- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2024I don't normally leave reviews and almost never for books. But this one is special! 'Witch King's Oath' is full of fantasy-genre staples: King's, rival kingdoms, witches and magic. What sets the story apart for me is the grounded world in which it all take place. It is woven together by different nations - each with their own detailed tradions, beliefs, and cultures. Kingdoms join houses through marriage for political and diplomatic reasons. Magic is feared, outlawed even, with those who bear the curse of it often burnt at the stake in an attempt to rid the land of its danger.
Populating this believable world are characters who feel relatable and real. And they face real problems, struggling with or against the norms placed on them by a harsh, often unjust, society. They question themselves, their roles, and their identity. Indeed, one of the major struggles of the main character is one of identity and self - Who am I? Who am I pretending to be? And what that struggle reveals drives the story forward.
The characters fight and face past trauma as well. Finding solidarity in unlikely places. Relationships that would feel stale or over-done in other stories feel more alive and more complex here. People connecting because of, and in spite of, their flaws.
It's been a while since I've enjoyed a new story this much and I encourage others to give it try! You won't be disappointed!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2023This story captivates with its originality. The author's mastery of sophisticated language and impeccable world-building skills shines through every page. The intricately constructed world of Ammar allows you to feel immersed in this fantasy land.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the narrative is the skillful exploration of gender identity. With sensitivity and depth, the story delves into the experiences of individuals who feel trapped in their own bodies. The author handles this complex topic with finesse, offering readers a thought-provoking and engaging perspective.
The relationship between Anryn and Beatrice is a wonderful and inspiring aspect of the story. Despite the challenges they faced to be together, their connection is effortless, and Beatrice's unwavering support for Anryn is truly inspiring. Their relationship showcases the transformative power of love and support.
Furthermore, this story serves as a shining example of the immense talent and dedication found among indie authors. AJ, the author, demonstrates not only her literary prowess but also her genuine passion for storytelling. As a reader, I was touched by her warmth and sincerity that was apparent in every chapter.
I wholeheartedly wish AJ the utmost success in her future endeavors. With her exceptional storytelling abilities, I have no doubt that she will continue to make a significant impact in the literary world.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2023"Witch King's Oath" by AJ Glasser deserves nothing less than a resounding five-star rating for its exceptional storytelling and imaginative world-building.
In this thrilling tale, readers are initially introduced to a narrative that may seem perplexing due to the author's unique storytelling style. However, I encourage readers to persist, as the story's secrets gradually unfurl, revealing a rich and intricate plot that rewards patience with a deeply engaging experience.
What truly sets this book apart is its remarkable characters. They are intense, flawlessly flawed, and beautifully broken, making them feel incredibly authentic and relatable. In a genre often filled with one-dimensional heroes and villains, the author's characters stand out as genuine and multifaceted individuals. Their internal struggles and external challenges add layers of depth to their relationships and actions, elevating the story to a whole new level.
The world-building in "Witch King's Oath" is breathtaking and rich. The inclusion of magic, witches, and intricate medieval religions is masterfully executed. Each element is meticulously crafted, bringing the story's universe to life with vivid detail. Glasser's unique interpretation of these classic fantasy tropes injects fresh energy and originality into the genre.
I'd also like to extend my commendation to the author for crafting a compelling allegory within "Witch King's Oath" that addresses the experiences of individuals grappling with gender identity, offering a poignant reflection on the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. The narrative's portrayal of witch burnings serves as a potent parallel to the contemporary persecution faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, effectively highlighting the ongoing struggle for acceptance and understanding within our current political climate.
In summary, "Witch King's Oath" is a literary gem that may require a bit of patience at the outset but swiftly evolves into an engrossing and thought-provoking masterpiece. The complexity of its characters, the richness of its world, and its ability to challenge preconceived notions make it a definitive five-star read. AJ Glasser's narrative skill is evident, leaving readers eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this extraordinary series.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2023AJ Glasser needs a reality check and to realize that insulting and alienating future readers is, in fact, not a way to get honest and constructive reviews. She wants reviews, so here ya go.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2023This is a very unique story, it reads as very intelligent language and grammar usage. I think the conversation revolving around gender in the story is very well done and interesting, something I believe everyone should hear about. The world and character building was done very well it didn’t leave any unanswered questions and everything was very well explained. As a side note, I was an Arc Reader for this book and this author was an absolute sweetheart as well, all the love to indie authors and I wish you all the best!
