A love letter to the amazing diversity of the nourishing, flavorful heritage dishes in the United States and around the world, featuring 80+ delicious, heathy recipes—from a registered dietitian and nutritionist

“I intend for this book to be your first step of many in decolonizing your plate, exploring your own cultural roots around food, welcoming heritage and traditional ways of eating into your home, and discovering the amazing flavors from cultures around the world.”—Maya Feller, from the Introduction

The typical American diet is heavy in added sugars, salts, and synthetic fats, but one-size-fits-all nutrition plans often leave us uninspired. There’s a more delicious way to eat sustainably and healthfully: by getting back to flavorful traditional cooking methods from cultures around the world, including the Caribbean, South America, Africa, the Mediterranean, and Asia.

Registered dietitian and nutritionist Maya Feller is known for her approachable, real-food-based solutions to making informed food choices that support health and longevity. In this deeply personal cookbook inspired by Maya’s childhood visits to her grandparents in Trinidad and Tobago and her family’s annual trips to the Caribbean and western Africa, she highlights nourishing dishes from around the world with a focus on whole and minimally processed ingredients. Maya shares realistic ways to think about how we relate to food, along with nutrition tips, plant-based substitutions, and meals that can be made in thirty minutes or less. She makes it easy to enjoy the vibrant flavors of your favorite cuisine with over eighty recipes for any meal of the day, including:

Sweet Potato and Leek Soup with Crispy Potato Skins from West Africa
Salted Cod from Trinidad & Tobago
Mezze: Cucumber Za’atar Salad, Olive Oil Labneh, and Olives from Lebanon
Pad See Ew with Chicken from Thailand
Cajun Gumbo from the American South
Pao de Queijo (Brazilian Cheese Bread) from Brazil

Featuring mouthwatering photography and insightful reflections on the evolution of global cuisines,
Eating from Our Roots offers an inclusive and diverse way to think about healthy eating and celebrates nourishing, flavorful dishes and the cultures they come from.

I think these recipes provide valuable information on how to eat foods that we don't necessarily encounter in American culture unless. We are learning to value and enjoy foods, spices and cooking methods from peoples of diverse cultures. The thing I love most is the fact that Maya has taken those home-grown recipes and uses ingredients which are more nutritious and healthy without loosing taste and provides texture. My only complaint is the fact that that I ordered the Kindle version and I found that the format is not user friendly; I will not do that again. That may not be the best format for cookbooks and I will order them all via hard copies in the future. If not for this issue, my rating would have been higher.

I’d love to get this book. I saw it at promoted on tv. I love the thought of health inspired recipes from around the world. But $25 is a lot for a cookbook right now. Plus a lot of the ingredients are not typical pantry items. So there’s even more cost for items you might not use often or at all. I feel this healthy cook book targets a higher income bracket, even though the author spoke on tv about healthy diets in lower income areas. Maybe it would be a good idea to write a book with healthy lower cost dishes for families on a budget. And not a book that costs $25. For now, the book is in my cart. Until I get an Amazon gift card.

It’s a general cookbook that tries to be generally healthy. The first recipe I looked at called for a 15 pound chicken.. ummm. I don’t think I’ll be able to locate one at the grocery.. but if the first recipe I look at has such an obvious error. I don’t have high hopes for the recipes in general

"This book will give you a test of traditionally inspired and heritage recipes from around the world (p. 23)." This is very true. Written by registered dietitian, Maya Feller, this book challenges Western ideals of healthy meals to include those from non-Western cultures. The introduction has great explanations of food and connections to health. I particularly enjoyed the explanations of spices and how to use them. There are 5 sections: Porridge, toasta and baked goods; Soups curries, and stews; Plant forward; Fish; and Meat. Each recipe tells the reader/cook where it comes from with a brief note about it. The recipes have several ingredients, but the cooking methods aren't terribly complicated.
The reason I can't give it 5 starts is because the font choices make it difficult to read. Some colors don't have enough contrast with the white paper to read easily and the title font has a thickness about it that makes it hard to read. This book is a great addition for folks looking to expand their healthy meals repertoire.
