About the authors
I love writing books and articles that help people and organizations deal more effectively with the many challenges and changes life brings. I spent some time as a college professor, and I enjoy reading academic research and figuring out how to explain it so it is useful for my readers. In addition, I enjoy sailing, reading, photography, music, and travel.
A passionate disability advocate, certified leadership coach, and proud mother of three adult children (including one with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy), Kris has spent more than 25 years helping individuals and organizations build resilience and create more joy-filled lives. She is a sought-after podcast guest and community thought-leader who regularly advocates at the state and federal level in support of individuals with disabilities and their families. Kris co-founded a nonprofit that provides free vocational training to young adults with disabilities after high school, along with two municipal commissions to improve access and inclusion in Connecticut.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2024Practical and heartfelt advice, chock full of resources, and written by someone with real-life experiences.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2024Kris Burbanks’ EMBRACING ANOTHER NORMAL offers insight and perspective for families and professionals who want to understand the journey of the alphabet soup of special needs. (IEPS, PPTS, SLPS, OTS, PTS). Her warmth and intelligence shine brightly in her page turning saga. I bought 5 copies to share with colleagues. Her message is that important!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2024I found this book to be very helpful and was particularly drawn to the numerous first hand accounts of the unique challenges associated with parenting a special needs child. Most helpful to me were the frameworks which helped bring the advice and suggestions to life. The book was very well done and will be a significant resource for families with special needs.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2024I have no doubts that the book will help so many people…including those who do not know someone with special needs. I say that because as I was reading it, I thought about a number of people in my life who struggle with resilience and would benefit from reading the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2023This is a fantastic read, full of real-life anecdotes from parents and the authors. Co-author Kris Burbank shares a wonderful mix of insight as a parent who has navigated so many real-life scenarios with her son, Andrew, and practical, day-to-day strategies that relate to marriage, family wellbeing and even sibling relationships. The best part of the book for me was hearing how Kris carved out a life of her own with the encouragement of her kids and husband while also assuring her son's successful trajectory. Highly recommend! Of course, as a staff person at Chapel Haven Schleifer Center, I might be considered biased but I was still glued to the book! Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2023You can't separate the personal from the professional, even when you try. Otherwise, you're not bringing the best of yourself to either. Today, Linda Hoopes announced the publication of the first of a new series of books. "Embracing Another Normal: Resilience Stories and Strategies for Raising Children With Disabilities," authored by Kris Burbank and Linda shares so many of the lessons I have had to learn as the single father of a disabled (now adult) son, and offers others that I can now learn from the experience of other parents. Thank you both for this incredible resource!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2024Great message and practical advice for navigating the world of parenting a child with special needs. From simple, to complex tasks, the book outlines essential framework for moving forward with grace, and most of all acceptance. Real life examples help underscore the struggles and challenges and put the lessons to practice.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2024The authors provide great advice and anecdotes that truly help you understand and connect. I would recommend this book for anyone with a child/adult with disabilities and for friends/family members of someone who has. Written by amazing women!
Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that will genuinely change lives
This is the book I longed for when my son, James, was small. James is autistic and our life has certainly not been what I had excitedly anticipated when I fell pregnant. Navigating life with a child who has complex needs felt so far from normal. This book helps you reframe your thoughts as well as delivering practical advice around curating your ‘normal’. At last - a book written by two incredible women who truly ‘get it’. If you have a child with additional needs, or you want to support someone who has, DO buy this book - it’s a game changer.
