Peterson Field Guide To Moths Of Northeastern North America (Peterson Field Guides) Paperback – Illustrated, April 17, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
There are thousands of moth species in the northeast of North America, and while it might seem that they are all drab grays and browns, there is actually a startling variety. They come in a rainbow of colors, from brilliant oranges and pinks to soft greens and violets. There are moths with colorful leopard-like spots, and ones that look more like B-movie aliens; some that are as large as your hand, and others the size of a grain of rice. With helpful tips on how to attract and identify moths, range maps and season graphs showing when and where to find each species, and clear photographs that use the unique Peterson arrow system for easy identification, this guide provides everything an amateur or experienced moth-watcher needs. Sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation and the Roger Tory Peterson Institute.

SEABROOKE LECKIE is a freelance biologist and writer with a passion for nature, especially moths.
About the Author
DAVID BEADLE is a professional freelance bird illustrator who happens to have a passion for moths. He has been interested in moths for over thirty years, both in his native UK and in Ontario, Canada. For the past two decades he has traveled extensively within Ontario documenting and photographing moths. He has a particular interest in identification and feels it is important to portray these fascinating creatures alive and in their natural resting positions.
SEABROOKE LECKIE is a freelance writer and naturalist who became interested in moths after realizing they suited her night-owl tendencies much better than birds. She lives in eastern Ontario with her husband and two young kids, with whom she enjoys roaming their rural yard and discovering its inhabitants, six-legged and otherwise.

About the authors

Seabrooke Leckie is a freelance biologist and writer living in rural eastern Ontario. She holds a B.Sc.H. in Zoology and has worked on field research contracts in many parts of the continent, from California to Québec, British Columbia to Ohio, as well as her home province of Ontario. She discovered moths quite by accident one summer while away on contract, and they've since become her number one passion. Birds are her second interest; she is a federally-licensed bird bander and volunteers each summer with a local bird research organization. She's the co-author of the new Peterson Field Guide to Moths of Northeastern North America, and has been involved with other publications such as the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas and the newsletter of the Ontario Field Ornithologists. Most afternoons you can find her outdoors, peering closely at flora and fauna, camera in hand; nights, of course, are spent at her moth sheet. She blogs her discoveries at her website, seabrookeleckie.com

I finally ended up biting the bullet and buying the "Moths of Western United States as well". which is NOT a field guide and cost about $100 and goes more in depth to species level, has a large number of understandably smaller photographs, and with great diagrams of taxonomic features I'll never ID in the field but that will help me understand the taxonomic level. The two books seem symbiotic for my needs; I"m hoping the Peterson guide will help me key in on the family, and then to use the MWNA for more precise ID.
It would be really nice to have a Peterson's field guide to the moths of (the western United States or the pacific states).
I stumbled across this book when I was doing some insect identification with my kids, and it has opened up a whole new world for me. If you're into other forms of nature-watching (particularly birds), beware - you may feel compelled to take up a new hobby. The diversity and beauty of these little guys are every bit as enthralling as birds, and what's more, they come to your porch light at night to visit you! I already have 80+ species on my moth "life list" and I'm looking forward to ID'ing many more. I want to thank the authors for all their hard work, and for revealing a world I never knew existed.
