Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3–These easy readers are arranged in two-page sections, each with several sentences of large-print, straightforward, if uninspired, text opposite a clear, close-up color photo. Together they describe each stage in the organism's development. While the primary focus is on the animal's life cycle, each title also mentions a few major physical and behavioral characteristics and diet. Additionally, Hummingbird describes some differences among species (e.g., beaks can be curved or straight; plumage color varies). Although clearly written, each title is flawed by oversimplification and the omission of important information. For instance, readers of Cicada may be confused when the text refers to an immature cicada as grown before its final molt and emergence as an adult are described. Hummingbird's description of the bird's size is unclear–it states that it is as small as a bar of soap. All three titles are coy about the mating process, although two do mention male courting behavior (Moth omits even this oblique reference). While the definitive introduction to hummingbirds for younger readers has yet to be published, introductions to the two other insects are available with livelier, more detailed writing, such as John Still's Amazing Butterflies and Moths (DK, 1991) and Ann O. Squire's Cicadas (Children's Press, 2003), although they are on a slightly higher reading level.–Karey Wehner, formerly at San Francisco Public Library
