Murder by the Book: Megan Clark Series, Book 5 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.1 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

In the midst of a bad drought, the shores of a local lake recede to reveal an old abandoned car. Megan is intrigued by the Depression-era jalopy and puzzled when her fellow amateur sleuths would rather get back to discussing Agatha Christie.

Then bodies start popping up all over town, ritually murdered, and current crimes take precedence over old secrets. It’s Megan who discovers the corpses, making her the prime suspect. To clear her name, she’ll need to find the killer - who’s obviously been boning up on Christie novels. Is Megan reading too much into clues, or could the culprit be a book club member?

This is the second book of the Megan Clark series I've read and it is very entertaining. The characters continue to develop since the first book and they keep holding my interest and make me want to read the next one. I like the setting along the old Route 66 highway as it passed through Amarillo. I love books that make the location almost a character in itself, and the author does it splendidly. From her John Lloyd Branson series and the Sheriff and the Panhandle Mysteries she makes me feel like I'm there and part of the story. Her books never disappoint.

Another great murder mystery by D R Meredith. I would have liked to give this book 5 stars. However, the horrible editing broke up the flow of the story. Words were left out of sentences and extra words were inserted that made no sense. In one chapter when Megan was interviewing Rosemary in two places she called Rosemary, Agnes! I am rather appalled that a book can be re-released in this day and age of technology with so MANY errors, even my Microsoft program shows me if a sentence does not make sense and I can change it. I read all of D R Meredith's books years ago in paperbacks and there were not the errors I experienced in the kindle edition.

I loved Schroeder and Jenner and Maximum Miller making appearances. Please write more! The inside jokes were pretty funny, too.

The story was entertaining, but I knew how the short story-in-a-story was going to play out. At first, I thought that the short story had been based on a true story. But then I came across wording in the book that was exactly the same as the short story that I had read decades ago.

I did some research and found the short story for sale at Amazon. The scenario was slightly changed from how it was told in the novel. I'm disappointed that the book doesn't acknowledge that part of it was previously published.

There's at least one other novel that has a story-in-a-story and I wonder if that's another "repurposed" short story.

I like her books, I find the plots well-thought-out and entertaining but not too demanding. However, the typesetting / editing is atrocious. Words run together: "away" instead of "a way." Bad word choices such as "collaborate" instead of "corroborate." "Prospective" when the word should be "perspective."

I find mistakes like these detract from the pleasure of reading a book. One or two are understandable, but I counted at least two dozen. Editing a book is the publisher's responsibility. An author cannot edit their own writing because he/she will often read what they meant instead of what they wrote.

I'm not likely to buy another book done by this publisher.
