- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2022So interesting, Voskamp's first two books impacted me deeply. I have read them both multiple times and have purchased many copies. This book does not feel like the same universality or connectivity. It invites the reader into the recent part of Ann's life, struggles, and growth. It addresses marriage, love, adoption, and relationships. It offers a way to frame and evaluate the days similar to the examen. I do recommend it, but I think it will hit different people in different places. Sometimes a book connects with you at just the right time. I felt that on one hand the reader is invited into the intimate and sometimes uncomfortable while at the same time keeps the reader at arms' length and other times felt formulaic. I am thankful for Voskamp's vulnerability and humility. I appreciate her heart and the willingness to share her story. It is a worthwhile read and I do recommend it, but I do not think it is for everyone.
Disclaimer: I did receive the first three chapters to review but have since read through the entire book and have been processing my opinion since completing.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2022I just read the most vulnerable AND the most beautiful book that I have ever read – a book that took my breath away – even more beautiful than Ann Voskamp’s bestseller, One Thousand Gifts. Waymaker: Finding the Way to the Life You’ve Always Dreamed Of is a love story – a love story between Ann and her husband, Darryl – a love story between Ann and God and Darryl – a love story between Ann and her adopted daughter, Shiloh Shalom – a love story filled with broken hearts – a love story overflowing with healing from the Waymaker.
Voskamp begins her love story journey in a stormy sea. Disappointment crashes in on her. Heartbroken husband, adopted daughter facing another heart surgery, and Voskamp in heart failure, she finds her way back to the SACRED, the Waymaker.
She examines the marriage relationship between a man and a woman with the relationship that God cherishes with His people. Similarly, she sees her adopted daughter through the eyes of God and sees herself as His adopted daughter.
“Marriage isn’t about always being happy – marriage is about always growing in the right direction. Life isn’t about avoiding trauma and suffering: life is about growing through it” (p. 329).
The book takes the reader deeper into the heart of Hebrew culture and language and offers a SACRED pattern of thinking that may transform your life. I appreciated learning from the Scripture as she took us on her journey.
Voskamp approaches the Red Sea with Moses and the Israelites. She watches God part the waters of her Red Sea. She steps onto the dry land of the Red Sea Road and takes us by the hand as we walk together between the high waters. We reach the other side, as the soldiers of bondage follow on the road. God dashes the sea upon them, drowning slavery.
And we journey on.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2022I was attracted to this book because I have read Ann Voskamp for about ten years, both her books and her blog. I always look forward to reading new words from her.
This book was about - In Waymaker, Ann speaks of how we can move forward in our lives when our expectations don’t turn out as we thought life would. We have a Waymaker who generously shows us signposts in our journey to help us get back to the path.
Things I liked about this book - Ann’s writing is beautiful and captivating. She draws you into her heart and her life. In following her blog, I thought I knew what was happening in her life the last few years. But I only knew the surface. In the book, Ann shares the true story of these years in a vulnerable and transparent manner. But throughout the story, she shows how the ‘Waymaker’ placed signposts and miracles into the journey that eventually brought to a place of more than she had dreamed.
Why you should read this book - If you have lost the path and your world is tumbling around, the Waymaker will bring you new hope there is someone who will direct your way.
This book lived up to the back cover copy - The information provides you with a great introduction to the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest & Beautifully Written
Ann Voskamp's book WayMaker is beautifully written and a valuable contribution to the Christian Living genre. I lingered over each chapter and learned much about how God not only made a way for His people out of Egypt but how our trust and drawing close to Him help us have peace in knowing He is our WayMaker too.
Ann was honest--deeply honest--about her life and this drew me in like a romantic suspense novel always does. (I cheated for the first time in my life while reading a book and read the last chapter part way through so I wouldn't keep staying up so late to find out what happens.) Even with the self-induced spoiler, I loved every page of this book. Yes, it could have been written at a slightly faster pace. But fans of Ann aren't interested in a sprint, we look forward to a leisurely visit that inspires us to dig deep into our relationship with God and others. I wouldn't change a thing. Thank you, dear Ann. This was beautifully done.

4.0 out of 5 stars fascinating book
Hearing her story was fascinating and she is a great speaker. I do however find her writing style really unusual and quite hard work to follow.
It’s a shame the research on attachment is misleading so many people… perhaps more so on the USA. It’s only a theory and usually children have strong bounds with three or four people not just one. That’s why it’s so important dads are hands on from the day of the birth. I think Ann’s struggle was made worse by this inaccurate information she was told and read.
