Well written with a variety of experiences to read.
5 Stars
Well written with a variety of experiences to read.
I love this read because it is informative and offers a variety of perspective from different people. Most of all, I like the theme of the book. From the start, the book disarmed my expectations so that I could engage each assay on its own merits. I found the book reflective with the thrust of the author’s point highlighted and magnified on each page to be clearly seen and read. This one gets 5 stars.

This is great collection of essays for anyone who wants to be a better ally or thinking about becomng one.

The first one, Dana's Absolutely Perfect Fail-Safe No Mistakes Guaranteed Way To Be An Ally by Dana Alison Levy was the most educational and uncomfortable one for me. The author tells you what to do and what not to do if you want to be an ally. I had committed I wanted to show someone empathy for her problem and I did it the wrong way! It really backfired, the recipient played a practical joke on me that was mean. I would have wanted a simple verbal response pointing out my mistake. But she enlisted two people in the joke and I had to go to restroom to sob. We never talked together again. It was too painful. I made a big mistake and she ratchetted it up. I could avoided the mistake and if I saw her doing that to another person, I would have summoned the guts to call her out.

Another essay stood out to me, Dismantling Judgment by Lizzie Huxley-Jones told her invisible illness and many of the same experiences that I have had and felt like I had found a friend.

Another essay, Lupe, was another favorite. I loved the story about her mother and her mother's childhood playmate. They maintained a strong friendsip and helped each other through out their lives until Lupe's tragic death.

I got book this for my 12yo daughter who is dealing with being the new kid in 6th grade - new school to her but old school for most of her classmates. And, well, middle school is a Bi+!$ some times - especially for girls. I read a few of the stories and they seem to deal with a lot of issues that her generation is having to navigate that mine didn't. I was a 6th grader in 1992 - a very different time. Bullying was on the blacktop not pinging on my phone as a text or social media comment. Racism was around but not acknowledged or talked about as much as it is now & I went to a pretty un-diverse school. Sexuality wasn't talked about as much either. I knew what gay & lesbian meant but it only applied to TV shows and movies - the closet doors were very strong in those days. Now my daughter has to deal with so much that I don't have any experience with and I appreciate the authors compiling this book of examples for us to discuss and for her to have a reference when she sees or experiences the situations in the real world.

Both the Jewish and Christian Bibles stress that we should "Love our fellow as ourselves." Both say this is a basic principle of religion. Unfortunately most people ignore this rule, even supposedly pious people. The Jewish sage of the first century suggested a simple way of implementing the rule: What is harmful to you do not do to others: the rest of the religion is commentary, but go learn it. This book contains the essays of 17 people who address the problem. It contains valuable lessons for young and old.

This is a great group of essays that gives you things to think about. Each essay focuses on the personal experience of the one writing it. They share their story and what they wish would have happened, or what they expected from the people that cared about them. I especially appreciated the opportunity to talk to my students who were reading through some of the essays. This gave us an opportunity to discuss what was said in the essay and if it showed the top of ally that we would want for ourselves and those around us. Some of them disagreed with what was expected and some of them wanted a different approach. At the very least, it gave our club something to wrestle with.

As a mixed-race person, I know how challenging it can be to deal with internal biases you don't even know you have. This book is a collection of first-hand accounts from all kind of people dealing with and sharing stories about their own experiences. These perspectives help you see in new ways - like the black woman living in a predominantly white area that always sat alone on the bus (even when it was standing room only) until the day she didn't.

The stories are short, easy to read, and you can dip in just about anywhere to get a quick reality check. Allyship isn't one thing. It shows up in a variety of ways - even when you think no one is looking. This book does a great job of sharing those varied experiences and perspectives.

This book is approachable and a great introduction about difficult topics most people don't want to discuss or don't fully understand. I like that it covers a variety of topics and makes them more personal through the essays. It is a great starting point for anyone wanting to learn more about how they can be better without making some readers want to put it down completely. This book can encourage readers to do more digging and get into books that are harder for some people to read. It's an easy read and gives great resources at the back of the book including organizations, websites, and more reading about topics addressed in this book. I enjoyed this book overall. It's a good starting point for a lot of people.

This book is full of assorted essays intended to help allies understand how to be of support to marginalized people and communities. Written with kindness, love, and understanding, the diversity of authors really gives a well rounded perspective that is useful and clear. Inspiring and demystifying, this book is a wonderful resource for people who genuinely want to be part of the solution. Highly recommended for middle schoolers through adults!

This book is a collection of essays by authors who write for Young Adult (YA) audiences and it's a fabulous resource for any YA who wants to learn more about the struggles other people go through and how best to be an ally. I wish I'd had something like this growing up, but allyship wasn't even a word then, and I know my well meaning attempts to support friends who were marginalised were often flawed.

Even as an adult, I've learned a lot reading this book and it will help me be more mindful in interactions with people in the future, but also be more confident in using my voice (and privilege as a white middle class middle aged woman) to call out behaviours.

This book is here to help you understand, notice and take action. It is quite a heavy read at times and one to step away from sometimes. this is not a passive read, it's sit down and pay attention and make a difference.

Helpful tips about small ways you as an individual can make a difference and give a voice without those needing the voice ever knowing. It helps you navigate being bolder and more disruptive to support those marginalized individuals and communities.

It's an eye-opener on what you might get wrong and already have and how to apologise.

It is a book to read and well worth the effort!

This book has claimed that it is for everyone, and is a collection of personal essay written by 17 Young Adult authors. The book overall explores the experiences about real things that happened to real people.
I had found that it is thought provoking and educate you to be aware of the situation and finding new ways even after you have screwed up.
I feel like this book has written to give you a guide through the stories and made me feel that I am not alone. I especially like the last section of the book, which list all resources to carry on those important conversations. There's also some suggested helpful word swaps such as instead of saying Are you deaf? say Are you listening? , Instead of you are so OCD , say you are well organised.

All in all a great read, I was a little confused before if it was aimed at young adults only, but it can be for everyone, as it was good to read through the different experiences.

A great collection of short real-life anecdotes and tips from a number of minorities (racial, disable, LGBTQ, ...) and those trying to support them. Definitely worth a read, especially for teenagers and their parents.
