Open Wound (The Requiem Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

3.0 3.0 out of 5 stars 2 ratings

Continued from Everything Is Wonderful Now...

After the angel that threatened his life, Sean faced his frightening alter, Vexis, who haunted his dreams. With the help of Byleth, Zagan, and Darokin, he thinks his troubles are finally behind him. Little does he know that PTSD is a beast lying dormant in waiting to emerge. It ends up influencing everything, including the way he perceives reality.

Vexis was the reason Sean remained in a trauma loop for so long, but something changes within them as they decide to finally work with him; they want to help him heal from trauma after years of prolonging it. Being a sadist who is unable to feel love, it results in a twisted and sexual masochistic relationship that Sean becomes addicted to.

As Vexis takes Sean through various liminal space voids and dark memories — theirs included — they reveal that they are something much more frightening and ancient than an angel or a demon.

Can Vexis really be trusted? Or are they opening Sean's wounds to let something sinister slip inside...

Shane is a disabled nonbinary author of dark queer fiction. They have been writing since they were seven years old, and they haven’t stopped since.

Writing quickly became a way to escape from reality while dealing with early trauma, and it has helped them understand and cope with several mental illnesses they were diagnosed with throughout life. They’ve since used their writing to help raise awareness for misunderstood and stigmatized mental illnesses, but they also enjoy writing stories that make people think differently about societal norms we’re often raised with, such as gender, sexuality, and spirituality. They want to spread the message that it’s okay to be different.

Shane lives in Ohio with their two cat sons. They’ve previously published speculative fiction novels.

Top reviews from the United States

What I Didn’t Like:
-I read this as a review request without reading book 1. This is something I do all the time as the kind of reader who can fill in gaps and get immersed in a world. This was an attempt to see if this book can stand alone or needs the first one to provide context. If you like to know what’s going on instead of assuming things, you’ll need the first one. I had to make a lot of assumptions right up front that may or may not have been right. This won’t affect my review.
-The entire set up of the book feels uncomfortably dark. The author does a good job of fading to black for some moments, but it still feels dark. Use this as a content warning if you must (there is an actual content warning on the opening pages though).
-The plot elements feel like an afterthought. The characters are explored, the concept is developed, but the plot isn’t a focus and it shows. It’s difficult to pin down what this book is actually about.

What I Did Like:
+The idea of exploring your dark desires in order to overcome anxieties or trauma was interesting. The idea of using (imaginary friends? Other parts of yourself? Actual angels and demons?) to do so was even more interesting.
+The explorations in the void were well written. It attaches an imagery to the psychological work being done in a way that works.

Who Should Read This One:
-If the vibe you’re after is a dark book about monsters within reflecting the darkness of a psyche, this may be your book.

My Rating: 2 Stars
I wanted more plot than vibes so, for me, this one was problematic.

Spoiler Free:
The harsh sequel to Everything is Wonderful Now had my heart aching from the first chapter. This is a tough read, but only for how open and raw it is. Almost never do I read stories that delve so deeply into the emotional fragility of its main character, but Open Wound made me confront pain and its peculiar relationship with pleasure very well. With a cast of twisted, unforgettable creations, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a story about surviving trauma, and the often unpredictable roads that can take. Its a story that takes a strong, unflinching look at self-worth and image, and deserves praise for its honest portrayal of mental health.
