Regardless of the media I include, my work always comes down to collage. Whether rendered in a 3-dimensional assemblage fashion, or a 2-D picture plane, my fascination begins with found papers. I see these items as a metaphor for our own lives, and seek to bring them together in a way that opens the viewer to a deeper experience of an overarching theme of personal redemption – where every part of who you are is embraced and nurtured. I call my process intuitive, but it all boils down to learning to trust and open oneself to the voice inside; the one that can guide creative decisions and bring about a much richer work of art then what skilled technique alone can do.

From obtaining gallery representation, to writing a book, to teaching workshops nationwide, and opening a studio in my own neighborhood, learning to tune in to the voice within has led me on a journey of learning “I can”; and I am delighted to share what I have learned in hopes that others will achieve an “I can” experience of their own.

I recently discovered Ms. Neubauer's work in one of my art magazines and was immediately connected to her choice of colors, use of materials, lovely compositions, and text to explain her process. I stopped reading the mag to find her book, which I've just finished on my iPad/Kindle. Stunning. In reading her book and studying her work, I see more clarity in my own style as I continue to grow as a new mixed-media artist.

Next steps? I'm sure I'd like to try adding encaustic to my technique. Have been tinkering with the idea; now, I'm ready!

Highly recommend to those studying collage composition. I have several art books focused on abstract and on mixed media. This is now in my top 3 favorites! Will be buying the print version for my go-to library and How-To workshops.

This book is well written and full of great information. The author shares her process and practical information on gathering, organizing and storing all the little bits used in collage. There is also an inspiration section that showcases other artists. Wish I could take a course with Crystal Neubauer. I love her art too.

This is the most complete book on collage I've ever seen and it is extremely well presented and organized. Each chapter provides extensive information, including the presentation of many valuable and relevant techniques. The chapter on composition is one that I found especially helpful. Although it approaches the basic principles and elements of design most artists are familiar with, Ms. Neubauer takes these concepts one step further by using the actual collage pieces to provide shape, line, movement, etc. Every step in the process of creating a fine piece of collage art is presented in detail, including a section on using encaustic methods to create collage.

Though most of this brief review has been about the content of the book, I want to emphasize that it is the most inspiring of the collage books I've seen. And if I were to have only one collage book, this is definitely the book I would choose.

This book provides lots of good ideas, but some of the actual descriptions are not totally clear. It remains a good source for ideas, inspiration, etc.

The Art of Expressive Collage includes instructions about techniques, which is what I needed as I had little experience in collage. Illustrations were good and I especially enjoyed seeing work of a variety of collage artists

I love Crystal Neubauer's work, and I waited a long time for this book to be available. It's visually impressive but surprisingly light on content. This is about half as much book as I would have expected, and much less how-to than It should be. Ms. Neubauer also uses a lot of space showing us other people's art without much comment. That's not what anyone who buys this book wants to see. I'm not thrilled that she advocates the use of toxic spray fixative without mentioning any safety precautions, but that's unfortunately pretty common with this type of book. Still, her enthusiasm for collage is apparent in this book, and we all need the inspiration she provides.
