Top of Scope: The Emergency Department Physical Therapist Practice Handbook Paperback – January 11, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
complicated hub serving patients at some of their most vulnerable moments. Physical
therapists can, and should, play a critical role in that service. Commonly the missing
piece an emergency department didn’t know it was missing, a physical therapist can
skillfully integrate into a patient’s pathway through the department all the while
improving everything from throughput, to opioid use, to patient satisfaction.
Aimed primarily at physical therapists and with an abundance of inspiring anecdotes
from the field, Dr. Rebekah Griffith takes you through:
• The best research on WHY a physical therapist increases efficiency, saves money,
and improves patient outcomes in the emergency department
• Step-by-step HOW to get started planning, preparing, and implementing your
practice
• WHAT to do to track, grow, and support your practice with ample resources and
connections
By the end of Top of Scope, you will not only have actionable strategies to start your
own emergency department physical therapist practice, but also leave with a renewed
belief in the power of therapeutic rapport and its ability to change the trajectory of a
patient’s health journey.
“To really explore all facets of the human experience, there

I have been in the past and likely will be an Emergency Department patient in the future. The premise of this book is intriguing. When we, the collective patients, are pushed by our heath insurance and healthcare system to utilize the Emergency Department/Urgent Care facilities as the first step to get attention, then the ED will become more important to each and every American patient. With the ED becoming a more primary step in our daily healthcare, we need practitioners who think outside of the box, especially for musculoskeletal and neurological assessments, to provide the right care for the right situation.
Dr. Griffith makes a strong case for more physical therapists in emergency departments. This was an intriguing read and my hope is that more emergency departments consult with Dr. Griffith to successfully deploy PTs in the ED.
