Fly into director Richard Donner’s Superman once more in Superman ’78! Written by Robert Venditti (Superman: Man of Tomorrow) and drawn by Wilfredo Torres (Batman ’66), Superman ’78 tells a brand-new adventure in the world of the beloved film. A bright, shining day in Metropolis is interrupted by a mysterious drone that crash-lands in the city and starts wreaking havoc. This looks like a job for Superman! But where did the metallic menace come from, what is its purpose, and who is Brainiac? As Metropolis is invaded by this being and its mechanical drones, Superman must make a life-changing sacrifice and leave Earth once and for all. But once aboard Brainiac’s ship, the Man of Steel finds he might not be the last son of Krypton as he believed. This volume collects issues #1-6 of the hit miniseries Superman ’78!

The art and the writing on this comic was magnificent to say the least, and it’s clear that they deeply care about the vintage aesthetic of the Christopher Reeve films. Brainiac was a decent villain, and the stuff regarding Kal-El’s parents was really solid. It’s an amazing and fun piece of art right here!

Thoroughly enjoyed this true sequel to the first two Superman films (III and IV don’t count) - it retains the spirit of the Donner films while leaving its own mark. What makes it so successful compared to the many versions we have seen on TV and film since, is its sincerity. No heady philosophical arguments, no deconstruction of the modern hero - just a fun story where the bad guys are bad and the good guys are good. The artist renditions of the original actors are spot on, and the writing is so good I could hear the voices of Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman in my head as I read it. Can’t recommend this enough.

Reading a comic based on the movie from 1978 was kind of interesting. I do not like this Luthor and never have or Jor El that maybe because I don't like Gene Hackman or Brando.

Ran into this not remembering hearing about it. Really love the feel to the what I wish was Superman 3 movie. I heard they wanted to do a Brainiac story but didn’t get budget enough for it. I feel younger readers might not enjoy this if they did see the movies but I feel it stands well enough. The creative team nailed the dialogue and the artwork was great. I could hear the actors voices in reading it and the John Williams music playing.

The comic is a faithful to Christopher Reeves' Superman the Movie and Superman 2. Definitely same pattern as Richard Donner. You all did a fabulous job.

If your a fan of superman then you'll likely enjoy this. For what's essentially the 5th movie of the Christopher reeves Films. Is this comic replicates the look and feel Of those films But it also tells a good story 1 that might have saved the franchise at the time. As it has what I feel is the essence of the first 2 films and what made people love them.

Great book. Great Christopher Revees continuation from the movies. Looks just like him, that's what made me really enjoy the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tribute to Richard Donner and, Christopher Reeve.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 9, 2023
Superman 78 is the perfect tribute to the Richard Donner Superman movies. The writing is very good and, the plot of the story Introducing Brainiac as the main villain, makes me feel that this is what Superman 3 should have been.

I won't reveal any spoilers, because I don't think anyone who hasn't read this yet would appreciate me doing that. Moving on to the artwork featured in the covers and the panels. Overall it looks very good and, the various artists did a great job of capturing the likeness of the original actors from the films. As I was reading through this book it was hard not to hear the voices of Marlon Brando, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman and, Christopher Reeve in my head.

Like the Batman '89 one, Superman is a very interesting read! I like the surprising cameos by several famous other fictionalised characters. The story is cohesive and the art work is fantastic.

Definitely a must buy for Superman fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good effort in creating the milieu of 1978 Superman film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 24, 2023
What would you get it you took the characters from the 1978 Superman film and gave them a brand new story all while retaining the look of Richard Donner's masterpiece? The answer is this very enjoyable romp. Enjoyed it a lot but I wish this book had lasted for longer as this is a very enjoyable concept.
