms both our physical and spiritual well-being. This leads us to pursue things in life that do not truly satisfy us. Our souls hunger for one thing, which is feasting on God's Word, spending daily time with our Lord, and listening to what He has to say to us. We find excuses to neglect spending time with God in our craziness. We are taken on a wonderful journey through how we can ignite our hunger and desire for God in Help for the Hungry Soul.

A total of eight chaper's are included in this book. They include:

    Know Your Hungry Heart

    Plead for a Holy Hunger

    Don't Miss Jesus

    Remember the Privilege

    Feast with Your Church

    Feed Yourself Creatively

    Trust God's Nourishing Work

    Embrace Your Hunger

Each chapter begins with a topical mini-lesson. There are main topics and subtopics in all chapters. Throughout the chapters, Scripture references are frequently used. There is an activity at the end of every chapter that corresponds to the topic of the chapter. These activities are thought-provoking and definitely take time. Following that, a personal testimony is presented. There are two Bible verses, a quote from a Biblical scholar at the end of this chapter.

I highly recommend Kristen's book. My first reading was just to get a feel for what the book was about. In reading the book through a second time, I plan to highlight, take notes in the book, meditate on God's Word, and work slowly through it. This book would make a wonderful summer devotional. This is a book you should purchase.
