Self-Advocacy for Higher Education: A Step by Step Guide to Preparing to Request Accommodations in College Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

Self-Advocacy for Higher Education: A Step-by-Step Guide to Preparing to Request Accommodations in College© guides students with learning disabilities (SLDs) to prepare to self-disclose their disability in college and get the accommodations they need.

However, most students with learning disabilities (SLDs) lack the knowledge, self-awareness, and information about their learning disability to speak about it and provide the information college accessibility staff need.

It's not their fault. It's not taught, emphasized, or talked about in K-12, leaving students unprepared to advocate for their disability.

It's unfortunate, unnecessary, and, worst of all, avoidable.

This book corrects all of that in a simple-to-follow, structured method

Ideal for parents, students, and educators, this book transforms

◆SLDs into knowledgeable, self-aware self-advocates.

◆SLDs discuss their disability and academic needs with confidence and clarity.

Parents get a structured method by which they can transition from being the primary advocate while assisting their students in developing the skills and knowledge to improve personal responsibility and independence.

Help them prepare for their first step into adulthood.

Give them the tools they need to do it.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Hi, I wrote this book to fill the gap left by K-12 for students with learning disabilities heading to college. Many in special education talk about the importance of self-advocacy, but few, if any, provide a method for students to learn it. Even fewer focus on what is necessary for self-advocacy in college. I wrote this book to provide a simple, easy-to-follow method that transforms college-bound students with learning disabilities into self-aware, knowledgeable self-advocates.

Parents now have a simple, easy-to-follow method to transition their young adult into taking responsibility for their learning disability and accessibility needs. Parents can confidently transition out of being the main advocate while their student transitions into a new role. At the end is a young adult that is fully aware of their disability, what they need, and can speak about it confidently.

Perfect for parents of students with learning disabilities, special education teachers, school counselors, students with learning disabilities considering post secindary college or training, and students participating in IEP meeitngs (13+).

This book is a really effective resource for parents, students, and anyone who is working closely with a pending college student with disabilities. It contains a lot of valuable knowledge around disability laws, as well as what documents students/parents should be gathering before starting college (to begin the process for accommodations). Overall I will absolutely use this book in my therapy practice as a way to help clients advocate for themselves when moving on to higher education.
