GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK

"The Change is like a guttural rage scream (and somehow a soft, tearful hug) of a book, and I couldn't have loved it any more." --Emily Henry

Big Little Lies meets The Witches of Eastwick—a gloriously entertaining and knife-sharp revenge fantasy about three women whose midlife crisis brings unexpected new powers—putting them on a collision course with the evil that lurks in their wealthy beach town.

"A roar of rage, a pacy page-turner, I loved it with all my broken heart. Read it. You’ll love it."--New York Times bestselling author Marian Keyes

"Miller triumphs...THE CHANGE is that rare treat: a suspenseful story with great pacing, memorable characters, and an engaging voice. Fantastic in every way, this fierce anthem against misogyny is a smash."--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"A pointed, punchy, and potent thriller...wry and clever, serious and exacting, and masterfully suspenseful."--Booklist (starred review)

In the Long Island oceanfront community of Mattauk, three different women discover that midlife changes bring a whole new type of empowerment…

After Nessa James’s husband dies and her twin daughters leave for college, she’s left all alone in a trim white house not far from the ocean. In the quiet of her late forties, the former nurse begins to hear voices. It doesn’t take long for Nessa to realize that the voices calling out to her belong to the dead—a gift she’s inherited from her grandmother, which comes with special responsibilities.

On the cusp of 50, suave advertising director Harriett Osborne has just witnessed the implosion of her lucrative career and her marriage. She hasn’t left her house in months, and from the outside, it appears as if she and her garden have both gone to seed. But Harriett’s life is far from over—in fact, she’s undergone a stunning and very welcome metamorphosis.

Ambitious former executive Jo Levison has spent thirty long years at war with her body. The free-floating rage and hot flashes that arrive with the beginning of menopause feel like the very last straw—until she realizes she has the ability to channel them, and finally comes into her power.

Guided by voices only Nessa can hear, the trio of women discover a teenage girl whose body was abandoned beside a remote beach. The police have written the victim off as a drug-addicted sex worker, but the women refuse to buy into the official narrative. Their investigation into the girl’s murder leads to more bodies, and to the town’s most exclusive and isolated enclave, a world of stupendous wealth where the rules don’t apply. With their newfound powers, Jo, Nessa, and Harriett will take matters into their own hands…

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of May 2022: For every woman who’s ever been ignored, underestimated, or talked over, you need to read The Change. Described as “Big Little Lies meets The Witches of Eastwick,” with, we think, a tiny pinch of The First Wives Club thrown in for good measure, this epic, boo-yah revenge fantasy centers on three woman “of a certain age” who find that while their estrogen may be declining, the other “gifts” that arrived with menopause are surging, giving them the kind of super powers that can take on whoever is killing young women in their affluent neighborhood. Have your highlighter finger ready, because Miller has packed this novel with the kind of pithy, quotable, laugh-out-loud zingers that belong on fridge magnets everywhere. To misquote Dylan, The Change is gonna come, and evil better be ready. —Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Editor

"A pointed, punchy, and potent thriller...wry and clever, serious and exacting, and masterfully suspenseful." — Booklist (starred review)

“The novel takes on serious issues but doesn’t take itself too seriously; there’s plenty of mordant humor, a suspenseful plot, and mostly brisk pacing. Crime fiction, superpower fantasy, and sharp satire about sexism and ageism mesh for a satisfying read.” — Kirkus Reviews

"A delicious fantasy full of righteous rage, thorny entanglements, powerful sisterhood, and (wink, nudge) herbal remedies. Forget the teen dabblers of The Craft, or the lovelorn witches of Practical Magic: Joe, Nessa, and Harriet are the dynamic coven that angry feminist dreams are made of, here to remind us that everything gets better with age and experience— especially revenge." — Kat Rosenfield, author of No One Will Miss Her

“Searing and witty and full of so much warranted rage. This was a book I didn’t know I was aching for. I cheered on every page.” — Erin A. Craig, New York Times bestselling author of House of Salt and Sorrows and Small Favors

"A roar of rage, a pacy page-turner, I loved it with all my broken heart. Read it. You’ll love it."
Marian Keyes, New York Times bestselling author

"There is a specter haunting women - the specter of rage. Kirsten Miller has woven a fun, gripping, lush, real fable, a Stepford Wives for the twenty-first century, a Witches of Eastwick if it had actually been written by a woman. THE CHANGE is poisonous as henbane, and twice as delicious." — Katherine Howe, New York Times bestselling author

Kirsten Miller grew up in a small town in the mountains of North Carolina. At seventeen, she left for college in New York City, where she lives to this day. Kirsten's latest novel, Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books, is a side-splitting satire that takes on some of the most controversial issues of our day. Her first adult novel, The Change, was a Good Morning America Book Club pick for May 2022. Kirsten is also the author of over a dozen middle grade and YA novels, including the acclaimed Kiki Strike books, (which tell the tale of the delinquent girl geniuses who keep Manhattan safe), and How to Lead a Life of Crime. She is not the Kirsten Miller who wrote All That Is Left (which sometimes appears on the list of the books she's written), but she assumes that Kirsten is lovely and talented.

Every woman should read this book- and every man should read it and take notice. I was riveted from the first page. The Change is a testament to the power of nature, justice, and the strength of women. I was prepared for a murder mystery, a ghost story, or even a tale of revenge. The Change was this and more — it was a glorious reckoning and a scream into the void for every woman who has society has disregarded or discarded.

“And that was when Nessa realized she’d been wrong about him.” -lots of melodramatic lines like this in the book. This is not a direct quote but you get it. It didn’t feel like a waste to have read the story as it was very interesting and creative but the pace of the story wasn’t steady.

The first few chapters had me hooked. Three women banding together to use their talents to stop criminals, yes please! But as the book went on I just felt like it was flat. There was no suspense or dramatic build at all. The ending was boring. I just felt like the concept had so much potential that the book never lived up to.

While this is an improbable revenge fantasy, there are a few good twists and the final villain is a great surprise, so it is worth slogging through

I had no idea what to expect when I picked up this book. I usually steer clear of book club picks, but this was a pure delight. A fantasy book written for every woman who has to navigate the world as it is today. Transformation, justice, and sisterhood fill the pages. Not to be missed!

I really enjoyed this book. Especially the focus on the power of older women and the vulnerability of young girls.
The interpersonal relationships between the women were interesting; their conversations thought provoking
I didn’t enjoy the relationships of the various men. The unfairness of power can be a reminder of how frustrating being a woman can be in dealing with a lot of men. Especially in men dominated industries. The good old boy club is still very much alive

I ended up really liking this book. I love how it is centred about three women and their individual and shared journeys. Some parts at the beginning seemed a little hokey but I continued to read and I’m glad I did. Very satisfying last half!

3.0 out of 5 stars unrealised potential for a great book
Reviewed in Australia on September 29, 2023
Everything interesting about this book is in the first couple of chapters, lots happens after that but nothing really progresses and the “twist” is obvious. Some of the writing and structure is quite good, particularly the pov intros, but the rest is clumsily Chekhovian. I finished it because I enjoyed the wish fulfilment aspects.

I hadn't had any prior notice of this book, I took a punt and was pleased I did. I thought it was an original story, well written and captivating. Great characters. Story touches on themes of menopause, murder and mystery!
