- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2023This is the best biography I think I have ever read. Too bad they would not allow it in Texas schools. The reason Texas left Mexico, they , not Houston, wanted to keep slavery which Mexico had abolished in 1829.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2024This book is an excellent read. It's one of the best books about Houston and it's also in great condition and fast shipping.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2016Good biography of a person few people really know anything about.
This read almost like a novel or at least as much like a novel as a nonfiction book can, It is an older book so newer info on him has been discovered but still this book is worth reading
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2024I feel this was a good skin-deep review of the greatest of Texas statesmen. Perhaps Houston was so private that a deeper understanding of his motives is impossible to discover, but you won’t be disappointed with this book
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2013Sam, the American Renaissance man. Up close, personal. A history that reads like an adventure story. Because his life WAS an adventure story. So well crafted that we feel we know him intimately even though the writer delivers his story with absolute accuracy and historical facts devoid of sentimentality, he illustrates this complicated and remarkable man in a way that we feel we know him profoundly and as deeply as if he were our own brother.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2015I'm only a hundred but am already amazed at what I didn't learn in school. And I'm almost 80!
Guess what the kids in school TODAY don't learn. School systems today don't even teach the kids
who people like Sam Houston were. Or Folks like Andrew Jackson, (a real Jerk) or Daniel Boone,(a close friend of Houston).
Not the teachers fault!!! the" System". That's us. Anyhow, GOOD BOOK !
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2019Written in the late 1920s, the book gives a true historical picture without the political correctness we endure from other authors. I learned many things I did not know about my state.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great biography
Definitely the best biography I have read. What a man Houston was and if the book was a novel it would seem to unbelievable.
