"It is increasingly clear that misinformation poses a threat to every pillar of society, but the stakes are especially high in medicine. With refreshing clarity, Dead Wrong spotlights the challenges of separating fact from fiction when it comes to our healthcare. Dr. Geeta Nayyar isn't satisfied with simply defining the problem. She merges her clinical experience and boardroom expertise along with her team's journalistic skills to offer practical solutions and chart a better path forward. Healthcare and policy leaders would be wise to take note."

"Misinformation, or downright lies, are undermining so many important conversations we need to be having in this country about how to make policy decisions that are critical to our quality of life. Nowhere is there more harmful than in healthcare where lives are quite literally at stake, particularly in our most vulnerable communities. Fight disinformation by being informed—start with this great book that gets inside how myths and lies cause harm and give us the facts we need to fight back."

—ANA NAVARRO, Political Commentator and Strategist

"Finally, a no-nonsense wake-up call to combat the epidemic of misinformation in American healthcare. In Dead Wrong, Dr. Geeta Nayyar fearlessly tackles this pervasive problem with unapologetic fervor and characteristic grace, exposing the devastating impact of falsehoods on our well-being. This book is an urgent rallying cry for us all to take control of our health and dismantle the web of deceit that has entangled healthcare for decades. Brace yourself for a heavy dose of truth and an honest look in the mirror."

—ARIANNA HUFFINGTON, Founder and CEO, Thrive Global

"In Dead Wrong, Dr. Geeta Nayyar takes an intimate and moving look at misinformation, disinformation, and their striking effects on the U.S. healthcare system. She also points to solutions, which are too often absent from the conversation. This must-read book is an urgent call to action for everyone who works in healthcare or cares about the future our children will inherit."

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

What can healthcare do when patients believe rumors and lies rather than doctors, researchers, and public health officials?

That question is at the heart of Dead Wrong: Diagnosing and Treating Healthcare's Misinformation Illness, a roadmap for healthcare leaders to understand and address the effects of the conspiracy theory and conjecture that have taken the health of the nation hostage, a phenomenon that began long before social media and COVID-19 and is sure to outlast both.

In the book, physician and healthcare-technology expert Geeta Nayyar reveals how misinformation and disinformation are leading Americans down a dangerous path. She shows why healthcare leaders must intervene and what steps they can take to secure the health of their patients and organizations.

As Dr. G reflects on her experiences in the exam room and the boardroom, she teams up with former journalists to gather insights from contemporary academic research and the world's foremost experts on medical misinformation. Through rich storytelling and rigorous reporting, the book exposes misinformation as a growing threat to individual health, organizational imperatives such as clinician recruitment and retention and care quality, and the U.S. healthcare system itself.

But Dead Wrong doesn't merely describe the problem. Its pages offer invaluable glimpses of real-world solutions spanning new clinical approaches, artificial intelligence, digital health, social media, marketing, and public policy.

Together, these bright spots offer everyone―from healthcare administrators and clinicians to technologists and marketers―the opportunity to ensure truth and health define the post-pandemic world.

Easy to read, digest, and understand. A page turner that peels back the onion of the complexities of the US health care system, the ease of propagating misinformation—consciously or not— and how to drive awareness and create real change.

Dr. Nayyar does an amazing job describing the underlying mechanics and powerful impact that misinformation and disinformation can have on the delivery of healthcare, both at a global level and an individual level. Being on the frontline myself and having experienced this impact first-hand, I can sincerely say that Dr. Nayyar does a masterful job of asking and answering to most pertinent questions surrounding this "pandemic within the pandemic". Every person should read this book, so that you are better armed to protect your health and those that you love from the negative impact of medical misinformation and disinformation.

If only every American read this book. "Dead Wrong" blew me away—the authors connect the dots among so many categories of medical misinformation, using powerful anecdotes and interviews with stars in the field to make sense of such a damaging, pervasive problem. You'll come away feeling armed for the next time someone confronts you with a dangerous delusion about health. This is one of those books that absorbs you and you look up and realize you just powered through 50 pages. Highly recommend.

This book was a real eye opener and more people need to read it. Dr G shared her heart felt experience of how mis-information prevented saving so many individual lives when AIDS first came out, and then the worse distribution of mis-information when COVID-19 hit the world and the reluctancy of so many to take the vaccine and/or wear masks.

Some key phrases that I appreciated are:
“False news stories travel six times faster and are 70 percent more likely to be retweeted than true stories.”

“The platforms “reward” people for habitually sharing content that engages other users and thus earns them social recognition.”

“The US healthcare system is overinvested in curative care and underinvested in prevention.”

“Helping people achieve health requires meeting them where they are, showing them respect, and sharing information in ways that resonate.”

“Real‐time insights enabled health systems to launch large‐scale interventions and engage at‐risk individuals before a crisis emerged.”

However a couple points that I think was missed in the book that perhaps a 2nd book can tackle.
These points are around the lack of trust root causes. One is the pharmaceutical industry and investors who get rich while it seems many western doctors are more likely to write a prescription instead of advising on homeopathic methods, which insurance companies have been slow to support, too much FDA involvement with low risk treatments? The second is for those who are all so familiar with improper diagnosis that have occurred and led to deaths. None of which were intentional but people can be naive and expect doctors to fix all of their problems with a shot or pill when they need to be their own advocate and perform a bit of research themselves and seek out second opinions. Doctors are human and sometimes have many patients with unique situations with only symptoms being treated but not the root cause of unhealthy life styles.

Geeta Nayyar masterfully combines narrative storytelling with deep expertise, creating a compelling guide through the intricacies of navigating information in the US healthcare system. With a keen eye for detail, she unravels complex concepts, shedding light on identifying and steering through misinformation. In an era where accurate information is paramount, this book provides valuable insights, empowering readers to make informed decisions. This an essential read for anyone seeking to optimize health and traverse the labyrinthine world of healthcare with confidence and clarity.

Dr. G addresses a very important topic in a way that is easily accessible and understandable. Learning about the importance of re-building trust in the medical profession has really helped me as a medical student.

Thank you, Dr. G, for providing the thorough history we need to accurately diagnose and treat the misinformation crisis. Misinformation can come from mainstream media and other trusted sources when new science is emerging and we don’t yet have all the answers – as we saw during the early AIDS crisis and of course the COVID-19 pandemic. Then it gets amplified on social media.

I love how Dr. G calls on clinicians to step into their power, to knock down inaccurate information and lift up valid science. My view is that we also need patients, survivors, and caregivers to step into their power, too. These groups can work together as people go out on the hunt for information online.

She calls for increased education about health literacy -- yes, that's essential. Another key is access. We should have open access to medical research so that the best, most up to date science can be shared by everyone.

This is a book for those who are rooting for the truth (a phrase I'm quoting from page 116 :) Kudos to the team who produced it and may your messages be heard.

Pretty refreshing! As someone with 15 years of experience in health technology, I approached this book with skepticism, but Dr. Geeta's evidence-based approach dismantles assumptions and generalizations, shedding light on the multifaceted nature of misinformation.

What sets this book apart is its comprehensive coverage of various categories and sources of misinformation in healthcare. Dr. Geeta's meticulous research and analysis offer readers a deeper understanding of how healthcare is perceived, managed, and delivered.

The book is quite lengthy (for my taste), yet undeniably valuable.
