Being a mom can sometimes feel like an overwhelming job with endless tasks and lofty, unattainable goals. It’s not easy mothering children. In the throes of motherhood, moms often find themselves forgetting something foundational to their own identity: moms are people too. This is a book for mothers, but not about mothering. It’s a book about education, but not about teaching children.

This is a book about self-education. It is a book about how a mother can capture her moments and days in such a way that they add up to a life worth living. Her life.

In
Beyond Mere Motherhood, Cindy Rollins shows moms how they can develop their own personhood—how they can keep thinking, growing, and playing. She casts a vision for them to cultivate beauty and wisdom in themselves, even as they faithfully—and busily—mother their children. Cindy shows moms how to pursue their ideal in the midst of reality.

Moms are people too.

A book to give you hope.
5 Stars
A book to give you hope.
This is an encouraging book. A book that will fill you full of hope and a sense of calm and direction. The reading is smooth and the words are soothing. It should be read slowly but it’s just so hard to put it down. The author is just the person that you want to hear from all the time. She’s that voice that you need when things are not going the way you think they should. She’s also that voice that will not shy away from speaking truth about things that matter; that actually matter. If you feel lost, hopeless, and without a sense of direction, this book will point you in the way you can go. The book is also full of beautiful ideas for a full and rewarding life as a mother.

It's encouraging yet also challenging and will be one I return to many times. Cindy has a unique way of writing that makes you feel like she is sitting next to you on the couch. Her humor shines through and her transparency and vulnerability about being a mother, especially a homeschooling one, is refreshing and encouraging.

I am not as skilled a writer as Cindy and I could not even put into a pithy title what this book means to mothers-especially Christian mothers. It’s filled with hard earned wisdom, humility, humor, and is an amazing resource for any mother wanting more for herself. Cindy proves you don’t need a degree or tons of time-just keep plodding and those little redeemed moments of time add up to a beautiful lifetime of love and learning. I will be mailing this book to many a mom friend.

I can hardly put this down, but it is one to savor, so I am forcing myself to go slow. I had no idea it would be so rich with book recommendations. Just what I needed to start the new year. It's THE perfect book to do that.

Update Now that I've finished: Beyond Mere Motherhood is something every mom in any stage of life should read. It is a friend in book-form that convicts, points to Christ first and foremost and mentors. A Titus woman for those of us who didn't/don't have that. It keeps the future in focus, and brings hope to motherhood education and refinement as a mother and person. What a beautiful thing to think about all the moms who will feel seen and loved through this book. It will be a yearly read.

I'm a mom of six in my early 40s. Sorta in the thick of raising little kids, but also experiencing having adult children too. I really appreciated this book that encouraged moms to make time for their own learning. This book was not written to be overwhelming. I finished feeling inspired, but not feeling like I had one more thing I needed to add to my day.

Cindy is the only writer whose books I buy as soon as they are released. This one was no exception, and I’ve gobbled it up in just two days. But I will certainly be thinking about it for a long time and then rereading it. Following her wonderful memoir, Mere Motherhood, this book focuses more on the mothers whom Cindy has such a love for and ministers to so well. She encourages us to apply Charlotte Mason’s principles to ourselves and to trust in God’s Word and the Lord Jesus Christ rather than the empty, vain promises of Instagram and the materialistic, utilitarian culture we live in. She encourages us to embrace the truth that what we do has meaning, worth, and value, but not according to the world’s standards where everything has to be measurable, Insta-worthy, and proven with dollar signs. I highly recommend this book to young mothers who need hope (and perhaps a dose of humility) and for older moms who think they’ve made too many mistakes. We need older moms like Cindy who aren’t afraid to show us their battle scars and share their hard won wisdom—Cindy does so with such grace, humility, good humor, and love.

I love Cindy Rollins. She is like a friend entering your life and chatting with you. Her mind is rich with books and knowledge and yet she is so down to earth you feel right at home with her. Thank you, Cindy. You're on my hero board of people I look up to and take advice and comfort from. This book is a must read for those seeking wisdom and inspiration on the motherhood path. ❤️

I enjoyed reading Mere Motherhood and this book has not been a disappointment. It is written for moms, but also for simply women. I’m reading it slowly since there is so much to ruminate.
