Dream Wise: Unlocking the Meaning of Your Dreams Hardcover – November 12, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
An unprecedented, dreamwork-centered guide for exploring and understanding your dreams, presented by three Jungian analysts and the hosts of the podcast This Jungian Life
With Dream Wise, three expert teachers bring you a resource like none before it―a comprehensive, step-by-step guide synthesizing Carl Jung’s renowned theories with the best approaches of those who have followed in his footsteps. Ideal for every level of experience, Dream Wise is for all who are ready to meet “the faithful other, the dream maker, who visits each night with gifts of wisdom.”
The goal is to do dreamwork, not just learn about it…
“Your dreams offer a wealth of wisdom and wonder,” explain the authors. “They are one of the best, most reliable ways to get to know our mysterious depths. But you must―quite literally―rise to meet them. Sustained dreamwork facilitates a dialogue between the surface and the depths and is an essential aid in our process of unfolding.”
In Dream Wise, Lisa Marchiano, Deborah Stewart, and Joseph Lee transform the most useful dreamwork concepts and principles into a unique series of 69 “keys” to unlock the meaning of your dreams, illuminating:
• How dreamwork assists us on the path of becoming whole (what Jung called individuation)
• The three levels of dream imagery: personal associations, factual explanations, and archetypal amplifications
• The shadow―the unconscious, unwelcome aspects of yourself that you can meet and integrate with the help of your dreams
• Animus/anima―the personification of our unrealized possibilities that urges us toward our highest destiny
• The practice of active imagination, Jung’s signature technique for psychological healing and growth
• How to interpret your dreams―including case examples from the authors’ professional practices, 16 daily strategies to boost dream recall, insights into the structure and dynamics of your dreams, and more
“Working with dreams requires flexibility, fluidity, and fluency in the symbolic, but above all, it should be enlivening,” say the authors. Dream Wise gives you a trustworthy map for exploring the vast reaches of your dreams… an exciting new path to creativity and healing… and a faithful compass to your true becoming.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“A great introduction to Jungian dreamwork! Not only will you learn Jungian dreamwork but also some key Jungian concepts. Practical and inspiring, it deepens your relationship with your dream life and, consequently, enriches your waking life! Highly recommended!” ―Machiel Klerk, psychotherapist, author of Dream Guidance, and founder of Jung Platform
“If you’ve ever wondered what your dreams mean, then Dream Wise is the book for you. Dream Wise offers a well-written, comprehensive, deep, and practical way to understand Jungian dreamwork for both the beginner and the experienced. And it’s fun to read and to work with the exercises that the authors provide.” ―Linda Leonard, PhD, author of The Wounded Woman and The Call to Create
“If you want to do a huge favor to your inner dream maker, your rational ego, and your collective unconscious, read this book! Understand how ingeniously (and playfully) your psyche is working each night to help you move forward in your life journey and tune in to the numinous! An exhilarating and entertaining journey through a rich, edifying, and ultimately mysterious terrain.” ―Elif Batuman, novelist and author of The Idiot and Either/Or
“Fabulous! It’s comprehensive in scope yet readable and accessible even for those new to Jung’s ideas. This book provides an invaluable service to the Jungian community and all those interested in dreams.” ―Patricia Berry, PhD, Jungian analyst and author of Echo’s Subtle Body
“This is one of the best overall books I’ve ever read on the practice of dream interpretation. Not just an excellent primer on Jung’s psychology of dreaming, Dream Wise speaks to our contemporary yearning for a greater life purpose than merely satisfying the desires of the ego, a yearning to become healthy and whole and actualized in all our potentials. The path of your dreams leads in precisely this direction, and you could ask for no better guides than Lisa, Deborah, and Joseph, whose deep familiarity and respect for each other creates an alchemically playful dynamic in their ways of exploring the mythically charged realm of dreaming. Highly recommended!” ―Kelly Bulkeley, PhD, author of The Spirituality of Dreaming
“Who knew a teacher as great as the dream maker lay waiting for us night after night? And all we have to do is listen and apply the right keys for the lessons to be unlocked. The symbolic and guiding significance of my dreams has always been sort of abstract and unattainable to me. I’d wake up and never really remember what happened throughout the night. And if I did remember, I had no idea what to make of it. But whilst reading this book, it was like a cracking open of a whole new aspect of myself, one that had just been lying there forgotten, waiting to be remembered and communed with. Applying the keys set out in the book helped me become more in tune with the deep, mysterious realm of my dreaming unconscious, and I was able to not only remember but expand upon and learn from the stories and dreams brought forth in my sleep. It has been a fascinating and deeply illuminating process with this wonderful companion of a book, and I will certainly keep it on my nightstand for years to come.” ―Finn Jones, actor
“Everyone dreams, and that’s proof of your innate ability to spontaneously create images, characters, stories, and worlds. If you don’t feel like a creative person, you have a broken relationship with the part of you that effortlessly dreams. This book holds the keys to unlocking that intuitive, creative, deepest part of yourself!” ―Andy J. Pizza, New York Times bestselling author and illustrator
