About the author
Scott Hofmann proudly served as an Assistant Scout Master in charge of the local Boy Scout troop’s High Adventure program. He took his sons and daughter on many adventures throughout the mid-west ranging from hiking the Pictured Rocks, canoeing the Boundary Waters in Minnesota and Canada, sailing in the Caribbean and Florida keys, and rafting the Arkansas river in Colorado. The banter and conversations from his kids and their friends, combined with his own misguided youth experiences, contributed to the young-adult experiences and conversations in his writing.
Scott has traveled the world and lived in Turkey for three years. Krav Maga was a big part of Scott’s training regimen to help him write better fight scenes. When he is not traveling, he lives vicariously through his characters.
Michigan State University is Scott’s alma mater, where he earned an engineering degree. Aside from his thirty years of computer software industry experience, he started up and managed a distressed real estate hedge fund and earned two US patents.
Scott is married and has three children. Best friend to a dog.

Parts I found memorable:
-"Set your will and welcome the cold unstoppable power of self-discipline. Eliminate the option in your mind of not doing what must be done."
-"Her mouth was open, frozen, like she was trapped in a scream."
-"Officer Erickson found a long two-track, dirt road containing more mud puddles than dirt. After a rough ride that likely reduced the lifespan of the van..."
-"Genesis 1:26-31 says God made you in God's image and you are good. Who am I to argue with God? I don't think your future should be set based on a single poor decision made in your youth."
-"People tended to expect mediocrity from [Colin]. They made excuses for Colin's expected failure. They say things like, 'it's probably not for you,' or 'this might be better for you.'"
This book is openly Christian, which I love. Even if you're not Christian, still read this. There are moments where it preaches, but it is not pushy. The wilderness survival aspects are quite realistic, and so are the combat scenes. I solidly recommend this for teens and up. And if there's a book two, I will definitely buy it.
We have two protagonists sharing the limelight in this book. We start with Avery, introduced as young teen girl, who by all accounts has a good family and life, which comes crashing down because of a crime syndicate's vendetta toward her father. The other character, Colin, is off to a rough start in his teens, but mostly due to circumstances outside his control and his inability to deal with them in a civil way. Both these characters need the same things: Discipline, and mentorship.
The protagonists face many challenges in this book, making for a solid foundation in a thriller story. The obstacles to be overcome consist of external forces, environmental forces and, most importantly, internal forces that lead to satisfying character development.
I won't get into the specifics of the story, as to avoid spoilers, but things do ramp up in short order and the pacing goes hard throughout.
NOTE:
This book does contain numerous religious themes stemming from Christianity, but I think most people with an open mind are going to be happy with how it is handled. You will never feel preached to or judged by the author for not sharing their views. While the story is told, and lessons imparted, from a faith-based point of view, it is something that can also be appreciated by both secularists and other religious non-Christians alike.
Overall, this is a very easy recommendation.
