Editorial Reviews

Review

Shawnee Thornton Hardy offers her wisdom and expertise with heart and clarity in this much needed and important resource to support children and teens. This book provides the reader with an accessible and comprehensive guide for assessment and program development strategies informed by yoga philosophy and practices, integrated with neurophysiology and psychology frameworks. -- Marlysa Sullivan DPT, C-IAYT, E-RYT, Author of Understanding Yoga Therapy: Applied Philosophy and Science for Well-being

With tender and compassionate zeal, Shawnee Thornton Hardy embraces the complex needs of our children, those often misunderstood, unseen or held at a distance by our society. Shawnee's approach, caring, curious and creative, lays down a somatic and yogic path, offering responsive, inclusive and accessible practices, a gateway to holistic health and a feeling of belonging and enduring self-respect. Sometimes a book comes along that helps you remember the goodness in humanity - this is it! -- Anne Pitman, MSc., C-IAYT, Clinical Yoga Therapist, Director of the School of Embodied Yoga Therapy, Co-Author of Yoga Therapy Across the Cancer Care Continuum

As a Yoga therapist and parent of two older children with complex needs, I only wish that I had access to Shawnee Thornton Hardy's wise counsel many years ago. Her book, Yoga Therapy for Children and Teens with Complex Needs, isn't just a compilation of tools. It is a beacon of hope for those of us struggling to connect with our children. And best of all, it offers our kids a pathway back home to themselves.
With clear examples, practices, and scientific evidence, Hardy shows us there is a path forward, even when we feel lost and confused. She explains, "The practice of yoga is a practice of coming home to ourselves. The intuitive, curious, joyful and present nature of who we truly are beyond our experiences in life. A coming home to our innate wholeness, wellness and interconnectedness with the world." Thank you Shawnee for shining a light in the dark, and helping us all find our way home.

-- Jivana Heyman C-IAYT, E-RYT500, Founder and Director of the Accessible Yoga Association and Author of 'Accessible Yoga' and 'Yoga Revolution'

Excellent resource for yoga teachers! There is a wealth of knowledge in this book!

I love Shawnee Thornton Hardy's book on Yoga Therapy for Youth. It has provided me with an invaluable guidance.
I has tools not only for yoga teachers and educators but for anyone seeking guidance on how to live a more balanced and healthier life, how to reduce the daily stressors, how to regulate emotions by using various breathing techniques. The book is specifically targeted for youth, but can be applied to adults as well.
Shawnee provides specific guidance for neurodiverse demographics, such as ADHD, autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome, as well as treating trauma.
I highly recommend Shawnee's book and her courses as well.

The training in Greece was wonderful and her new book is the same. Thank you Shawnee 🙏 5 stars

Shawnee Thornton Hardy has written a beautiful book that begins with her vulnerability of her childhood, teens and young adult years in which her lived experience of trauma found her self-medicating to deal with the pain. When you read about her journey in the Preface, one can understand how her experiences guided her to understand self-regulation and learning to be in the body. These insights fuel her passion as well as her many years in working with neurodiverse children and teens both in educational settings and in a yoga therapy context. Shawnee continues to educate herself and understand the complexity of nervous system and vagus nerve function in helping others learn to calm and ground and ultimately find success and joy. There are many tools listed in how to work with a variety of challenges including Down's Syndrome, scolosis, and anxiety and depression. Great pictures and explanations throughout the book. Truly, one can see what a labor of love she has for her topic. Highly recommend.

I pre-ordered this and counted down the days until this book was released and it did not disappoint! Shawnee continues to blow me away with her knowledge and expertise, both in her books and her trainings. This book is a must for your bookshelf although in saying that, it will not be on your shelf much as it is such a valuable resource and reference guide for anyone who works with children or has them in their life and understands how beneficial yoga is for all abilities. Thank you Shawnee for all that you do 🙏

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide for any professional or family looking to help kids be their best.

Had the great fortune of completing levels 1 and 2 yoga training for kids in person with Shawnee. This book was the next step in my journey. As an occupational therapist of 26 years I rate this as one of the best resources to use with the diversity of the population we work with. This book was truly inclusive, very easy to read, filled with clear diagrams, and most of all written from a place of passion. It can easily be followed and was truly holistic in all aspects. Great for families, brand new professionals in their fields as well as those of us that love to keep on learning. I have been applying these into my practice since the course in 2019 and the results have been incredible. Giving the kids we work with tools to excel and be there best selves can be achieved. You won't go wrong thinking outside the box.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on applications of Yoga therapy
Reviewed in Germany on September 20, 2023
I teach Yoga therapy, and I purchased this book on a recommendation of a colleague because I am starting a new program for teens. The author does a great job of succinctly summarizing the field of Yoga therapy and also child development - both summaries are accessible. I find the tables of fundamental concepts really valuable (I have them book marked) for someone like me who is returning to the topic repeatedly.

A great resource for anyone working in the intersection of Yoga and child development.
