Trapped in the Family Business, Second Edition: A Practical Guide to Uncovering and Managing This Hidden Dilemma Paperback – June 10, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
Based on interviews with family business members, owners, and their advisors, Trapped in the Family Business sheds light on this common yet unexplored issue and offers solutions for how to manage it. In the expanded second edition to this practical guide, Dr. Michael Klein shares research findings, insights, and how to avoid this challenging and complex situation.
While most family business books focus on the family system as a whole, this unique guide was written for one person - the family member who knows that something isn't working for them (or worse) and their needs and interests don't align with those of the family business.
A serious problem that can lead to broken relationships, depression, anxiety, and even substance abuse, feeling out of place or frustrated in a family business is far from unique. This book addresses the problem and doesn't shy away from looking at the causes.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2014I have consulted with hundreds of family businesses over the past two decades. I wish I would have had access to this book earlier in my career. The dynamics of a family business are so complex and this book highlights how easily family businesses can become prisons to those that work in them. It provides great psychological insight about how people get trapped and this was fascinating to me. More importantly, it provides practical, straightforward advice for improving the situation which I have not found in other similar type books. I recommend this book to family business owners who are feeling trapped or worried about their kids getting trapped in the business. It is a quick read and well worth your time.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2020As someone who has navigated an exit from a family business, I can say this book offers a wonderful overview of the symptoms, causes, and fixes for an issue that surprisingly gets little coverage in the business world. It certainly helped me diagnose the problems I was experiencing and steered me toward an effective way of working through them. A big thanks to Dr. Michael Klein for delivering clarity, understanding and hope.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2020Great advice for family members who want to be involved as an owner but not be actively involved in running the business
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2012there is no real depth here with how to deal with situations. A little dissappointing for what I was looking for
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2020This book is like a blueprint for my life. Having escaped my own family business, I can tell you that my life has forever change for the better. There is so much helpful information inside this book to guide me along the way. highly recommended for anybody who is considering leaving the family business or who is already in the process of making the jump.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2020Michael’s understanding of the specific dynamics that present themselves when working in a family business is apparent. His observations and applicable directives are both profound and actionable. I strongly recommend this book for anyone that is or knows someone that is trying to navigate the unique landscape that is working in a family business. It is excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gives clear overview how complicated this relationship really is!
Easy to understand, this book asks you the right questions and can help you get more objective about your own situation and position in the family business. It also helps you understand the other (parents) side more as well as lets you know that you are not alone in this situation. There are so many others who feel the same and that it is okay to feel this way. To me this was the most important aspect of the book.
