Most of the digital multi-meters in this same price category, as the TRMS 4000 were NOT auto ranging or too small to have a reasonable size display. The meters with similar features by Fluke, Extech and Amprobe, to name a few, varied in price from ten to twice as expensive. Since I needed four, all of those meters were immediately ruled out. When the TRMS 4000 meter arrived, a quick physical, hands on inspection, revealed a solid design that was well labeled, with an LCD display that was about the same size as my personal hand held Fluke DMM.
To test the meters, I used a variety of batteries and precision one-percent resistors to compare the performance of each meter, against my Fluke and against each other. In all cases the TRMS 4000 meters within +/- 4 least significant digits in the three and a half digit mode and +/- 2 least significant digits in the three digit mode. Without doing any real statistical analysis and without true NIST traceable standards, I feel comfortable that these meters were precise with an uncertainty that was within 1% +/- 1 digit in the tested ranges, which seems to correlate well with AstroAI’s stated specification. I should note that the results I obtained with precision resistors was well within the stated specifications.
Since these we to be used for Science Olympiad competition, and the general rules prohibit using dangerous voltages, I did not test the AC or higher DC voltage ranges. However seeing the excellent results with low voltage DC and resistance, I would feel comfortable using one of these as troubleshooting tool in a professional capacity on low frequency equipment and appliances. Because TRMS 4000 has a specified input impedance of 10 Meg Ohms, I would not recommend this for use on sensitive instrumentation or high frequency circuits where test input impedances > 100 Meg are recommended and generally required. I would also recommend not using any hand-held multimeter for directly measuring currents in excess of 1 amp even though they may be equipped to do so, external shuts should be used for these types of measurements.
In summary, for the price, this is an excellent choice for the serious hobbyist and student. If I had it to do over, I would still purchase these DMMs.
It's more than capable of bench work and troubleshooting vehicle electrical systems, but for HVAC or heavy use you need something a bit more robust. This is for weekend DIY'rs.
If I'm going to use a meter it must be quick latching. Any meter can provide Volts and Ohms and Amps, but if I'm checking continuity I want instant feedback. This isn't instant but it's very close.
I replaced the leads and actually prefer using this meter over some of my larger and more expensive ones.
Overall I'm very satisfied with the size and performance.
Top reviews from other countries
the meter is 4000 count, auto ranging, "True rms", has backlight, hold, min/max and relative functionality.
DC VOLTS: (400 mV - 600 v). tested accuracy was way within the 0.8% spec for all ranges. more near 0.1% for most middle of the range measurements (very happy with that).
it beeps at you when you go over 600v.
AC VOLTS: (1v - 600v). tested accuracy was also good (usually 0.1% innacuracy) but is only accurate between 10hz - 2khz. outside of that range it becomes unusable. likewise waveforms with a high crest factor struggle. a 1 vrms squarewave at 100hz has an inaccuracy of about 1% whereas a 1Vrms 100hz sinewave's reading exactly matches the 1 Vrms input. (very nice)
FREQUENCY: (1Hz - 40MHz) wonderfully accurate ( im very happy :) ).
works down to like 0.001 Vrms which is impressive and doesn't seem to discriminate between waveforms. super hand little frequency counter.
(I didn't test the duty cycle but it is probably good enough and is nice to have)
Resistance (400 ohms - 45 Mohms )
accuracy is good but not as good as the volts ranges (expect about 0.15% innacuracy nominally (worse in the edges of the ranges and better in the middle of the ranges))
Continuity test: it is latched and a bit slow but ok. a nice pleasant beep is emitted (not defeningly loud)
diode test: goes up to 3.24v and pushes about 1 milliamp through whatever you are probing. good for leds but not HV diodes I'd say. bog standard.
Capacitance: (4 nf - 2mF)
doesn't really recognize below 100 pf but can recongnize some relatively high capacitances. which is nice. (takes a while to calculate higher values and I cannot confirm it's accuracy)
ohms, continuity, diode test and capacitance are all on the same range and must be selected individually with a "select" button which is kinda annoying.
Celsius/fahrenheit measurement: (-40c - 1370c)(-40f - 2000f) this is a standard thermocouple mesurement, thermocouples are not really very accurate devices and the one included gets the job done, but really does almost the bare minimum for thermocouple measurements. so no cold junction comp, the leads have banana plugs therefore higher thermal mass and larger temperature different between the banana juntions (cool band name), the thermocouple hot junction is long and a bit fragile, theres plenty of different metal junctions within the meter itself. BUT whatever it works and it works to a high temperature so as long as you know it's not accurate you should be good.
Current: like the volts, and resistance ranges the meter is nice and accurate when measuring amps. it has a 100 ohm shunt resistor in the uA range and a 1ish ohm shunt resistor in the mA range. this should make for relatively good burden voltage preformance. the uA, and mA ranges do share the same input socket as the voltage, and resistance ranges which can lead to some accidents if you are not vigilant. (keep a spare fuse on hand)
the 10 amp range has a seperate input and works ok.
Input protection, this thing has fused amp ranges, the fuses are unmarked ceramic fuses, a nice smd diode bridge for the current ranges and two whole PTCs on the voltage input
Build quality: it's made from nice hard plastic that doesn't creak when in use, it's rubber bumper shield probably wont be stopping a lot of damage but it feels nice at least, it has an easily accessable battery compartment accessable by removing one screw which is held in with the only metal threaded insert in the meter. the tilt bail is acceptable and latches which is nice touch, the pcb is clean and well organized, soldering is pretty decent. the input sockets are bent metal and probably will wear out eventually. the LCD viewing angles kinda suck.
misc: the backlight last for like 15 seconds and requires you to hold down the "hold/*" button kinda annoying.
the main IC of the meter is probably the DM1106 in a chip on board construction (epoxy blob). I say so since I've seen a previous revision of this meter sporting the IC in it's smd package. being that it probably uses that IC I imagine it is possible to modify this meter's firmware by reflashing it's eeprom IC (T24C02A 2k eeprom). allowing users to fix the backlight timing and display up to 9000 counts along with being able to calibrate the meter. alas I haven't tried but if you have found some success please share on the eevblog or something that would be cool.
Test leads measure 100cm and 50 miliohms and can actually handle up to 10 amps without turning into goo :)
conclusion: it good. I got mine for 28$ cad delivered and for that price it is very good meter. u should buy if you aren't like working on power lines or don't have 1000$ allocated to multimeter expenses from your company.
