Karen Pryor’s clear and entertaining explanation of behavioral training methods made Don’t Shoot the Dog a bestselling classic with revolutionary insights into animal—and human—behavior.

In her groundbreaking approach to improving behavior, behavioral biologist Karen Pryor says, “Whatever the task, whether keeping a four-year-old quiet in public, housebreaking a puppy, coaching a team, or memorizing a poem, it will go fast, and better, and be more fun, if you know how to use reinforcement.”

Now Pryor clearly explains the underlying principles of behavioral training and reveals how this art can be applied to virtually any common situation. And best of all, she tells how to do it without yelling threats, force, punishment, guilt trips—or shooting the dog. From the eight methods for putting an end to all kinds of undesirable behavior to the ten laws of “shaping” behavior, Pryor helps you combat your own addictions and deal with such difficult problems as a moody spouse, an impossible teen, or an aged parent. Plus, there’s also incredibly helpful information on house training the dog, improving your tennis game, keeping the cat off the table, and much more!

“In the course of becoming a renowned dolphin trainer, Karen Pryor learned that positive reinforcement…is even more potent that prior scientific work had suggested…Don’t Shoot the Dog looks like the very best on the subject—a full-scale mind-changer” (The Coevolution Quarterly). Learn why pet owners rave, “This book changed our lives!” and how these pioneering techniques can work for you, too.

Karen Pryor is a behavioral biologist with an international reputation in marine mammal biology and behavioral psychology. She is a founder and leading proponent of “clicker training,” a training system based on operant conditioning (isolate wanted behaviors and ignore the unwanted) and the all-positive methods developed by marine mammal trainers. Pryor is the CEO of KCPT/Sunshine Books, Inc., a publishing, training product, and online company. In addition to her bestselling Don’t Shoot the Dog, Pryor wrote Nursing Your Baby (more than 2 million copies in print) along with several other books and many scientific papers and popular articles on learning and behavior. She has three grown children and lives in Boston with two clicker-trained dogs and a clicker-trained cat.

Karen Pryor is a behavioral biologist with an international reputation in two fields, marine mammal biology and behavioral phsychology. She is a founder and leading proponent of "clicker training," a training system based on operant conditioning (isolate wanted behaviors and ignore the unwanted) and the all-positive methods developed by marine mammal trainers. Very fun and easy read

I've read this book three times. It contains so much practical knowledge that most people would benefit from. It's very useful in animal training, but has just as much to say about how to change your own behaviors. It helped me realize that everyone has unconscious theories about how to change behaviors in themselves and others, and most of them are wrong! Taking a hard look at the research, and running it through the sieve of years of application and practice in the field, Pryor offers a compelling manual to behavioral psychology, full of concise theory that clarifies common errors and shows the simpler path to change. It's a great book and an easy read. Well worth checking out and revisiting often. I'd trust this stuff over the superstitious content of most animal training guides any day!

I love the book and it gave me lots of information to help with continuing my dog training journey. The front of the book did have a few rips and some ridges that shouldn’t have been like that as I ordered it new.

When I want to learn to do something I know nothing about, I better go to an expert. There isn't anybody better in the field of training animals through operant conditioning than Karen Pryor. What’s more this book is easy to read and the steps and processes are easy to follow.
Karen Pryor has made a convert out of me to use positive training on my dogs

This book is awesome sauce! It’s a great introduction to why & how positive reinforcement works the best. Everyone wants to be acknowledged & get something positive for their actions. Animals are no different. And they do so many things for us why shouldn’t they get their share for what they do? They earned it didn’t they. I only wish I’d known many of these things when I was raising my kids- things could’ve gone alot smoother! But no worries- we can always start now & improve our current relationships! Buy the book- it’s its own reward!

My vet suggested I get this for training my dog, so I did. Although the book was interesting, it almost gave me more insight on how to train my husband and kids. Haha The context was also way too advanced and “deep thinking” for what it was. If you’re getting this book to learn the basics of training and caring for your dog, don’t. If you’re getting it for learning how to train the people around you using different training tactics, with a very heavy, psychology-based text, then you’ll love it.

Side note: the ONE part I did find interesting was how there really isn’t one training method that works. Positive reinforcement is typically what you should use 90% of the time but she has categories for different types of training which include negative and punishment based. I found this interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overarching training concepts
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 16, 2021
I was surprised when this book turned up. It was small, had no pictures and looked a bit boring...then I read it. And reread it. And then bought it for everyone I knew. This book taught me so much more than I would learn from a step by step guide to teaching your dog to sit and fetch. Once you understand the power of positive reinforcement and how to use it well (easy enough for a child to learn) you can apply it to any living thing: dog, human, horse, anything. Some of the terms used to describe disabled people are outdated and dolphin training is no longer in vogue (it was written in the 1980s) but this shouldn’t detract from the core brilliance of the book as a conceptual whole.
