A tornado throws a flying squirrel far from home, into the human world. Led by merciless fate, human whims, and it's own instincts, it soon finds itself in all kind of trouble. Adventures of a Flying Squirrel in Faraway Lands is a fantasy adventure in imagined history. A speedy journey full of action, drama, magic, and heart, from an innocent animal's perspective. Venla Bevan is a finnish author, whose writing could be called simplistic and poetic. She succeeds to create an image, motion, and depth, with surprisingly little description. Instead, she leads the reader's imagination, by tugging at it with carefully fitted words. The result shows as fast-flowing story, colourful and abundant in context. The story is in english AND finnish. You may follow the flow of text in these two languages almost word-by-word. This is crafted to serve anyone who is curious about the finnish language, or studying it on an advanced level. There are also 9 pictures in color, by the author, spicing up the pages. The story is suitable for children, but may be too rough a ride for the very sensitive. Get ready to be swept off your tree!

Venla Bevan is a Finnish independent author and creator. She lives in North-Karelian woodlands, in the vicinity of Finnish – Russian border. Her source of inspirations lies deep in the Finnish forest, mysticism of the borderlands, differences in cultures and mentalities, and traditional storytelling of her homeland.

From early on she demonstrated her creative talent by writing the longest essay ever written in her primary school at the age of 8. She also won a drawing contest among schools in the city of Kitee, at age 12. After this, her creative streak was put on a long pause, when she began intense traveling, first around Finland, then around the World. Her love of home eventually brought her back to North-Karelia, where she began to study unique local legends, history, and myths. Finally, she sat down to write and draw again.

Her first published book: Adventures of a Flying Squirrel in Faraway Lands (2023), has received a warm welcome as a unique bilingual book item. The book tells a story of a flying squirrel, who by a happenstance ends up far away from home, and encounters wild adventures among humans. Venla Bevan wrote the story in 2 languages: English and Finnish – and typeset the text, so that it can be red side-by-side for comparison. The artwork within the book has also been praised for it’s ‘genuine’ style.

Known for her elusive nature, Venla Bevan likes to mind her own business. She does not often make public appearance, but is most visible through her video channels, on Youtube and Rumble, where she occasionally posts small stories and videos of her forest adventures. She is also sometimes seen to take part in social events of her local community.

Visit her official home page. There you can find her social media channels, and her blogs:

-VB’s Blog of Shared Escapism, - where she features some reviews of fantasy themed media.

-VB’s Blog of Home-made Miracles, - where she shares recipes, tips and cultural bites from her life.

Venla Bevan has a feed on X/twitter.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise!

This book surprised me pleasantly! It is very good quality and unique! Hardcover. The pictures are charming! The layout is cute, it has little decorations on pages as well. The story was deeper than I thought and occasionally made me emotional. The style of the author takes some getting used to, if you are used to reading texts in very quick pace. Here you need to slow down, because the story goes so fast that you slip off trail if you read too fast. Some parts were pretty rough, it brought me back to Grimm's tales style awful but cool. To be honest I don't really care about the English-Finnish translations, but because even the titles have proverbs with deeper meaning in these two languages, it makes me feel curious about maybe learning finnish in the future.
I wanted to give this 4 and a half stars, a little bit of penalty coming from the pictures being so nice that I wanted there to be more of them! Also, not sure about the book's 2 languages serving me, but maybe they serve someone else better. Overall, I am keeping this.
