- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2023“Executive Retreats for Busy Business Leaders" by David Achata is an exceptional book that I had the pleasure of experiencing firsthand. As a busy business executive, I was desperately seeking ways to achieve more while working less, and this book delivered beyond my expectations.
From the very first chapter, Achata's expertise and insights captivated me. He eloquently explains the importance of self-care and taking time off from work in order to recharge and increase productivity. His strategies are refreshingly practical.
Achata convincingly argues that immersing oneself in a retreat environment is essential for personal growth and professional development. His detailed descriptions of various retreat options, along with their benefits, is on point. Having personally experienced one of these retreats from Achata, it is exactly as described and even more than could possibly be grasped through reading.
What I appreciated most about this book is the actionable advice provided. Achata not only shares inspiring stories and concepts but also provides practical exercises and tools to apply his teachings in real life. Through these exercises, I was able to identify areas in my life that needed improvement and develop an attainable action plan. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to transform their work-life balance and maximize their productivity.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2023This book is unique. Well-researched, personal, and practical, David can help you out of the madness of modern leadership culture into a well-ordered life that actually reflects your priorities. I do not exaggerate. From the opening salvos, which define retreats as “Regular strategic spaces for yourself, your development, your team, and your family” or “Focus times for anyone with a senior level of responsibility,” to the nitty gritty of self-compassion and culture change, David lays out a road map to life that is both peaceful and immensely valuable.
I’ve spent time with David, and I can attest, he’s the real thing. He has many superpowers, but David’s ability to put complex realities in plain language is truly unique. That ability shines in this book, which quotes astronauts, Russian novelists, psychologists, and business leaders, to name a few, all while staying deeply rooted in practical application.
If Brene Brown wrote a book with Sun Tzu, the result might be a lot like Executive Retreats for Busy Business Leaders. “How are you doing at living?” David asks. Read this book and you’ll learn to do better.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2023I am not an executive of a company. I am a mental health therapist. However, I found this book extremely practical and helpful. Everyone is the "executive" of something—perhaps a family leader, leading in your community, etc. The principles laid out in Achata's book apply to everyone; we all need time and space to recalibrate and remember what's most important. I found the sections regarding mentorship and finding a guide invaluable, bringing fresh inspiration into my imagination regarding who could be a mentor or guide in my life. Read this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2023Excellent and easy to read. Best to take some time to read it and think through how to use the information. Retreat is a challenge from David Achata that all busy business leaders need to take seriously.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2023Highly recommend this book to any leader looking to grow healthier in their personal and professional lives. David does such a great job of speaking to the integrated nature of ourselves and our work. Our personal health is intrinsically linked to our organizational effectiveness and he gives great frameworks, stories, and tools to take steps towards forward!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2023David's advice for leaders to go away on retreat is incredibly valuable, practical, and actionable!
It's so easy to be busy and caught up with all the urgent demands on our time that we neglect the important things... our purpose, our health, our families, our wellbeing. Yes, we've all heard it before and it's so easy to say we should take time away, go on vacation, put all our devices down. But in practicality, it can feel impossible to do.
David's advice in this book is actionable. You don't have to go on a week-long retreat - start with a day (maybe just an hour)! The four types of retreats are relevant and practical: go alone, with a guide, with your team, and with your family. These aren't just vacations -- retreats are different and David explains how they are different and why they matter so much.
I highly recommend this book, but please don't just read it... take action and go on retreat. You won't regret it! And those who work with you and for you will be glad you did as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a game changer... or even better, a life changer
I read this book at a time in my life where I was going through a fair bit of turmoil and was feeling very off-balance, and lost to some degree. This book helped me figure out what I could do to turn things around in both my professional and personal life, and the answer I found is one that I think eludes many leaders today, and that is there is a way to take time away from your desk and have it be useful to you, your team and your organization. In fact, taking that time away, if done with purpose, can actually be a strategy that propels you closer to your end goal, your vision and your purpose. Taking time to be quiet, be still and recharge is exactly what leaders need to do in order to maximize their impact with their colleagues, followers and definitely with their family.
This is a must read for busy business leaders, for leaders in the corporate or non-for-profit world alike, and most definitely for leaders of small humans, because they are watching us and will model what they learn from us. Buy this book and allow it to teach you to recalibrate your life, your time, your purpose. Being busy doesn't need to be a badge of honor.
