My Hair Story: An Inspirational Children’s Picture Book That Empowers Black Girls to Love and Embrace Their Unique Beauty Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

Looking for an inspirational book that teaches Black girls to love themselves just the way they are? If yes, then this mom-and teacher-approved book is for you!

Children are more acute nowadays. They see and hear and experience everything our culture has to offer, which sadly tends to point to what separates us rather than what unites us. In this way, hair that is different or lacking—in texture, length, fullness, shape, color, and so on—may threaten a child's self-esteem and sense of belonging.
My Hair Story takes you on a journey with five-year-old Abigail, who is learning daily to embrace her short, curly head of hair. With the love and support she receives from her mother, Abigail comes to appreciate her "look" as her mother creates styles that not only enhance her outer beauty but build her self-confidence within.

In
My Hair Story, Abigail learns how to love herself more and more each day. She discovers that the beauty and magic of her special hair come not from its length or texture but in the love and care she gives herself. Abigail's story encourages Black girls to be proud of who they are—on the inside and the outside.

This book promotes meaningful conversations, laying a strong foundation for important topics such as:

    • Self-confidence, self-acceptance, and self-love
    • Embracing our uniqueness
    • Affirming ourselves daily
    • Celebrating the differences and similarities in ourselves

In addition, this book will help girls

      • strengthen the bond with their parents,
      • establish a healthy body image from a young age,
      • know their worth and values, and
      • identify what true beauty is.

Bonus Activity: This book includes a set of powerful affirmations for each day of the week that young children can say out loud with their parents or teachers to reinforce their self-esteem and self-confidence.

This book is perfect for Black girls of all ages.

I'm just really happy books like these exist! I've seen a lot of GROWN women of color deal with hair insecurity issues their entire lives due to the negative connotations historically associated with black hair. This well illustrated book can be used as an affirmation for our young girls! Love it!Kudos to the author for being the change you want to see!Blessings.

This book is reminds me of when I was raising my 3 beautiful girls. I had many questions along each of their hair journeys—as did they. I am happy there is a book that discusses the issue of black hair care. I wish it was around for my girls. But now it is and I am so excited that’s it is now so new mother’s can reciprocate

Danielle does an excellent job at helping young black girls embrace their natural beauty. In my opinion, she also does a great job at helping girls with long hair see what their friends with short hair might go through. Help us embrace and love our unique selves!
      Great job, Danielle!

This is perfect for every little girl! The sequence of events are very realistic and relatable. The affirmations in the back of the book are great reminders for our little princesses to start affirming in themselves.
