"Author Bair has serious finance credentials. She is a former chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and current chair of Fannie Mae―and, now, an author of whimsical personal finance books for young children."―Booklist

An inexperienced royal learns a valuable lesson about reading the fine print.

Princess Persephone was cold in her castle on freezing Ganymede. So, when Aluminum Jim came calling to sell her tin sheets to nail onto the exterior walls to keep out the cold, Persephone was only too happy to agree to a loan and sign the contract without reading it. What could she do when the tin sheets didn't work, she couldn't repay the loan, and Jim claimed the castle?

Editorial Reviews

Review

Bair is marching against financial illiteracy with baby steps. Literally. Despite her long career in the most sophisticated levels of fiscal management, since 2006, she's been explaining dollars and cents to Americans who are still getting coins from the Tooth Fairy. Her Money Tales picture books tackle all kinds of economic issues for readers in grade school.
Her first, "Rock, Brock, and the Savings Shock," is about twin boys who disagree about how to handle their weekly allowances. Other books in the series address predatory lending, compound interest and more — all in fun, rhyming stories about animals and princesses.

Once named by Time Magazine as “the little guy’s protector in chief,” Ms. Bair is a passionate advocate for strong consumer protections in financial services and educating the public on financial basics, starting at an early age. She is the author of Albert Whitman’s Money Tales picture book series, which includes Rock, Brock and the Savings Shock (2006), Isabel’s Car Wash (2008). Princess Persephone Loses the Castle (2021), Billy the Borrowing Blue-Footed Booby (2021) Shark Scam (2022) and Princess Persephone’s Dragon Ride Stand (2022). She also authored a book about the financial crisis for young adults, Bullies of Wall Street (Simon & Schuster, 2015). She has received awards from the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP), the Council on Economic Education (CEE), the JumpStart Coalition, and Institute for Financial Literacy for her educational writings.

Ms. Bair has had a long and distinguished career in government, academia, and finance. She is perhaps best known as Chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) from 2006 to 2011, when she steered the agency through the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. For her leadership of the FDIC, she received the JFK Library’s Profiles in Courage Award and was twice named by Forbes Magazine as the second most powerful woman in the world. A former finance professor and college president, Ms. Bair has been nationally recognized for her innovative initiatives to make college more accessible and affordable. She is a frequent commentator and op-ed contributor on financial regulation and the student debt crisis, as well as author of Bull by the Horns (Simon & Schuster, 2012) her memoir of the financial crisis, which made the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post bestseller lists.

She is a trustee of Economists for Peace and Security, a group composed of some of the world’s most renowned economists and public servants dedicated to peace and world prosperity; a founding director of the Volcker Alliance, established by Former Federal Reserve Board Chair Paul Volcker to build trust in government, and the founding chair of the Systemic Risk Council, which monitors and advocates for reforms to promote financial stability. As a nation, we do a woefully inadequate job of instilling financial literacy skills in children and young adults. Sheila Bair has set out to remedy this with her delightfully written and illustrated series, Money Tales. Her most recent installment in the series, Princess Persephone Losses the Castle, teaches children (and hopefully parents who read to them) about the dangers of predatory mortgage lending. The opportunity to buy and maintain a home is among the most accessible means of building family/generational wealth. Too often, unscrupulous lenders rob families of their American Dream. Sheila Bair is doing her part to educate children and their parents so that they do not fall victim to such practices.

Another great installment in Sheila Bair's Money Tales series, this one follows Princess Persephone of Ganymede as she battles a loan shark and ends up getting her ice castle repossessed! (Don't worry, she gets it back.) Aimed at kids ages 5 and up, the book also contains valuable lessons for adults about avoiding scams. Complete with a friendly orange dragon (like Shakespeare's fools, usually the wisest character around), this book is proof that you're never too young to start learning about managing your money - and it can be fun

The book subject matter is very important-reading contracts and avoiding scams.

However, the princess gets a lawyer and she just magically makes everything right.

Confronting the thief or going to the police would’ve been a way more useful lesson.
There’s no such thing as magic.

With lots of families doing home improvement projects this past year, this delightful book offers a timely cautionary tale in a fun and engaging way. At our house, we recently completed several home improvement projects so the kids really related to Princess Persephone's predicament, and especially liked learning that there is help if you get in over your head.

The illustrations are as good as the story.

Oh, my! This book is hysterical. Although illustrated (beautifully) and told in rhyme, the story is actually intended for somewhat older kids. Who knew a dire tale about mortgages, predatory loans, and the need to read contracts could be such fun? Share it with your favorite little money managers!

Our daughter is learning how to read, do math, and count money in kindergarten. What else is a better way to reinforce those habits AND start to develop financial literacy. It's a nightly read before bed. Excellent book and author.

I bought this book for my grandchildren. It’s a fun way to educate children about the need to look before you leap, especially if you might lose your castle!