“The three hosts of This Jungian Life podcast have created a clear and practical introduction to dreams for those seeking to deepen their self-understanding. They have developed a unique ‘key’ system that facilitates engagement with dreams and ensures that the dreamwork process remains experiential and emotionally alive. This book will be a wonderful resource for those seeking guidance as they begin their dream journey.” ―Mark Winborn, PhD, Jungian psychoanalyst and clinical psychologist, author of Interpretation in Jungian Analysis and Jungian Psychoanalysis: A Contemporary Introduction
“An accessible and utterly engrossing guide to the language of our dreams and thus to our true selves. Whether you’re a fan of the authors’ wonderful podcast, This Jungian Life, or the works of Carl Jung, or just find yourself on that ever-human journey of personal individuation, this book is a must-have. If being in league with one’s inner dream maker is the ultimate and most ancient form of self-help, this book holds the key to unparalleled personal growth and transformation.” ―Justin Simien, filmmaker, actor, and author
“A solid and responsible introduction to the value of dreams for the individual. It is based on Jungian methods for mining the rich meaning of dreams for our daily lives. The book is a valuable guide to understanding and interpreting dreams in and out of analytic contexts.” ―Murray Stein, PhD, author of Jung’s Map of the Soul
“Of all the depth psychologists following Freud, only C. G. Jung privileged the dream as a key to the mysteries of the inner world. In this supremely useful book, three experienced Jungian analysts address the practical question of “how” we can work with our dreams in order to open the hidden meanings that lie in the dream symbols and motifs. The result is an excellent guide for laypersons and professionals alike. I highly recommend this book!” ―Donald Kalsched, PhD, author of The Inner World of Trauma and Trauma and the Soul
“As a filmmaker, I love using my dreams as a guide for my storytelling, and I find this book exquisitely inspiring. The reverence the authors have for the dream maker (a part of us all), and their deep devotion to the mystery of the inner world, resonates powerfully with what I know of the creative process and of my own impulse as a storyteller, which is, creating the story I need to experience in the world in order to know myself more deeply and to heal. So too, the dream maker, you and I, are creating every night the dreams we each need in order to become whole, and this book offers beautiful keys, questions, and prompts that can lead to a more intimate understanding of the mysterious depths of ourselves.” ―Deborah Kampmeier, filmmaker
“This is a remarkable book: a rigorous yet utterly absorbing guide to the wisdom-filled world we enter nightly. I began dream analysis as a skeptic, but its benefits have been too powerful to ignore―and I can't imagine a better companion than Dream Wise for making the journey.” ―Oliver Burkeman, author of Four Thousand Weeks

- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2024I have been recording my dreams for more than twenty years, and in that time, I’ve never encountered a book that could really walk me step by step through analyzing any of them. That is, until this book was released.
The hosts of This Jungian Life do a fantastic job of taking their Dream School material and making it accessible to more people. It is nearly organized into broad areas such as associations, dream structure, time, among so many other elements. It includes journaling prompts, clarifying questions, appendices to help you lead to recall dreams, and a handy checklist of the various keys they offer for analysis. There are more than enough example dreams in the book to show how the keys are applied.
I devoured this book, and find myself returning to it again and again, expanding my own understanding of the keys in this book with each subsequent dream I record.
If ever you wanted to learn how analyze dreams from a Jungian perspective, you cannot do better than this book. It is free of obfuscation and jargon, and it takes you through all the core concepts you need to hit the ground running.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2025Dream Wise is, by far, the clearest and most accessible book on dream interpretation I’ve come across. It effectively explains Jungian theoretical principles, recognizes the deeply personal nature of each dream, and provides practical teaching tools for the dreamer to explore meaningful communication from the unconscious. The book is rich with dream examples from the authors' extensive experience, clearly outlining potential interpretations that highlight key insights for the reader.
Additionally, the book presents a few interpretations of Jungian principles that are both totally new and profoundly insightful. The chapter on the Anima and Animus is particularly enlightening, offering a deep, clear, and practical narrative on their roles in the psyche, how they function, and how they may manifest in our dreams.
I’m excited to see more work from this dynamic collaboration of authors!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2024I have been working with my dreams for a while and I thought I didn’t really need this book. But wow, the way these authors capture such complex concepts and ground them in easily accessible metaphors, analogies, and practices has made me appreciate my dreams more deeply than I ever have. My favorite thing was learning that my dream maker loves me! How comforting to know an inner companion, a loving observing witness, tries to communicate with me every night, helping me make sense of my life. So cool!
