Be Your Own Cheerleader: An Asian and South Asian Woman's Cultural, Psychological, and Spiritual Guide to Self-Promote at Work Paperback – January 24, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
The intention for Be Your Own Cheerleader is to help professional Asian and South Asian women—who have toggled between the two very different cultures of East and West—thrive in the workplace. When you are raised in the collective we, it is very difficult to make a name and place for yourself in the individual I. Not only are you unskilled in advocating for yourself, but you are also unsure of how to be proud of your work or accomplishments. Neelu Kaur’s analysis of various research is at the intersection of leadership and wellness, offering a cultural, psychological, and spiritual approach to rising as a leader while simultaneously addressing mental wellbeing.
This is the first book to help Asian and South Asian women succeed in the North American workplace. Be Your Own Cheerleader is divided into three sections: Cultural, Psychological, and Spiritual. Each section is designed to give Asian and South Asian women different tools in their toolkit to be their own cheerleader at work.

As a US-born, cisgender, straight, Caucasian male, “Be Your Own Cheerleader” further opened my eyes to the struggles that Asian and South Asian people, particularly women, face - not only in the workplace - but in their day-to-day lives (especially as new or aspiring citizens in North America). As a people manager (as well as a husband, father, colleague and friend) it provided invaluable insights for me to apply in my interactions with those around me. It also inspired me to explore topics where my knowledge is limited. Finally, I found it to be practical source of guidance and support for my own concerns and dilemmas.
The author, Neelu Kaur, interweaves her journey as an “Indian-born, American-raised” woman & her experiences working as a coach, facilitator and mentor with detailed research to illustrate key points throughout. Kaur closes each chapter with “Deliberate Practice” – practical exercises that the reader can implement to develop their own path for the goals they wish to achieve. (As a personal bonus, each chapter starts with a thoughtful or inspiring quote from an icon in the field – I happen to love this technique, as it allows for some reflection and sets the tone for the chapter. But that’s just me. 😊)
While the book covers A LOT of ground in its three sections (Culture | Psychological | Spiritual), Kaur has done an excellent job making the concepts accessible to the reader. And the broad spectrum of content is intentional: Kaur encourages the reader to take a deeper dive on topics, and provides references and additional sources throughout. Absolutely worth your time!
For anyone who has struggled with self-doubt holding them back, this book provides an accessible game plan for becoming your biggest believer and loudest cheerleader. An energizing read that will inspire you to fearlessly chase your dreams.
What I was amazed about it the most is how I could relate with the author’s story about Asian and South Asian women being raised in a “we mentality”. I’m an East- European women living in NYC. I was also raised in a “we mentality”. It was very interesting to read about the similarities on challenges about separating the personal life from the family, and also being able to speak up as a woman in the American society.
I think, women and men from around the world can benefit from this book. Very enjoyable read, and what I liked the most is the examples of practices about how to be your own cheerleader on different topics.
Personally, I’m focusing on practicing “How to accept a compliment” that the author has a very good practical example of how to work with that specific topic.
Looking forward to study this book even more,
Thank you for sharing your life experiences Neelu.
Sabrina.
