Had mine for a couple if years...

Had mine for a couple if years...
I've seen mixed reviews.... Over all I've a had great experience with mine.. for the price you get a thick slab of carbon steel with all it's strengths and weaknesses... Of.... *Drum Roll* Carbon steel... You want indestructibility? Pay premium for a super steel.... But also suffer at the sharpening stone. LOL... Like I said I've had mine for several years now.... Yes I've used it to process wood... but just because it's thick and big it doesn't mean it'll please all the survival nuts, you gotta know how to use it.....Never go full gorilla.... Just because it's sturdy it doesnt mean it'll do the job of a maul or axe, I can probably break mine if i wanted too.... Maybe stab the tip into a hard wood and leverage it, or whack it across the grain on a god awfully twisted piece of almond wood or even better batton an oak log full of knots... You'll probably break it..... i guess you get the point... Regardless for the 20 something dollars you get a sheath, a fire steel and a sharpening stone.... and a crusty poop coating... Yet This thing is incredibly easy to sharpen, spine scrapes the firesteel beautifully and the jimping adds grip for delicate tasks... And if you know what you're doing... It processes wood like a champ... and if you prep food it'll take a beautiful rust patina... (After you remove the coating) It isn't a carver but you can definitely feathersticks… If not ask batton bob who brought him into this world from a limb of birch.... UPdATE 2022 baton Bob has passed away, this knife’s spine destroyed him.. beat the crap out of it 2021 using it as a throwing knife, and as the official fire pit/bbq go to for batoning, I can say I’ve split maple, pecan, oak, mesquite, birch, pine, nectarine, and cherry limbs no trouble, the scales are beat, and it rusted being outside in the rain, got micro chips along the edge probably from the throwing, I’ve restored it twice since then, added a convex edge, a couple hits on a strop and it’s shaving sharp, been babying it with mineral oil, still worth it!!! it has reached legendary status among my collection, price to value even with inflation is still undefeated… added a picture of it disassembled after hitting it with a wire brush and sharpening.

The difference between the SCHF36 and 36M is the laminated micarta (M) handle. That might be obvious to some or a mystery to folks like myself new to what have come to be known as 'bushcraft/survival' knives. I have both the 36 and 36M: one of them in the Toyota, the other in my truck. I don't know if the micarta handle justifies the price difference between the 36 and 36M. The fire starter and sharpening steel are convenient additions to the purchase but I don't know as they'd be a deal breaker either. This is the third knife I've purchased that comes with its own buzzwords, i.e. bushcraft & survival. The other is a Kershaw Camp 10. The next will likely be a Morakniv Companion. . .and for the price of those I'll likely buy three.

Most bushknives are monsters. I've looked at many of the YouTube video reviews. The sky's the limit to obsessiveness. But, price points usually drive the bus. This Schrade 36 like its brother the 36M is a heavy piece of steel. The blade looks like a combination of "hollow ground" and "sabre ground". The cutting edges on mine were not evenly ground. Good edges are "V" shaped, symmetrical and invisible: out of the box the edge on both the 36 & 36m were both visible and asymmetrical. So, Schrade's price point precludes too much attention to detail. That said, the knife arrives sharp enough with a decent sheath, fire starter and sharpening stone. If you want it sharper or re-ground, go for it. But then, you'd be into Ka-Bar or Kershaw territory. Barring obsessive behavior, most of us would be happy with this knife out of the box.

You 'could' potentially shave with it given a bit of work on the edge. But, I didn't buy a full quarter-inch tang, with handle-jimping and a choil to shave with: this blade is 1 1/2" wide, 1/4" thick and 4 1/4" in front of the finger choil!! No swage: the tang is 1/4" all the way to within 3/4" of the tip where it begins to bevel. There's no real pommel on the handle's end. However, the spine is most of 1/4" thick so my thought is, if you can baton with it you'll be able to pound a bit with it as well.

This is a very heavy, stoutly-built knife designed for a lot of abuse that will serve for years. If I could only have one knife at this price point it'd be this one or one very similar to it. This one will spend most of its life in my truck for emergency use, i.e. breaking windows, baton work, removing back straps & tenderloins from the occasional gubbermint goat, etc.

I own a more expensive Becker BK2, and have used it pretty roughly while camping and working in the yard and woods. I bought this one to lighten the load because the BK2 is pretty worn. I opened up the package and immediately remembered why I like Schrade knives. They are an excellent value for what you pay. I'm not going to talk about angle of grind, type of steel it's made of. I use my knives hard, then I clean them and sharpen them, and do it again.

The Schrade felt amazing in the hand. Very ergonomic, UNLIKE the BK2 which feels like a sewer pipe with a sharp crowbar on the end. The handle is a hard rubbery substance which feels good to hold, is not slippery when it's wet, but also not aggressive like a pokey G10 grip on a 1911. It's well balanced for rough use as well as more delicate stuff. I was able to baton wood, and then gently grade some shavings off without any problem.

Of all of the "doubles as a crowbar" knives out there I think I like the feel of this one the best. Yet it's slim and comfortable enough where I'd be happy to have it as my only knife in the woods or hunting. I haven't had it as long but as long as it doesn't break, this one will replace my BK2 as my all around hard use knife. For less than half the price, you can't beat it.

My only slight issue is the sheath isn't that great, typical nylon generic sheath. Well enough made, will hold up fine, just doesn't grab me. I'd prefer Kydex with some different mounting options, more like the BK2 sheath.

A selling point of this knife is that you also get a decent ferro rod and a sharpening stone with it, that all fit in the sheath. Not bad for less than $40. The rod and sharpening stone work fine, not outstanding but they get the job done. That's what this knife is all about. It'll get the job done.

This is one chunky monkey! Not too big and definitely not too small. It has a 5” blade that’s about a 1/4” thick and ready to go to work. It came adequately sharpened with a ferrous rod and striker along with a diamond dust sharpener and an ok nylon sheath that will do the job but I also ordered a tracker style sheath to carry it at the small of the back. The blade has a nice finish and the top has a 90 degree edge that will strike the ferro rod and a very sticky rubber handle that fits really nice in the hands. Being approximately 1/4” thick I was able to do some light battoning on some 3” thick pieces of wood (all I had laying around) but I would not hesitate to try it on some larger pieces as long as it’s close to the edge as you process the wood. It’s about the same size as my BK1 but at a fraction of the cost I will update this review after a few months.

3.0 out of 5 stars Schönes Messer
Reviewed in Germany on June 3, 2017