… but sounds very woo woo, right? I’ve been skeptical myself, but then when I have a dream that so perfectly illustrates an experience I’ve been having that I could not articulate myself, it is quite uncanny. I’m often shocked at the creative precision of my dreams. When I understand them, I can explore the real world situation with this new inner knowing… and that has been so tremendously powerful and meaningful for me.
I’ve tried to encourage people close to me to work with their dreams too but they are doubtful and dismissive. I’m thrilled this book gives me the language to explain it better to them… and maybe even inspires them to learn more about dreams on their own!
Would it be obnoxious if I stood on a city block corner, ringing a bell, handing out copies of this book, yelling, “Your dream maker loves you!” …. 👀

- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2025The authors, who are well-equipped to teach us how to read a dream and analyze it, do just that! The three authors are seasoned Jungian analysts who have started a school for learning how to analyze a dream and offer weekly podcasts where they discuss one of their student's dreams. What is remarkable is the sheer amount of personal case studies they draw from to illustrate their succinct points. Well-written, it is not something that you could read in a sitting--it should be put down often so that the reader can practice on their own dream. Highly Recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2025I've been listening to "This Jungian Life" podcast for 2 years. It resonated with me from the very first time I listened. Dreamwise is a fabulous companion to the podcast. I am so glad I treated myself to this book. I'm actually remembering my dreams much better and working with a dream journal for the first time in my life. Thank you Deborah, Lisa, and Joseph for the gift of insight. P.S. I rarely write reviews.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024I have been working with my dreams for decades using a method outlined in Robert A. Johnson's book, Inner Work: Using Dreams and Active Imagination for Personal Growth, which I highly recommend. I thought I knew all I needed to know about dream interpretation. What a surprise, then, when Dreamwise opened a new world to me. I purchased both the hardcover and audiobook (expertly narrated by one of the authors) in order to refer back to key sections. Among its many tools, Dreamwise has taught me to question my dream ego's interpretation of events, and to engage in dialogue with my inner dream maker. Powerful and transformative. Run out and buy it!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2024When I first heard of these analysts podcast, This Jungian Life, I became a follower. Though for many years I've read numerous books by and about Jung, including very fine works on dream interpretation, DREAM WISE tops them all. It offers new perspectives on the various aspects that dreams can take, and the "keys" are extremely helpful. One of my favorite parts of the podcast is when the three of them discuss a listener's dream, and this is one of the great aspects of this book. It's clear that the dream school that grew out of the podcast offered the foundation for creating this work. Hurray! It's a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Dream Wise is an impressive work on dream analysis and it's hard to imagine a better one. It manages to be comprehensive without being overwhelming, and practical while still being profound.
I am a longtime listener of the authors' podcast, This Jungian Life, and took their online course on dream analysis a few years ago, so I'm not new to Jungian dream interpretation. Paying attention and attempting to understand my dreams has been life changing. If you try it and stick with it for a while, I believe most people will experience first-hand the idea and promise that we have an inner companion that is attempting to guide us every night towards fully inhabiting who we truly are.
I found the online Dream School to be a great introduction to dream analysis (and can highly recommend it too) but their new book Dream Wise has helped me go so much further into a deepened understanding of my dreams. Only a short time after beginning to read it, I am able to glean so much more from my dreams, and now have a point of reference when I encounter particularly baffling elements.
Whether or not you are interested in Jungian psychology per se, the Jungian model of understanding your dreams is comprehensive, has stood the test of time, and has striven to be as universal to the human condition as possible. No prior knowledge of Jung or the need to buy into the whole system of understanding is necessary. This book systematizes the method is the most accessible way.
If you'd like to have your mind blown by discovering the mysterious companion inside, buy this book. It's sometimes an unsettling ride (which maybe is part of the point) but it's completely worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important book to read
I have been an avid listener of TJL podcast over the years, discovered and learned so much, been introduced to other wonderful and insightful authors, bought and read their books, Lisa Marchiano’s books, get a surge of excitement every time TJL post a new episode. But it has taken me a while to buy Dream Wise, it’s been in my Amazon basket for a while. Curious and puzzled by my slight reluctance to read it, I realised that although I, like most people, want to understand the imagery and narratives of the dream world and what they may be revealing to us, I also feel a hesitation to literalise and define them, dreams being mysterious and other worldly by definition. I also use dream content frequently in my artwork, and appreciate the power of suggestion. I wasn’t sure what to expect with DW. Finally I bought it and read it. I should have known. The familiar voices/ thoughts of Lisa Marchiano, Deborah Stewart and Joseph Lee as usual, bringing such rich insight, such honest delivery of vital information and most importantly, provide guidance to find the entry points into discovering the potential meanings of dream content. Meaning isn’t imposed on the reader. We are invited to discover for ourselves, our own unconscious nudges. I found the book as exciting as looking and reading artwork in a gallery. The authors are guiding companions on your journey. The book isn’t a full stop … it’s a gateway to so much undiscovered parts of ourselves. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imponerande informationstät
