Strength train for sport AND life
In this book, Menachem teaches how to strength train/lift heavy to improve sport performance, reduce risk of injury and aches/pains without leaving you feeling smashed after a strength session. His method helps us be strong for our sport and for longevity and quality of LIFE! This book explains how true strength comes from quality movement, and how to achieve it. Menachem provides a holistic approach, including info about recovery, nutrition, and other life factors outside of physical fitness. Menachem has helped me become a stronger athlete (recent PR at track workout and a strong half marathon finish with minimal run training) AND a better coach.

There isn’t another coach I’ve encountered who is as invested in your performance and longevity as Brodie. With his latest book, he lays out a foundation for athletic pursuit that uses strength to improve our ability to maintain (and even grow) our ability to perform as we transition to becoming a masters athlete. Brodie covers all the components of health span that we need to engage in while giving us research and experience based approaches to getting stronger, improving mobility, strengthening our hormonal and energetic systems in pursuit of performance.

I’ve worked with Coach Menachem through three major cycles of my life with Crohn’s Disease and my athletic goals. Most recently, he has helped me rebuild my body after having a full colectomy and abdominal reconstruction. With his expertise on foundational movement and strength we went from ground zero to setting a 10 minute PR at the half marathon distance in seven months. I’ve used his books and YouTube content to deepen my understanding of his approach and found there is no one better for getting to the real work while acknowledging the real person doing it. I highly recommend anyone interested in a life-long vision of strength and performance to check out Lift Heavy Sh*t.

I've just started this book and can tell already that it will be an easy read and is full of great information. At age 55, I am trying to find a strength program that will keep me strong and healthy so I can pedal into my 80s and beyond.
"Strength is the foundation of any activity",. I am looking forward to making a solid strength and flexibility plan using this book as a guide.

I have been consulting some with Menachem over the past year and have bought his previous book as well as several of his training plans on TrainingPeaks. I have learned to appreciate both his extensive knowledge and his ability to craft programs that are entirely doable year round while still training and riding fast on the bike.
This book is another step in my arsenal of learning how to move and train better year round as I continue riding fast in my master years. I feel that this book will allow me to better internalize these concepts as I continue to craft a personalized year long training plan tailored effectively for me.

As a 60 year old recently retired firefighter and avid cyclist, I now have more time to ride and work out in the gym. My struggle has been figuring out what to do in the gym that will enhance, rather than detract from my performance on the bike. This book has the answers with clear explanations why some exercises are better than others. If you're a masters cyclist and want to build and maintain lean muscle mass all over while getting faster on the bike, then this book is a great place to start.

I’ve read better. The author paints a compelling picture for the need to incorporate strength training into the training program. However I didn’t find it overly informative on anything else in regards to it.

The training plan can be essentially summed up as do a full body workout with heavy weights, lifting 2-3 times per week while keeping in mind the goal is to improve sports performance and not maximizing gym strength. Therefore only operate with a perceived exertion of 7 on a 1-10 scale.

As a beginner cyclist I have concentrated mostly on turning the pedals and completing my workouts.

Lately I have been noticing a definite lack of strength both on the bike and with every day activities.
Just the wake-up call to do what I’ve always known was a necessary part of training but didn’t include it for whatever reason.

With this book, I’m looking forward to putting in to place a smart strength training plan that meets me where I’m at now and to having a solid blueprint for how to progress. Thanks Menachem!

When I picked up the first book, I was a slow chronically injured cyclist and I can say without a doubt that Menachem's approach really changed my life. I can now ride long rides without any pain with endurance and stamina. Most importantly I can play with my kids without being worried about back pain or any kind of pain. I am solid and happy. The second book is also a must for all kinds of cyclistvtgat want to perform or just feel great on and off the bike.

Excellent book for those of us who are getting on in age. Packed with practical advice for continuing to enjoy the sport we're passionate about.

I particularly appreciate the specific focus on cycling, debunking myths and addressing misconceptions about strength training that - with age - can lead to health problems due to muscle loss and reduced flexibility.

Moreover, it's an easy and enjoyable read. I'm devouring the book and putting its recommendations into practice."

5.0 out of 5 stars Strength training explained - structured framework to in-depth understanding of activities
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 27, 2024
At the age of 54 I returned to cycling, mountain biking and started my journey to improve my health and fitness. I do not have much in the way of experience of training for performance and so am on a journey of understanding. I have picked up some understanding on how strength training supports my development from various soucres which has helped shape by direction and led to me engaging a Coach. I am finding the new book from Menachem Brodie super helpful in further developing my understanding about strength training and the quality of the conversation I am having with my Coach. It has really further my understanding of the ‘how and why’ to develop a training plan, and importantly the areas that need to be focused on to support my personal development in the most efficient in order to support my long term health and fitness. I found this book well laid out and easy to read with a little hearted approach taken by Menachem. There is a lot of information packed into this small book, I am already jumping back to re-read sections, making notes and exploring the information provided. I have a greater understanding of what the year training cycle looks like for me, the types of strength activity I should be doing in each phase of the year and how to work the strength training in alongside to compliment my on bike training.

As someone who's lifted weights from his mid teens and got into cycling in my mid 30s and is now pressing on 50 I always found it odd when cycling based strength advice often focused on only lifting for a few weeks in the off season and only training legs, this guy tells you what a load of nonsense that is and gives great advice on a whole host of other facets of combining cycling and strength training to make you a well rounded athlete.
    Just buy it.

This is a great resource. Really good info on hows and whys of lifting consistently without wrecking yourself for your cycling.

This book could have saved me a lot of time trying to figure out how to put it all together.

Still digesting it but I like the sections on assessing movement, and managing the load on the bar. Some Interesting stuff on how strength training affects the body. A lot of which I haven’t come across before in other strength training books.

A good companion to his first book also.
